Book excerpt: Yiddish Language Structures presents ten new studies on structural aspects of Yiddish in the light of modern linguistic theories which are of interest to linguists and philologists. The contributions are examples of data-based research. They address several levels of the language system including morphology, syntax and lexicology, and put special emphasis on mechanisms of internal and contact-induced language change spanning different epochs and societal and textual strata.

A monumental, definitive work, History of the Yiddish Language demonstrates the integrity of Yiddish as a language, its evolution from other languages, its unique properties, and its versatility and range in both spoken and written form. Originally published in 1973 in Yiddish by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and partially translated in 1980, it is now being published in full in English for the first time. In addition to his text, Weinreich's copious references and footnotes are also included in this two-volume set.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: sehr gut, University of Freiburg, language: English, abstract: Origins: Yiddish is the historic language of Asheknazic (Central and East European) Jews, and is the third principal literary language in Jewish history, after classical Hebrew and (Jewish) Aramaic. The language is characterized by a synthesis of Germanic (the major component, derived from medieval German city dialects, themselves recombined) with Hebrew and Aramaic. Scholars tend to locate the origins of Yiddish in the Rhineland, where a handwritten prayer book from 1272 was found in the city of Worms containing the earliest known written Yiddish sentence. 2 Yiddish has a particular tradition: it took root and flowered in the ghettos (from Venetian gheto, a foundry on a small island where in XVI Jews were confined3), starting in walled juderías in Spain in the thirteenth century (according to the Lateran Councils of 1179 and 1215 it was forbidden to Jews to live close to Christians and in 1555 Paul IV ordered segregated quarters for Jews in the Papal States).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Atlas of Language Structures is a book and CD combination displaying the structural properties of the world's languages. 142 world maps and numerous regional maps - all in colour - display the geographical distribution of features of pronunciation and grammar, such as number of vowels, tone systems, gender, plurals, tense, word order, and body part terminology. Each world map shows an average of 400 languages and is accompanied by a fully referenced description ofthe structural feature in question. The CD provides an interactive electronic version of the database which allows the reader to zoom in on or customize the maps, to display bibliographical sources, and to establish correlations between features. The book and the CD together provide an indispensable source of information for linguists and others seeking to understand human languages. The Atlas will be especially valuable for linguistic typologists, grammatical theorists, historical and comparative linguists, and for those studying a region such as Africa, Southeast Asia, North America, Australia, and Europe. It will also interest anthropologists and geographers. More than fifty authors from many different countries have collaborated to produce a work that sets new standards in comparative linguistics. No institution involved in language research can afford to bewithout it.

He examines children's books, board games, summer camps, klezmer music, cultural festivals, language clubs, Web sites, cartoons, and collectibles - all touchstones of the meaning of Yiddish as it enters its second millennium. Rather than mourn the language's demise, Adventures in Yiddishland calls for taking an expansive approach to the possibilities for the future of Yiddish. Shandler's conceptualization of postvernacularity sheds important new light on contemporary Jewish culture generally and offers insights into theorizing the relation between language and culture."--BOOK JACKET.

The Second Oxford Winter Symposium on Yiddish Language and Literature reflects this trend and this collection of papers from the conference explores a wide range of contemporary research in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics of Yiddish means different things to different people. For some it refers to the various social and political forces that shaped the status and the functional diversification of the language. For others it may be analyzed within the context of personal or even collective love and hate of one’s mother-tongue vis-à-vis the politically “mightier” and “culturally more prestigious” languages. After the Second World War, the post-Holocaust realities forced a complete reconceptualization of Yiddishism as both an ideology and a state of mind. Yet, despite or perhaps because of numerous heated debates for and against Yiddish, and the unabating personal wars within the “Yiddishist” camp itself, the subject of Politics of Yiddish is bound to fascinate many modern historians, sociolinguists, and literary scholars. In the present volume it serves as a general theme for studies devoted to internal and external politics of Yiddish language, literature, ethnography, and scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a careful selection of fifteen articles presented at the SPCL meetings in Atlanta, Boston and Hawai'i in 2003 and 2004. The contributions reflect - from various perspectives and using different types of data - on the interplay between structure and variation in contact languages, both synchronically and diachronically. The contributors consider a wide range of languages, including Surinamese creoles, Chinook Jargon, Yiddish, AAVE, Haitian Creole, Afro-Hispanic and Afro-Portuguese varieties, Nigerian Pidgin, Sri Lankan Malay, Papiamentu, and Bahamian Creole English (Hackert). A need to question and test existing claims regarding pidginization/creolization is evident in all contributions, and the authors provide analyses for a variety of grammatical structures: VO-ordering and affixation, agglutination, negation, TMAs, plural marking, the copula, and serial verb constructions. The volume provides ample evidence for the observation that pidgin/creole studies is today a mature subfield of linguistics which is making important contributions to general linguistic theory.
