Book excerpt: In a groundbreaking randomized study conducted among nursing students, the profound impact of yoga on their overall well-being, stress levels, and academic performance was meticulously examined. The research, designed to assess the potential benefits of integrating yoga into the demanding curriculum of nursing education, sought to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of yoga as a holistic approach to supporting the mental and physical health of future healthcare professionals. The study, conducted over a period of six months, involved a diverse group of nursing students randomly assigned to either a yoga intervention group or a control group that did not participate in any structured yoga activities. The yoga intervention comprised regular sessions incorporating a blend of physical postures, breath control exercises, and mindfulness techniques. The control group, on the other hand, continued with their standard academic routine without any additional interventions. Throughout the study, participants' stress levels were assessed using standardized measures, and academic performance was tracked through grades and self-reported data. The results unveiled a compelling narrative of the positive influence of yoga on nursing students. Those engaged in the yoga intervention reported a significant reduction in stress levels compared to their counterparts in the control group. The practice of yoga not only served as a physical outlet but also emerged as a potent tool for cultivating mindfulness and resilience in the face of the rigorous demands of nursing education. Furthermore, the impact of yoga on academic performance was a notable revelation. Students who participated in regular yoga sessions exhibited improved concentration, heightened cognitive abilities, and a greater capacity to manage the multifaceted challenges inherent in their academic pursuits. The integration of yoga into the curriculum thus emerged as a potential strategy to enhance the overall educational experience for nursing students. Beyond the quantitative data, qualitative findings from the study provided rich insights into the subjective experiences of nursing students practicing yoga. Participants reported a heightened sense of self-awareness, improved emotional regulation, and a greater ability to cope with the emotional demands of their future profession. The cultivation of a mind-body connection through yoga was identified as a valuable asset in fostering not only personal well-being but also a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between mental and physical health-an essential perspective for healthcare professionals.

Book excerpt: Nursing students experience a considerable amount of stress to meet their professional demands both academic and clinical requirements. However, yoga is an effective practice to reduce stress and improve psychological and physical well-being. AIM To evaluate the effectiveness of an 8-week yoga intervention on psycho-physical functioning of nursing students. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a randomized wait-list control trial. We recruited 100 students from Kempegowda Institute of Nursing, Bangalore, and randomized them into two groups (yoga=50 and wait-list control=50 students). The following instruments were used to collect the data, Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI), Self-Compassion Scale- short form (SCS-SF), Connor- Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Jefferson Scale of Empathy HPS-Version (JSE-HPS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Sit and Reach Test, Peak Flow Meter, Handgrip Dynamometer, Pinch Gauge, and Purdue Pegboard. Data was analyzed using Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (RM-ANOVA) followed by post-hoc Bonferroni correction for all the variables. CONCLUSION Overall, the present study has demonstrated mixed results. Though we could not elucidate significant improvements in all the variables, an increase in mindfulness, self-compassion, low back, and hamstring flexibility, and pinch strength is worth noting. This improvement in psycho-physical functioning aid nursing students to meet the demands of the profession. Hence, yoga intervention can be recommended in nursing education.

A lack of stress reduction tools in the nursing curriculum leaves these students at risk for stress related outcomes. In the past, research has addressed the effects of stress on health care providers, but little has been specific to nursing students. The rising popularity of yoga is an opportunity to offer such a tool to address stress in nursing students. Using YouTube as an avenue to provide yoga classes designed for stress reduction in nursing students is accessible for most of this population. This study was conducted to explore the hypothesis of using YouTube yoga videos to address stress reduction before and after participating over a two-week period. A review of related literature was examined and Tsai’s theory was the theoretical framework applied to the stress nursing students experience as they take on the new role of caregiver. A descriptive design was used to compare data collected.

Book excerpt: Fully updated and revised, the second edition of Integrative Nursing is a complete roadmap to integrative patient care, providing a guide to whole person/whole systems assessment and clinical interventions for individuals, families, and communities. Treatment strategies described in this version employ the full complement of evidence-informed methodologies in a tailored, person-centered approach to care. This text explores concepts, skills, and theoretical frameworks that can be used by healthcare leaders interested in creating and implementing an integrative model of care within institutions and systems, featuring exemplar nurse-led initiatives that have transformed healthcare systems. This volume covers the foundations of the field; the most effective ways to optimize wellbeing; principles of symptom management for many common disorders like sleep, anxiety, pain, and cognitive impairment; the application of integrative nursing techniques in a variety of clinical settings and among a diverse patient population; and integrative practices around the world and how it impacts planetary health. The academic rigor of the text is balanced by practical and relevant content that can be readily implemented into practice for both established professionals as well as students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate nursing programs. Integrative medicine is defined as healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) as well as all aspects of lifestyle; it emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. Series editor Andrew Weil, MD, is Professor and Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Weil's program was the first such academic program in the U.S., and its stated goal is "to combine the best ideas and practices of conventional and alternative medicine into cost effective treatments without embracing alternative practices uncritically."

Book excerpt: "Purpose: Nursing students are prone to stress-related diseases, such as depression and anxiety, which are associated with chronically elevated cortisol levels due to the excessive firing of the Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) axis. This study assessed three speeds of yoga and how they acutely affected salivary cortisol levels within female nursing students. Methods: Students participated in three yoga sessions cadenced at different speeds in a non-randomized order: (i) standard-speed yoga (SSY), (ii) high-speed yoga (HSY), and (iii) slow-speed yoga (SLSY). Each class integrated sequencing concepts from the brahmana/langhana strategy (BLS) and the Para Yoga Blueprint (PYB). Cortisol samples were collected at four time-points: (i) pre-asana (PREA), (ii) immediately post-asana (POA), (iii) immediately post-savasana/pranayama/dhyana (POSPD), and (iv) 15 min post-session (15-PO) during all three yoga sessions. Results: ReANOVA showed no significant differences in cortisol within the main effect of yoga speeds (p = 0.094) or between the yoga speed x time-points interaction (p = 0.231). The main effect across the four time-points were significantly different from each other (p

Book excerpt: The well-being or "Quality of Life" of a population is an important concern in economics and political science. It is measured by many social and economic factors. A large part is the standard of living, the amount of money and access to goods and services that a person has; these numbers are fairly easily measured. Others like freedom, happiness, art, environmental health, and innovation are far harder to measure. This has created an inevitable imbalance as programs and policies are created to fit the easily available economic measures ignoring the others that are very difficult to assess. Debate on "Quality of Life" is millennia-old, with Aristotle (384 - 322 BC) giving it much thought in his 'Nicomachean Ethics' and eventually settling on the notion of eudaimonia, a Greek term often translated as happiness, as central. The neologism liveability (or livability), from the adjective liv(e)able, is an abstract noun now often applied to the built environment or a town or city, meaning its contribution to the "Quality of Life" of inhabitants. She is recipient of the American Psychological Association Distinguished Young Scientist Award and has had a Research Scientist Award from the NIH for her research career. She is the author of Infancy, The Amazing Infant, Children A to Z, Adolescents A to Z, Heartbreak, Advances in Touch, Touch Therapy, Massage Therapy Research, and Complementary and Alternative Therapies, the editor of a series of volumes on High-Risk Infants, and on Stress & Coping, and the author of over 450 journal papers. This book is a review of recent literature on yoga research. First, the review covers the physiological effects of yoga on heartrate and blood pressure followed by the physical effects on balance and flexibility, muscle strength, weight loss and sexual function. Psychological problems that are affected by yoga are then summarized including anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression, as well as physical conditions including pain syndromes, cardiovascular, autoimmune and immune conditions. Finally, separate sections are devoted to yoga effects on pregnancy, children and adolescents and the aging. Potential underlying mechanisms are proposed including the stimulation of pressure receptors leading to enhanced vagal activity and reduced cortisol. The reduction in that stress hormone may, in turn, contribute to several positive effects including enhanced immune function and lower prematurity rates.
