Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palm Trees and Fruits Residues: Recent Advances for Integrated and Sustainable Management places the wastes of palm trees and fruit residues in the international context of sustainable development, providing sustainable applications that are detailed based on sector to help readers from specific fields identify applications. Furthermore, successful processing case studies using valorization are presented. As the expansion of palm tree fruit crops processing industries (manufacture of syrup, honey, non-alcoholic beverages, flours, confectionery products, fruit paste, etc.) is generating growing quantities of wastes in different forms, this book covers sustainable aspects. Written by an international team of contributors, this title is aimed at professionals and enterprises who aspire to develop real, high-scale industrial applications for palm tree and fruit residue valorization. - Includes palm tree wastes and fruit processing by-products, their quantification and classification - Brings identification, quantification and characterization of palm-tree and fruit wastes - Thoroughly explores biotechnological, agricultural, environmental and energy applications of fruit processing by-products - Contains case studies of a palm tree fruit processing by-products valorization

Book Synopsis Etiology and Integrated Management of Economically Important Fungal Diseases of Ornamental Palms by : Imran Ul Haq
Download or read book Etiology and Integrated Management of Economically Important Fungal Diseases of Ornamental Palms written by Imran Ul Haq and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palms are monocots, Angiosperms, belonging to the family Palmae (Arecaceae), perennials having woody stems. Palmae (Arecaceae) family comprised of about six subfamilies, 200 genera and 2,700 species that are distributed all over the tropical, subtropical and Mediterranean landscape. Palms are diverse (ecologically and morphologically) group of plants. Ornamental palms are important component of landscape as well as interiorscapes. Additionally, these plants are good source of food, feed and shelter with numerous other commercial benefits. Likewise other trees and crops, landscape and field nurseries of palms are also subjected to various threats of insect pest and diseases (caused by different plant pathogens). Amongst fungal diseases leaf spots, leaf blights, Fusarium wilts, butt rots, bud rots, root rots, lethal yellowing and decline of palms are major growth constraints of palm growth. In developing countries very little attention has been paid on the etiology and management of these fungal diseases on ornamental palms. Accurate diagnosis and reliable management plan of palm fungal diseases usually requires expertise in both modern and advanced plant pathological approaches. Historically it was general belief that plant pathogens are not associated with human diseases. Since 19th century, several clinical reports are available indicating many plant pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp., Alternaria spp., Trichoderma spp., Fusarium spp., Curvularia spp. and Colletotrichum Spp) as novel agents of human diseases. Besides the association of fungal plant pathogens infecting ornamental palms, harbouring any of earlier mentioned or other fungal species (capable of causing certain diseases in human beings or pets) by the ornamental palms cultivation (either grown indoor or outdoor) is an important area of research to be explored and addressed thoroughly. This book will provide the deep information regarding major fungal diseases of ornamental palms, their symptoms, disease identification, and etiology and management strategies. This book will also provide unique knowledge regarding the ornamental palms harbouring kinds of human fungal pathogens and their practical management at domestic and commercial scale, in order to make cultivation of these plant more beneficial for humans, animals and environment.
Book Synopsis Current Advances in Coconut Biotechnology by : C. Oropeza
Download or read book Current Advances in Coconut Biotechnology written by C. Oropeza and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coconut palm occupies a significant place in the world economy as an important subsistence crop in all the areas in which it is grown. Relatively few countries are able to export any quantity of coconut products because of increasing home demands coupled with low productivity. Yields are generally well below potential despite recent developments with improved planting stock and agronomic practices. In the last 50 years, both these aspects have received considerable attention, but the focus is shifting to investigate how the use of recently developed biotechnological techniques- can benefit the coconut industry. This volume, the result of the International Symposium on Coconut Biotechnology (held in December 1997 in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico), describes recent research in three important areas. Standard plant breeding techniques used with coconut have produced improved planting material, but progress is inevitably very slow. Can more rapid genetic improvement be obtained using molecular techniques? The papers presented in this section suggest that such techniques will open up exciting new prospects, but only after basic information has been gathered on the genetic status of existing coconut stocks. Research using microsatellite techniques seems to provide a useful tool to help to classifying these stocks. However, only a combination of classical breeding methods with modem techniques will lead to the rapid improvement which is required to supply material for urgent replanting programs.

Download or read book The Journals written by John Fowles and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-12 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Fowles gained international recognition in 1963 with his first published novel, The Collector, but his labor on what may be his greatest literary undertaking, his journals, commenced over a decade earlier. Fowles, whose works include The Maggot, The French Lieutenant's Woman, and The Ebony Tower, is among the most inventive and influential English novelists of the twentieth century. The first volume begins in 1949 with Fowles' final year at Oxford. It reveals his intellectual maturation, chronicling his experiences as a university lecturer in France and as a schoolteacher on the Greek island of Spetsai. Simultaneously candid and eloquent, Fowles' journals also expose the deep connection between his personal and scholarly lives as Fowles struggled to win literary acclaim. From his affair with Elizabeth, the married woman who would become his first wife, to his passion for film, ornithology, travel, and book collecting, the journals present a portrait of a man eager to experience life. The second and final volume opens in 1966, as Fowles, already an international success, navigates his newfound fame and wealth. With absolute honesty, his journals map his inner turmoil over his growing celebrity and his hesitance to take on the role of a public figure. Fowles recounts his move from London to a secluded house on England's Dorset coast, where discontented with society's voracious materialism he led an increasingly isolated life. Great works in their own right, Fowles' journals elucidate the private thoughts that gave rise to some of the greatest writing of our time.
