Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arlington County, Virginia's oldest African American community, the Nauck community, which dates back to 1844, is rich in history and abundant with bridge builders, both past and present, who have made local and national contributions while fighting for their right to experience a good quality of life. Bridge Builders of Nauck/Green Valley: Past and Present is a compilation of the stories, interviews, and biographies of these extraordinary African Americans who pursued and found success, despite the laws at the time that limited their access to everything from home loans to education. The perseverance of the pioneers of Nauck is alive through their accomplishments, triumphs, and achievements. Whether in their own words, the words of their loved ones, or through history books, Taylor's labor of love seeks to memorialize the important work these African Americans have achieved and the legacy they leave for future generations. Said Taylor, "Ordinary Nauck/Green Valley residents surviving Jim Crow Laws, lacking financial backing, becoming economically independent, educating themselves and their children, fighting for freedom, and remembering from whence they came should be an inspiration to all to celebrate and continue sharing future, ordinary resident's accomplishments." About the Author Dr. Alfred O. Taylor Jr. was born and raised in Arlington County, Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Technical Teacher Training, a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision of Adult Education, and a Doctorate of Education from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Administration of Higher Education. Taylor served as Assistant Dean for the College of Professional Studies (and was later named Acting Dean). Taylor retired from the University of the District of Columbia after thirty-one years of service. Taylor is still active in his community and religious community, serving as President of the Nauck Civic Association and as Chairman of the Deacon's Ministry at the Macedonia Baptist Church, among many others. Taylor and his wife, Delores, a retired D.C. Public Schools teacher, have two children, three grandsons, and two great-granddaughters. He hopes that Nauck/Green Valley: Past and Present will become a living document that will be continuously supplemented as future generations of "Nauckians" make their contributions to society.
Book Synopsis Yorktown by : Kathleen Manley and Richard Shisler
Download or read book Yorktown written by Kathleen Manley and Richard Shisler and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1750, the deepwater port of Yorktown housed approximately 250-300 businesses, with as many as 2,000 people thriving in the small town. By 1781, the Revolutionary War's final siege had been staged, and the British were caught without resources to win the final battle against the American and Allied forces. Freedom was won for America, but Yorktown would continue to see war. In 1862, the Peninsula Campaign of the Civil War led to a monthlong battle near the site of the previous conflict. In 1917, World War I brought the embarkation of the Atlantic Fleet, and within a few decades, World War II would change Yorktown and the nation forever. These historic postcards portray the first family houses, the churches, the courthouses, the military, the battlefields, and the commemorative memorials of the area, showing the town's progression through time, from the 18th century through the present day.

Book excerpt: The true story of the valiant men who gave their all to save the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown—and changed the course of the Pacific War. On June 4, 1942—six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor—Yorktown’s crew began the carrier’s final battle against Japan’s infamous aircrafts. Hotshot fighter pilot Lieutenant Scott McCuskey attacked from the air in his Wildcat, becoming the Navy’s second-ever “ace in a day.” Carpenter Boyd McKenzie worked tirelessly to repair Yorktown before a fresh air strike. Critically injured gun crew member George Weise fought for his life as the ship threatened to capsize. Meanwhile, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Warren Heller raced to save the lives of bloodied gunners and sailors by evacuating them before time ran out. The stories of these heroes and many other brave servicemen bring the gripping narrative of Yorktown’s final thirty days to life, as she fights in the near back-to-back Battles of Coral Sea and Midway. Through unpublished memoirs and interviews with Yorktown’s last surviving veterans, acclaimed author Stephen L. Moore offers up a new and compelling amount of a pivotal month in World War II while honoring the courage of those who served.
