Johnston Jr. recounts the famous tales that have given the Northeast such a storied maritime tradition. From the stern Puritan fathers to Francisco Ruiz, New England s last known pirate, Johnston canvasses the accounts of the men and women who fished, fought, explored and marauded in sailing craft over the region s fickle yet fertile waters. With occasional forays into the nautical history of the Chesapeake and trans-Atlantic realms, The Yankee Fleet offers a colourful and offbeat exploration of Yankee sailors and the world they made."

Book excerpt: To trace the course of the Yankee from Gloucester harbor around the world is to re-draft in no small degree a map of strange and remote parts of the globe. Among her ports of call was Floreana in the Galapagos, then the home of the tragic Baroness and her companions. Then 3000 miles of open sea brought the Yankee to tiny Pitcairn, famous from the saga of the Bounty. And in succession Tahiti, Cook Islands, the Fiji and Solomon Islands, the New Hebrides, North Borneo, and the China Sea. Followed the far East, Siam, Singapore, the East Indies and South Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, and finally, after eighteen months across the Atlantic to reach again her home port in Gloucester. On this voyage Captain Johnson and his interesting ship's company made many inland explorations among strange lands and native peoples. New islands were charted and places visited hitherto unknown to white men's experiences. Their discovery of one of the highest waterfalls in the world, which they promptly named "Yankee Falls," is an unusual tale among modern seafaring chronicles. They day by day story of the Yankee's voyage and the uncommon experiences of her people is written in the good deep sea tradition--a simple terse style and great economy of expression. All in all the reader will find here a grand tale of the sea.

A sailor is proverbially superstitious, and he clings jealously to tradition. It is told that when the frigate Chesapeake was launched she stuck fast on the ways, and did not reach the water until the following day, which was Friday. Although she was a fine vessel to look at, she grounded upon the bar upon her first attempt to sail, and, when once free, behaved herself in such a lubberly fashion that those who witnessed her starting out declared she was bewitched. Even after many changes had been made in the length of her masts, in the weight of spars, and the cut of sails, still she was considered by many a failure. And, although her sailing qualities improved as time went on, yet her bad name stuck to her, as bad names will. Given this drawback, the unlucky captain of such a craft finds it difficult to recruit a proper crew, and must often be content with green hands, or the riffraff disdained by other ships' masters.

Book excerpt: Did you know the phrase "Mind your Ps and Qs" derives from the custom of keeping tabs on the "pints and quarts" sailors drank in waterfront taverns? Or that the term "Yankee" derives from "yanker", a Dutch word for "wrangler" that was often applied to argumentative American sea captains? Or that the mild British expletive "bloody" is a corruption of the pious oath "By Our Lady", once common among British sailors? The drawings of Cedric Windas, dating from the mid 1930s to the late 1940s, illustrate the origins of hundreds of words and phrases that have made their way from naval jargon into everyday language, as well as those that haven't but have interesting origins, nonetheless. Also illustrated are beginnings of the many traditions that are commonly associated with naval life, including tattooing, the design of uniforms and the use of hammocks aboard ship, among many others.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yankee Ships and Yankee Sailors: Tales of 1812 The incidents made use of in the following pages are historical, or at least authentic some may perhaps come under the head of tradition. Tradi tion is historical rumor; it may be proved by inves tigation to be actual fact, or it may be accepted at its face value, on account of its probability. To inves tigate, one is led to break open and dissect and some times we destroy a wealth of sentiment in the pro ceeding; by casting aside tradition that is harmless we destroy the color of history; we may lose its side lights and shadows that give vividness and beauty to the whole effect. It has not been a spirit of research into the science of history, or a chance for deep delving into figures and records, that has animated the author, although he has drawn upon state papers for material, and all correspondence and important references can be vouched for. He has endeavored to refreshen the colors by removing the dust that may have settled. He has touched the fragile bric - a-brac of tradition with the feather cluster of investigation. There is suflicient excuse for everything that is written in this book. Facts are not lacking to prove much here to be true. It will not confuse our historical knowledge to accept it thus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea Power is more than naval ships and men and weapons, more than naval strategy, more than the ability to engage and defeat an enemy at sea. Sea Power encompasses every strength con-tributed to a nation's defense, economy, self-image, and position in the world community through its use of the oceans. Sea Power is measured by the health of a na-tion's navy and merchant marine; the vitality of its fishing and shipbuilding enterprises; the adequacy and efficiency of its ports and docks. It is reckoned by the ability to husband and harvest the living and non-living resources of the waters and the ocean floor. It is found in maritime recreational activity that invigorates both people and industry. It benefits from the inspiration that stimulates man's imagination to an ever more creative relationship with the sea. This book assesses these components of sea power from the historical perspective of the Yankee Mari-ner, to provide a view of the total impact United States sea power has had in the past and should have in the future. It further considers how understand-ing and stewardship of the oceans can contribute to solutions for the problems of America and the dilem-mas of mankind. The words are those of specialists in ocean science and engineering...sea transport and the building of ships and ports...ocean politics and law...deep-sea mining and underwater oil production...fishery biology and management, and aqua culture... naval history, naval strategy, and defense policy at sea. Drawing upon a vast store of experience and exper-tise, these fifteen authors find Uncle Sam faltering as a Yankee Mariner. They investigate the extent of hu-man commitment and the nature of scientific and technical support needed for the United States to regain its momentum in use of the sea. What they report is a broad-based guide to America's past and present sea power stance, and to the requirements for her future challenge of ocean space.
