In form and arrangement we have followed time-honored custom, in the belief that in so doing we more deeply root the quiet dignity of tradition. In ac cord with the spirit of the day, as well as under stern compulsion of necessity, we have reduced the size of the work. Due to thrifty planning and studied compactness, we believe that The Cincinnatian of 1918 contains its portion of those frank joys and youthful sor rows which we are able to grasp from the fleet ing path of time - and, having grasped them, to render'their impress for the coming years. Download or read book The Best Short Stories of 1918 written by Edward J. O'Brien and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Best Short Stories of 1918: And the Yearbook of the American Short Story To repeat what I have said in these pages in previous years, for the benefit of the reader as yet unacquainted with my standards and principles Of selection, I shall point out that I have set myself the task of disengaging the essential human qualities in our contemporary fiction which, when chronicled conscientiously by our literary artists, may fairly be called a criticism of life. I am not at all interested in formulae, and organized criticism at its best would be nothing more than dead criticism, as all dogmatic interpretation of life is always dead. What has interested me, to the exclusion Of other things, is the fresh living current which flows through the best Of our work, and the psychological and imaginative reality which our writers have conferred upon it. NO substance is of importance in fiction, unless it is organic substance, that is to say, substance in which the pulse Of life is beating. Inorganic fiction has been our curse in the past, and bids fair to remain so, unless we exercise much greater artistic discrimination than we display at present. The present record covers the period from January to October inclusive, 1918. During the past ten months I have sought to select from the stories published in American magazines those which have rendered life imaginatively in organic substance and artistic form. Substance is something achieved by the artist in every act Of creation, rather than something already present, and accordingly a fact or group of facts in a story only attain substantial embodiment when the artist's power of compelling imaginative persuasion transforms them into a living truth. The first test of a short story, therefore, in any qualitative analysis is to report upon how vitally compelling the writer makes his selected facts or inci dents. This test may be conveniently called the test of substance. But a second test is necessary if the story is to take rank above other stories. The true artist will seek to shape this living substance into the most beautiful and satisfying form, by skilful selection and arrangement Of his material, and by the most direct and appealing presentation Of it in portrayal and characterization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bryn Mawr College Yearbook, 1920 The comi-tragedy of The Light That Failed, produced under the auspices of 1918, is an interesting study of inheritance and an excellent example of the old time moral ity play;' the only immoral element, Dr. Potter, we shall leave for a red class to criticize. It would have been easier for the critic if the author had omitted the fourth act, which is really little more than an epilogue, the only justification for which is the publicity given to the rather charming old English May Day scene. This book was released on 2016-07-17 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Annual for the Year of Our Lord, 1918 The greatest immediate call before us as a church is, I believe, in the For ward Movement. It is comprehensive enough to treat all phases of our needs and definite enough to make possible a program of work. It is' of such magni tude that no half-hearted effort will ever be able to insure its success. It must be made the big thing of our purpose for the' years to come. Every member should feel a just share of responsibility for its success. If every member of the Christian Church will align himself with this Movement, it will succeed. The coming year will make exorbitant demands and impose herculean tasks upon all Christians. The state of the world and its future uncertainty permits no easy-going religion. The call of the day is for the strongest, in faith, heart, and body. The hour of the great sacrifice is upon us. The Master came to a period when, though he saved others, Himself he could not save. In the face of the demands of our country, a world and Christ's Kingdom, let us enter into a new covenant with Him to go with Him all the way.
