Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Congregational Yearbook, 1879: Issued Under the Sanction of the National Council of the Congregational Churches of the United States, by Its Publishing Committee, and Containing the General Statistics of Those Churches for the Last Year As those statistics had for some time been published by private enterprise in the Congregational Quarterly, - for whose prosperity none but the warmest de sires were by any person expressed, conference was sought with its editor and proprietor, in the hope of effecting some arrangement by which the Council might assume its own proper function without conflict with his interests. As the result, in the impression that a generous course would best suit the feelings and judg ment of all concerned, the committee, a year ago, made proposals which, after some additional stipulations by the owner of the Quarterly, were accepted. The committee consented to the prior appearance in the Quarterly for January, 1878, of the statistics which it prepared and authorized, and also paid the proprietor in money and in the free use of its type, which cost it, and saved him, money a sum amounting to three fourths of the entire capital invested by him in his journal, at the estimate he then appeared to put upon it. The committee did all this (as they understood it), expressly reserving to the Council. In View of the con sideration paid and the arrangement made, the right at any future time to publish a year-book, should such a course seem to be expedient, without further consider ation of the relation of the Quarterly to the subject. The owner of the Quarterly expressed to the committee and others his entire content with this as a liberal arrangement. The committee (which includes the two original proprietors and editors of the Quarterly) also believed that the January statistics had always been an expensive encumbrance to its pages; and that, were its owner to remit their publication to a year-book, and devote the space - with the large amount of money - thus saved, to matter of a more pop ular quality and a more miscellaneous value, he might reasonably hope to enlarge materially its circulation, and make it pecuniarily profitable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A firsthand account of the private world of a harem in colonial Cairo—by a groundbreaking Egyptian feminist who helped liberate countless women. In this compelling memoir, Shaarawi recalls her childhood and early adult life in the seclusion of an upper-class Egyptian household, including her marriage at age thirteen. Her subsequent separation from her husband gave her time for an extended formal education, as well as an unexpected taste of independence. Shaarawi’s feminist activism grew, along with her involvement in Egypt’s nationalist struggle, culminating in 1923 when she publicly removed her veil in a Cairo railroad station, a daring act of defiance. In this fascinating account of a true original feminist, readers are offered a glimpse into a world rarely seen by westerners, and insight into a woman who would not be kept as property or a second-class citizen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until 1879, the Roaring Fork Valley was home to a band of Colorado Ute Indians. All of that changed in the summer and fall of that year, when two prospecting teams came to the valley to stake their claims, some of which went on to produce millions of dollars of silver. Within five years, Aspen was home to over 20,000 individuals including miners, lawyers, families, businessmen, and even prostitutes. Aspen's fortune was tied to silver. More importantly, its fate was ultimately tied to the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890, which required the US government to buy 4.5 million ounces of silver per month. From 1890 to 1893, the Sherman Act kept Aspen alive and growing. With the repeal of the act, Aspen began a slow, painful decline. This book covers the years of Aspen's discovery, through the years of decline, and into what is known as the "Quiet Years."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Robert Warburton (1842-99) was a British army officer who served for 18 years as the political officer, or warden, of the Khyber Pass, the most important of the mountain passes connecting Afghanistan and present-day Pakistan. He was born in Afghanistan, the son of a British officer and his wife, a noble Afghan woman who was the niece of Amir Dost Mohammad Khan. Warburton was educated in England, commissioned an officer, and served at posts in British India and in Abyssinia (present-day Ethiopia) before being appointed, in 1879, to his post in the Khyber. Home to the fiercely independent Pushtun Afridi people who resisted external control, the pass frequently had been blocked by the Afridis or by fighting among the hill tribes. Warburton is credited with keeping the frontier peaceful and the pass open, mainly though diplomacy rather than force. He drew upon his Afghan background and his fluent Persian and Pushto to gradually win the trust of tribesmen whose traditions made them deeply suspicious of outsiders. In August 1897, one month after Warburton's retirement, unrest broke out among the Afridis, who seized the pass and held it for several months. Warburton was called back into service and participated in the Tirah expedition of 1897-98, in which Anglo-Indian forces reopened the pass. Warburton was especially proud of the role played in the expedition by the Khyber Rifles, a paramilitary force recruited from Afridi tribesmen that he had raised and commanded. Eighteen Years in the Khyber, 1879-1898 is Warburton's account of his education and career. It touches upon virtually every individual and event that played a role in relations between Afghanistan and British India during the last quarter of the 19th century. Long in poor health, Warburton returned to England and died before the book was completed. Posthumously published, it is illustrated with a number of striking photographs and includes a detailed fold-out map of the Khyber.
