The book also serves as a useful guide to global leaders who benefit from understanding the perspective that President Xi brings to international conversation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's development has entered a new phase since the era of Mao and Deng Xiaoping. Its GDP has grown to more than 10 trillion US dollars, twice that of Japan's and close to that of the United States; and Chinese diplomacy has taken on a more active profile as the nation moves towards superpower status on the world stage. At the same time, all of this has resulted in serious ecological problems, and as the economy develops social contradictions are growing more prominent within the country. Xi Jinping, who became General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in 2012, has developed a new philosophy of governance to confront these challenges. The result is a 30-year plan that is the roadmap to The China Dream, which has led to various programs such as the ongoing campaigns to address and eliminate corruption within the CCP and reform of the Military; Market reforms and the "Belt and Road Initiatives" meant to improve domestic infrastructure and broaden Chinese economic influence on the world stage; and the evolution of a new approach to foreign relations. In addition to an analysis by leading Chinese thinkers of the elements of this plan and its implementation, an overview of Xi's early career and the first two years of his leadership provide readers a look at his thinking and how it has developed and provides a preview of what we might expect from China in the Xi Jinping Era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After three decades of reform and opening up, China is closing its doors, clamping down on Western influence in the economy, media, and civil society. At the same time, President Xi Jinping has positioned himself as a champion of globalization, projecting Chinese power abroad and seeking toreshape the global order. Herein lies the paradox of modern China - the rise of a more insular, yet more ambitious China that will have a profound impact on both the country's domestic politics and its international relations. In The Third Revolution, eminent China scholar Elizabeth Economy provides an incisive look at the world's most populous country. Inheriting a China burdened with slowing economic growth, rampant corruption, choking pollution, and a failing social welfare system, President Xi has reversed course, rejecting the liberalizing reforms of his predecessors. At home, the Chinese leadership has reasserted the role of the state into society and enhanced Party and state control. Beyond its borders, Beijing has recast itself as a great power and has maneuvered itself to be an arbiter - not just aplayer - on the world stage. Through an exploration of Xi Jinping's efforts to address top policy priorities - fighting corruption, controlling the internet, reforming state-owned enterprises, improving the country's innovation capacity, reducing the country's air pollution, and elevating itspresence on the global stage - Economy identifies the tensions, shortcomings, and successes of Xi's first five years in office. Xi's ambition, she argues, provides new opportunities for the United States and the rest of the world to encourage greater Chinese contribution to global public goods butalso necessitates a more proactive and coordinated effort to counter the rapidly expanding influence of an illiberal power within a liberal world order. This is essential reading for anyone interested in both China under Xi and how America and the world should deal with this vast nation in thecoming years.

Book excerpt: This is a deconstruction of a selection drawn from the collected works of Xi Jinping from 2012 to 2017 specifically dealing with Xi Jinping's discourse of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for the New Era. For Xi Jinping New Era is the historical epoch in which China has to attain its Two Centenary Goals of becoming a moderately prosperous society by 2022 and attaining the rejuvenation of China, the Chinese Dream by 2049. This process is impacted by specific, grave, difficult and some intractable problems which must be mitigated in order to attain the Two Centenary Goals. From 2012 to 2017 Xi Jinping reveals in great detail his discourse, worldview and plan of action to mitigate these problems and attain the Two Centenary Goals. Xi Jinping insists that a new model of development and governance is demanded to attain especially the Chinese Dream, which amounts to building a new China markedly different from the two development models that preceded the New Era. The departure point of Xi Jinping's model is the new governance rooted in the hegemony of law over the social order including the Party. Xi Jinping has then an order of power that underpins this new development and governance model that is a departure from those of the two preceding models. The vision of Xi Jinping's discourse of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for the New Era is a signal to all nations seeking to end underdevelopment and neo-colonial domination. Compulsory reading for all of us seeking liberation from domination, exploitation and underdevelopment in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: The most important private activity for Xi Jinping, Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party, is reading. To him literature is vital for an individual's growth, particularly works of traditional Chinese culture and the philosophy of Confucius, with its focus on society, self-education, and governance. Having used the knowledge gained from his reading to achieve leadership of China, he encourages everyone around him to love and read good books. Xi believes that reading and learning are not only necessary requirements for good leadership, but for a healthy society generally. Accordingly, he has made reading the classics of Confucius and other thinkers a requirement for Party Leaders. In this collection respected journalist Zhang Fenzhi brings together Xi's speeches, presentations, and writings about the importance of classical Chinese thought and the importance of literature and reading. In China, Xi explains, a major part of the cultural heritage is a "fine tradition of books consisting of ancient and modern masterpieces that are a reflection and expression of the fundamentals of human survival and development. This literary heritage," he explains, "penetrates the wisdom of history. Its ideological value spans time and space being constantly refreshed, and in doing so has become all of mankind's spiritual wealth. The best example of this is that we have a history of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and the works that have come out of it contain a wealth of ideas about how to live the best life as well as the major principles of governance." Readers will find this book is divided between general themes (National Governance, Self-Cultivation, Foreign Affairs, etc.) and with a classic quotation on the theme, Xi's use of the quote, an explanation of his meaning in its use, as well as the work from which the original quote came, the original text, and a short biography of the author. Finally, Zhang provides an analysis of the use of the quote in the context of its historical meaning providing an explanation of Xi's use and meaning. Authors quoted range from Confucius to Mencius to Mao.

Book excerpt: Li Zhi, a thinker in the Ming Dynasty of China, said: "Take other people's topics to express one's own thoughts." This book uses the topic of "Leading the World" to express the thoughts of the Chinese nation and the people of the world: plague, hunger, kidnapping, killing, nuclear threat, nuclear proliferation, environmental degradation, arms race, racial antagonism, continuous wars, fragmented homes, scattered families, and the polarization of the rich and the poor, the hostility among countries and people... The blue planet is torn by power while noble spirit has fallen into selfishness. The crisis of mankind's survival is becoming more and more serious, and the world's doomsday seems to be not far away. Introspect and redeem! Socrates, Jewish prophets, Lao Tzu, Confucius, Shakyamuni, as well as the cross of Jesus and Muhammad's "Quran": how should human beings bear the weight of this history! This book profoundly proves that capitalism and socialism are not absolute opposition, but the same in opposition: live together and coexist. Capitalism's promotion of productivity has contributed to the progress of socialism, and socialism's transformation of production relations has overcome the disadvantages of capitalism. Mankind will blaze a path of progress and bright reality in the mutually beneficial cooperation between capitalism and socialism.

Book excerpt: As China enters its proclaimed ‘New Era’ under President Xi Jinping, this book examines changes and continuity in social relations and political development, investigating new developments against the backdrop of continuations of long-term trends and previous policies. What has remained outside many scholarly discussions is a larger backdrop of continuity, into which the policies of Xi Jinping’s administration are inserted to further shape social, economic and political trajectories in contemporary China. Presented as a volume of methodologically diverse studies exploring some of the key aspects of social and political development in contemporary China, its authors examine the structural factors that continue to exert influence on China’s trajectory – in the ‘New Era’, as before – at the deeper and subtler levels. This is the first publication of its kind to focus on how continuity and change interplay under Xi; it enables readers to appreciate both genuine novelties and the enduring, long-term trends, as well as to estimate future trends in the proclaimed ‘New Era’ and beyond. Social Relations and Political Development in China will be of significant interest to students and scholars of Chinese studies, political science and sociology.

Book excerpt: Xi Jinping's new era of socialist economic thought, rooted in the great practice of China's economic construction, systematically explains the issue of China's economic development and reform, and clearly answers the important questions of how the economic situation is to be judged, how to judge the development stage, how to determine the development goals, and how to do economic work. Xi Jinping's new era of the socialist economy with Chinese characteristics, system integrity, broad depth, logic and strict, each aspect of the discourse has a creative and vital point of view, forward-looking strategic deployment and "four beams and eight pillars" of the key initiatives. Combining the in-depth study of Xi Jinping's new era socialist ideology with Chinese characteristics and the spirit of the Party's 19th National Congress, this paper tries to sort out Xi Jinping's new era socialist economic thought with Chinese characteristics from five aspects, such as direction theory, goal theory, epistemology, strategy theory, and bottom-line theory.

Book excerpt: Instead of emphasizing China as a developing country, Chinese President Xi Jinping has identified China as a big power and accentuated China’s big power status. This book explores the narratives and driving forces behind China's big power ambition. Three narratives rooted in Sino-centralism are examined. One is China’s demands for the reform of global governance to reflect the values and interests of China as a rising power. Another is China’s Belt and Road Initiative to construct a nascent China-centred world order. The third is the China model and self-image promotion in the developing countries. There are many forces that have driven or constrained China’s big power ambition. This collection focuses on two sets of forces. One is China’s domestic politics and economic incentives and disincentives. The other is China’s geo-political and geo-economic interests. These forces have both motivated and constrained China’s big power ambition. The chapters in this book were originally published in the Journal of Contemporary China.

Book excerpt: A trusted economic commentator provides a penetrating account of the threats to China's continued economic riseUnder President Xi Jinping, China has become a large and confident power both at home and abroad, but the country also faces serious challenges. In this critical take on China’s future, economist George Magnus explores four key traps that China must confront and overcome in order to thrive: debt, middle income, the Renminbi, and an aging population. Looking at the political direction President Xi Jinping is taking, Magnus argues that Xi’s authoritarian and repressive philosophy is ultimately not compatible with the country’s economic aspirations.Thorough and well researched, the book also investigates the potential for conflicts over trade, China’s evolving relationship with Trump, and the country’s attempt to win influence and control in Eurasia through the Belt and Road initiative.
