Book Synopsis The Heart of Yonkers by : Patricia Vaccarino
Download or read book The Heart of Yonkers written by Patricia Vaccarino and published by Modus Operandi Books. This book was released on 2020-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the edge of the Hudson River, we travel with fifteen year old Cookie Colangelo into The Heart of Yonkers. Close to the river's edge, it was hot enough to take your clothes off and think about jumping into the water. Cookie has been slow to mature sexually. When her sexual awakening does occur, it's a huge explosion, all-consuming and emotionally powerful. She desperately wants a boyfriend but will not settle for a dumb Yonkers guy. Then she meets Stanley di Falco and falls hard. This Vietnam War Vet has recently returned home. Stanley is vulnerable and trying to come to terms with his own humanity. While Cookie does everything in her power to seduce him, her age is an obstacle to consummating the relationship. Throughout this story, the presence of the river is a brilliant metaphor providing context for unforgettable characters. Meet Jimmy the Midget who owns the Midget Bar on top of hardscrabble Nodine Hill. This popular watering hole is a refuge for working stiffs to drown themselves in the drink and to get solace from a midget who possesses uncanny insight into people. As a ruse to get close to Stanley di Falco, Cookie befriends his mother Bertha Sokól, who is a refugee and survivor of the slaughter at Nowy Targ in Poland. Many characters from the first Yonkers book are back too. They're older but are they wiser? Black B-boy dancer Herman Lynch and his grandmother Mable Kerry continue to be the ballast in Cookie's unstable world. Cookie's parents are stranger and funnier than ever. The Queen Bee of Italian girls Toni Ferlinghetti embarks on a new reign of terror. Ultimately, The Heart of Yonkers is about kissing...well, learning how to kiss, or maybe, it's about much more than kissing.
Book Synopsis Yonkers in the Twentieth Century by : Marilyn E. Weigold
Download or read book Yonkers in the Twentieth Century written by Marilyn E. Weigold and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the economic, political, and social evolution of New York States fourth largest city during the twentieth century. Yonkers in the Twentieth Century chronicles the decline and rebirth of the fourth largest city in New York State, once known as the Queen City of the Hudson and the City of Gracious Living. Previously an industrial powerhouse, the citys factories turned out essential items that helped the United States win two world wars. Following World War II, the industrial base of Yonkers eroded as companies moved away, contributing to an increase in poverty. To address the housing needs of its low-income residents, Yonkers built public housing, resulting in a nearly thirty-year court case that, for the first time in United States history, linked school and housing segregation. The case was finally settled in the early years of the twenty-first century, a time that also witnessed the continuation of the citys economic redevelopment efforts along the Hudson River and contiguous downtown area. Striving to once again become the Queen City of the Hudson, Yonkers is being rebuilt beginning at its historic waterfront. Yonkers in the Twentieth Century provides readers an in-depth perspective of our city that has not yet been told. From the glory days at the dawn of the twentieth century to its later turbulent decades, Marilyn E. Weigold thoughtfully takes us through the vibrant history of our city, affording us the knowledge needed to appreciate our past so to best plan for our future. I encourage those who have an insatiable interest and pride in Yonkers to explore Weigolds comprehensive narrative and take a step back in time. Mike Spano, Mayor of the City of Yonkers Yonkers has such an interesting and vibrant history that it needs to be preserved and told. This book is a major accomplishment providing a comprehensive look at the life of the city and will leave a lasting legacy for residents, historians, and all those who appreciate and value knowing how we got to where we are today. James J. Landy, Chairman, Hudson Valley Bank

Book Synopsis The Death of a Library by : Patricia Vaccarino
Download or read book The Death of a Library written by Patricia Vaccarino and published by Modus Operandi Books. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yonkers Carnegie Library was commonly held to be the most beautiful building in the city. No one seemed to know for sure why it was destroyed. The circumstances that led to the death of the library are steeped in half-truths, incredible lies, and wild rumors that range from political corruption to bumbling incompetence. One rumor focuses on the true intentions of the Mayor of the time, Angelo Martinelli, and his desire to undo the white flight to the east side of Yonkers. Rumors hinting of racism-the area surrounding the library had become increasingly populated with blacks and Puerto Ricans-is also explored as a reason why the library was destroyed. Corruption in Yonkers city government has also been alleged, and while without having a smoking gun, it's hard to prove people took money under the table, the chronic pattern of cronyism is undeniable. Among the rumor mill, claims persist that Angelo Martinelli wanted to build a sleek high-rise tower to replace both the Yonkers City Hall and the library. Other rumors suggest the library was razed to make room for a bridge to New Jersey. Another allegation accuses Yonkers City Council Member Harry Oxman of sacrificing the library to spare his small-time dry cleaning business. And finally, the library itself has been accused of being its own worst enemy. What really happened?

Download or read book Women Like Us written by Erica Abeel and published by Houghton Mifflin. This book was released on 1994 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Women Like Us traces the lives of four women from their undergraduate days at Sarah Lawrence College in the late 1950s through the colorful and varied histories of their boyfriends, jobs, husbands, children, divorces, friendships, rivalries, failures, and successes to the present. It is a novel brimming with the lives of a group of women caught between two generations: too restless for the pieties of the fifties, too early for the revolution of the sixties." "In rejecting Ben for the beautiful but feckless Gerrit, Daisy establishes a pattern of "all for love" that, despite her talent and intelligence, will haunt her life. Gina, the class square, focuses on her career rather than love. Franca's marriage collapses under the weight of children and her husband's experimentation with open marriage. Delphine, the leader of the clique, astonishes all by marrying before her graduation." "Women Like Us captures the lives of a generation of women who at thirty were overtaken by the feminist revolution, when all the rules changed, and who have been running to catch up ever since. In the tradition of Marilyn French, Erica Jong, Judith Rossner, and Gail Godwin, Erica Abeel has written an unforgettable story; in it, every woman is sure to recognize something of her own life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
