Book excerpt: Songs from the Well: A Memoir of Love is the remarkable chronicle of award-winning poet and author Adam Byrn Tritt's love for his wife, Lee; his sudden and heartbreaking loss of her to brain cancer; and his struggle to find a way back to life, as told through essays and poetry written during their marriage and in the time since her passing. Tritt's hope is that his experiences will help people who are grappling with a loved one's serious illness or loss, and will give their friends and families insight so they may better and more fully understand grief and loss. "So gorgeous, this book! Such beautiful medicine for the human heart. We have lost touch with our ability to grieve well, culturally. We have lost the songs and stories, the ceremonies and rituals. In having the courage to share his own experience of the fullness of grief, Adam Byrn Tritt is helping us to remember, to return to this aspect of our humanity, and to restore these qualities which render it more fully precious and sacred." --Murshida VA, M.Ed., Ed.S., Harvard-trained healer, Sufi teacher, mystic poet, and musician "Grief must be a terribly difficult subject to write about, but the author bravely rises to the occasion. At once heartbreaking and yet life-affirming, this book is a masterpiece of its kind." --Wayne McNeill, author, Songbook for Haunted Boys and Girls

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Whatever 'the Jewish experience' might mean to the modern reader, Adam Byrn Tritt's approach is uniquely his own. He is 'observant' in the sense that he carefully observes, as you would expect of a man who is, at essence, a poet. As a self-described 'Jewitarian Buddhaversalist, ' he is aware that each tradition illuminates the other. This collection of essays and poems provides us with good talk. Conversation is the highest artform, and Mr. Tritt invites us in most kindly, with insight, erudition, humor, and compassion." --Wayne McNeill, author of Songbook for Haunted Boys and Girls Yom Kippur as Manifest in an Approaching Dorsal Fin explores--in essays, poems, and creative nonfiction--the tension between cultural heritage and contemporary society, between religion and spirituality, between the family you inherit and the family you create. From early-morning wrestlings with God to portraits of three remarkably different family funerals, from Kabbalist chants at a pagan bookstore to the humorous "What Do Jews Do on Christmas?," Tritt's writing taps into themes nearly universal in today's world in ways that will resonate with readers of all backgrounds and faiths--or no faith at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phoenix and the Dragon: Poems of the Alchemical Transformation is the latest collection from award-winning poet, humorist, activist, and educator Adam Byrn Tritt, and it may be his most personal and compelling work yet. Tritt's previous books include Tellstones: Runic Divination in the Welsh Tradition, and the Gainesville Community Haggada. He also has several credits as a screenwriter and a playwright. While Tritt's poetry and essays have been published in numerous magazines and anthologies, The Phoenix and the Dragon is his first collection with a cohesive theme: transformation. "Alchemy," says Tritt, "is the art of transformation. It's about taking something of little intrinsic worth and changing it into something of tremendous value--changing lead into gold, for example. When you write poetry, you take experiences common to all people--small, everyday occurrances--and you distill them into their essence." Tritt, who won both the 2006 EPPIE Award for Poetry in an Anthology and the Book Club of South Florida Poetry Prize and is listed in Who's Who in U.S. Writers, Editors, and Poets, has also been a social worker and a middle school teacher. He is equally at home speaking in lecture halls, giving public readings in bookstores, and visiting elementary school classrooms, where he can be found surrounded by children begging him to read his story Bud the Spud just one more time. In 1995 he was an awarded an honorary doctorate for his work in Religious Tolerance and for the creation of TurningPoint, a program providing alternative healthcare for low-income individuals.

Book excerpt: An updated edition that sheds new light on one of the most dramatic reversals of military fortune in modern history. The easing of Israeli military censorship after four decades has enabled Abraham Rabinovich to offer fresh insights into this fiercest of Israel-Arab conflicts. A surprise Arab attack on two fronts on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, with Israel’s reserves un-mobilized, triggered apocalyptic visions in Israel, euphoria in the Arab world, and fraught debates on both sides. Rabinovich, who covered the war for The Jerusalem Post, draws on extensive interviews and primary source material to shape his enthralling narrative. We learn of two Egyptian nationals, working separately for the Mossad, who supplied Israel with key information that helped change the course of the war; of Defense Minister Moshe Dayan’s proposal for a nuclear “demonstration” to warn off the Arabs; and of Chief of Staff David Elazar’s conclusion on the fifth day of battle that Israel could not win. Newly available transcripts enable us to follow the decision-making process in real time from the prime minister’s office to commanders studying maps in the field. After almost overrunning the Golan Heights, the Syrian attack is broken in desperate battles. And as Israel regains its psychological balance, General Ariel Sharon leads a nighttime counterattack across the Suez Canal through a narrow hole in the Egyptian line -- the turning point of the war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evocative in the purest meaning of the word--romantic in the truest sense--Songbook for Haunted Boys and Girls leaves the constraints of the traditional narrative form behind and presents sketches in time and space, moments of life frozen for our senses, snapshots that are not only visual but engage all our senses. This is haiku in prose, and prose at its best. Wayne McNeill's latest book will leave you feeling, with each word, as if you too are living life on The Danforth, sharing wine and song with those who populate this vibrant neighborhood. Some samples: One of the advantages to living above a bakery is the smell of baking bread on summer mornings. Surely there are few more life-affirming fragrances offered in this world. Many a time I've sat out on the fire escape in housecoat and slippers to breathe in such rarefied air. It's an ancient comfort and one that should by no means be undervalued. Taramousalata versus black olive spread is the only serious philosophical question. * * * * * Look how the streetlights brighten my living room after dark. A few hours before dawn you will note the all-night buses passing by with their cargo of fallen angels. And if you're up and about around six or seven you'll find the boys and girls filling the sidewalk fruit and vegetable stands. This is a village unto itself. Throwaway umbrellas are sold for a dollar each outside the subway station.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 8 maps and more than 20 illustrations Armies appear to learn more from defeat than victory. In this regard, armed forces that win quickly, decisively, and with relative ease face a unique challenge in attempting to learn from victory. The Israel Defense Forces certainly fell into this category after their dramatic victory over the combined armies of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria in the Six Day War of June 1967. This study analyzes the problems that beset Israel in the aftermath of its decisive victory in the Six Day War over the Arabs. In the 1973 War, Anwar Sadat, Egypt’s president, was able to exploit Israeli vulnerabilities to achieve political success through a limited war. An important lesson emerges from this conflict. A weaker adversary can match his strengths against the weaknesses of a superior foe in a conventional conflict to attain strategic success. Such a strategic triumph for the weaker adversary can occur despite serious difficulties in operational and tactical performance. The author suggests a striking parallel between the military triumphs of Israel in 1967 and the United States in 1991. In both cases, success led to high expectations. The public and the armed forces came to expect a quick and decisive victory with few casualties. In this environment, a politically astute opponent can exploit military vulnerabilities to his strategic advantage. Sadat offers a compelling example of how this can be done.
