Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many Southern states, South Carolina is a vivid mosaic of urban centers and pastoral landscapes, a unique blend of New South advances and agrarian traditions. It is within the Palmetto State's countrysides that many of its leaders in education, industry, and politics emerged, marked by an enduring pride of home and its importance and relevance in the shaping of the state's history and future.York County is representative of the Carolina experience and its dual identity, with its "big city" opportunities along its eastern boundaries and its rustic, austere charm lingering in its western sections. This volume explores the county's bucolic setting from the centrally located county seat of York to its western border along the Broad River and traces the history of the county from an era dominated by early American Indian tribes, to the arrival of the first Scotch-Irish settlers, across three centuries of struggle and progress, to the present. York and Western York County: The Story of a Southern Eden brings to life, through word and image, the personalities and events that shaped York and its western rural paradise, including the small towns of Sharon, Hickory Grove, Smyrna, McConnells, and Bullock's Creek.
Book Synopsis Faces of the Civil War by : Ronald S Coddington
Download or read book Faces of the Civil War written by Ronald S Coddington and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archival images and biographical sketches of Union soldiers tell the stories of their lives during and after the Civil War. Before leaving to fight in the Civil War, many Union and Confederate soldiers posed for a carte de visite, or visiting card, to give to their families, friends, or sweethearts. Invented in 1854 by a French photographer, the carte de visite was a small photographic print roughly the size of a modern trading card. The format arrived in America on the eve of the Civil War, fueling intense demand for the keepsakes. Many cards of Civil War soldiers survive today, but the experiences?and often the names?of the individuals portrayed have been lost to time. A passionate collector of Civil War–era photography, Ron Coddington researched the history behind these anonymous faces in military records, pension files, and other public and personal documents. In Faces of the Civil War, Coddington presents 77 cartes de visite of Union soldiers from his collection and tells the stories of their lives during and after the war. These soldiers came from all walks of life. All were volunteers. Their personal stories reveal a tremendous diversity in their experience of war: many served with distinction, some were captured, some never saw combat while others saw little else. The lives of survivors were even more disparate. While some made successful transitions back to civilian life, others suffered permanent physical and mental disabilities, which too often wrecked their families and careers. In compelling words and haunting pictures, Faces of the Civil War offers a unique perspective on the most dramatic and wrenching period in American history.

Book excerpt: "Pride in past achievements has been a guiding beacon to Yorkers in forging the community's future," writes Georg Sheets in York County To the Setting of the Sun: An Illustrated History. Those achievements now stretch to more than 300 years, encompassing important roles in the American Revolution and all subsequent wars; a diversified business community that has provided steady prosperity, capable of with-standing financial panics and depressions; and an extraordinary number of distinguished craftsmen, inventors, industrialists, artisans, and artists who have made contributions not only to York County, but to America as a whole and to the world. The skillfull Susquehannocks and other native Americans used the lush woodlands of York County, nestled in the Susquehanna Valley, for centuries as a hunting ground. They formed the first roads and some put down villages here. In 1736 an Indian treaty would change the course of history, however, deeding to William Penn and his followers "the river Susquehanna, and all the lands lying on the west side of said river to the setting of the sun."
