We were all moved south to Danville, Virginia. This was not a safe place to keep us, as we were too near General Grant and his army. After a stop of about ten days, we were sent by railroad to Augusta, Georgia. We were kept in the cars about twenty-four hours. It was said the citizens would not allow us to stay there for fear the Yanks would contaminate the air. We were sent on to Macon, Georgia. Here we were quartered in the State Fair Grounds. There were two old buildings on the grounds in which they put the wounded, sick and the older officers. I was placed in one corner of the larger building, on account of my wound, and I also had a bad case of diarrhoea. Soon after I was laid down a very pleasant rebel sergeant came by and I called to him. He asked me what he could do for me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Hundred Days in a Yankee Prison: Reminiscenses of War Life, Captivity, Imprisonment at Camp Chase, Ohio Very much has been written and much more embodied in the partial reports and exparte investigations of the so-called "Horrors of Andersonville" and the "inhuman treatment" of the prisoners of the Federal armies by the prison officials, and the agents of the Confederate State's War Department. These publications have emanated from the press of Northern publishers and have been inspired by a spirit of enmity which is evidently partisan and extremely vindictive. Doubtless, much that has been thus detailed of the privations and sufferings of the prisoners captured by our Confederate armies and sent for security to prison camps, is true. From the very nature of the imprisonment, prison life, at best, is one of privation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I had hiked with heavy packs in France, but this hike excelled for length any twenty kilometer hike, or so it seemed. As we were passing through Alsace, there were many French people in every doorway, and when they learned that the prisoners were Americans, the women and girls wept bitterly, for they well knew what fate was in store for those who had the ill luck to be captives among the Huns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative study proves the existence of a de facto Confederate policy of giving no quarter to captured black combatants during the Civil War—killing them instead of treating them as prisoners of war. Rather than looking at the massacres as a series of discrete and random events, this work examines each as part of a ruthless but standard practice. Author George S. Burkhardt details a fascinating case that the Confederates followed a consistent pattern of murder against the black soldiers who served in Northern armies after Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. He shows subsequent retaliation by black soldiers and further escalation by the Confederates, including the execution of some captured white Federal soldiers, those proscribed as cavalry raiders, foragers, or house-burners, and even some captured in traditional battles. Further disproving the notion of Confederates as victims who were merely trying to defend their homes, Burkhardt explores the motivations behind the soldiers’ actions and shows the Confederates’ rage at the sight of former slaves—still considered property, not men—fighting them as equals on the battlefield. Burkhardt’s narrative approach recovers important dimensions of the war that until now have not been fully explored by historians, effectively describing the systemic pattern that pushed the conflict toward a black flag, take-no-prisoners struggle.

It was only a small bonfire; but it spread, spread wider and wider, and waxed brighter and brighter, until it illuminated the whole North, and showed three millions Of freemen their true inter ests, and made them say at the polls, Thus far shall slavery come, and no farther; and here shall its dark waves he stayed. It took place during the Civil War, when more than 1,200 Yankee officers were jammed into Libby, a special prison considered escape-proof, in the Confederate capitol of Richmond, Virginia. A small group of men, obsessed with escape, mapped out an elaborate plan and one cold and clear night, 109 men dug their way to freedom. Freezing, starving, clad in rags, they still had to travel 50 miles to Yankee lines and safety. They were pursued by all the white people in the area, but every Black person they encountered was their friend. In every instance, slaves risked their lives to help these Yankees, and their journey was aided by a female-led Union spy network. Since all the escapees were officers, they all could read and write well. Over 50 of them would publish riveting accounts of their adventures. This is the first book to weave together these contemporary accounts into a true-to-life narrative. Much like a Ken Burns documentary, this book uses the actual words the prisoners recorded more than 150 years ago, as found in their many diaries and journals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War Soldier and the Press examines how the press powerfully shaped the nation’s understanding and memory of the common soldier, setting the stage for today’s continuing debates about the Civil War and its legacy. The history of the Civil War is typically one of military strategies, famous generals, and bloody battles, but to Americans of the era, the most important story of the war was the fate of the soldier. In this edited collection, new research in journalism history and archival images provide an interdisciplinary study of citizenship, representation, race and ethnicity, gender, disability, death, and national identity. Together, these chapters follow the story of Civil War soldiers, from enlistment through battle and beyond, as they were represented in hometown and national newspapers of the time. In discussing the same pages that were read by soldiers’ families, friends, and loved ones during America’s greatest conflict, the book provides a window into the experience of historical readers as they grappled with the meaning and cost of patriotism and shared sacrifice. Both scholarly and approachable, this book is an enriching resource for undergraduate and graduate courses in Civil War history, American history, journalism, and mass communication history.
