Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymeric fibers are highly oriented semi-crystalline materials. High performance fibers with smaller diameter and fewer defects have higher strength than bulk materials. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or nanofibers (CNFs) have exceptionally high tensile strength modulus. Polymer fibers reinforced with CNTs or CNFs as nano-fillers are one of the most promising nanocomposites. To fully benefit from the unique mechanical properties of these nano-fillers, a better understanding of reinforcing mechanisms, especially load-transfer between matrix and fillers, is critical. X-ray scattering/diffraction is an ideal tool to look into the structure and morphology of materials over the length scale 1 nm to 100 nm. Synchtrotron x-ray radiation with its high brilliance enables in-situ dynamic measurement and is an effective method to monitor the structural and morphological chances in materials with hierarchical structure. Two-dimensional (2D) scattering data that are obtained from fibers need to be properly analyzed to fully characterize the hierarchical structure. In the work described in this dissertation, in situ small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) were obtained during tensile deformation of solution-spun and gel-spun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers with or without nano-reinforcement. 2D elliptical analyses methods were developed to extract the significant features of 2D x-ray scattering data and correlated to structure and morphology of the fiber. The WAXS showed PAN to have zigzag and helical conformation that are intimately associated to the crystal lattice. It was found that the presence of nano-fillers alter the structure of polymer matrix at the molecular scale. At 10-100 nm length scale, the PAN filament can be modeled as fibrils with crystalline, amorphous domains and voids. These voids provide the electron density contrast for SAXS. PAN has non-lamellar structure that results in diffuse SAXS patterns. It was found that the voids were surrounded by fibrils and oriented the same manner as crystals. Processing conditions and fillers affect the distribution, size and behaviors of voids. These structural details enhance our understanding of the factors that control the ultimate mechanical properties of nano-reinforced polymer fibers.

Book excerpt: The results in this dissertation set the ground to answer a fundamental question in data-driven polymer material science: "Why don't prepared composites show less fatigue than the pure plastics?" A simultaneous analysis of mechanical testing and small angle X-Ray scattering from the DESY source in Hamburg has been applied to approach this question, which is also central to the European research project "Nanotough", and the results are clearly presented in this book. The evolution of the materials structure is visualized and quantitatively analyzed from exhaustive sequences of scattering images. Three different classes of polymer composites are presented as typical and illustrative examples. The obtained results illustrate that the interactions of their components can cause unpredictable structural effects, ultimaltely leading to a weakening of the material, where a reinforcement was expected.

Book excerpt: Reasoned and based on the difference between discovery and invention, according to the traditional conception, science can be distinguished between basic science and applied science. Nevertheless, we know that the sciences are inseparable. A century or more ago, Louis Pasteur said "there is no applied science, there are applications of science." With this assertion, he establishes the logic of complementarity between them. Science certainly goes beyond its own material application and brings us to issues that have intrigued humanity for a long time. During the many years that we have been working with techniques of material characterization, we observed that this complementarity was not always understood by the researchers. In line with the reasoning that the technique joined with science generates technology, the application of techniques that use x-ray and neutron sources seems to us of fundamental importance for the development of technology. In this way, we present in this book how the existing technology of material characterization can contribute to science and applied technology. The authors who contributed with this book sought to show the importance of applying the existing techniques in the development of their works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray computed tomography (CT) continues to experience rapid growth, both in basic technology and new clinical applications. Seven years after its first edition, Computed Tomography: Principles, Design, Artifacts, and Recent Advancements, Second Edition, provides an overview of the evolution of CT, the mathematical and physical aspects of the technology, and the fundamentals of image reconstruction algorithms. Image display is examined from traditional methods used through the most recent advancements. Key performance indices, theories behind the measurement methodologies, and different measurement phantoms in image quality are discussed. The CT scanner is broken down into components to provide the reader with an understanding of their function, their latest advances, and their impact on the CT system. General descriptions and different categories of artifacts, their causes, and their corrections are considered at length. Given the high visibility and public awareness of the impact of x-ray radiation, the second edition features a new chapter on x-ray dose and presents different dose reduction techniques ranging from patient handling, optimal data acquisition, image reconstruction, and post-process. Based on the advancements over the past five years, the second edition added new sections on cone beam reconstruction algorithms, nonconventional helical acquisition and reconstruction, new reconstruction approaches, and dual-energy CT. Finally, new to this edition is a set of problems for each chapter, providing opportunities to enhance reader comprehension and practice the application of covered material.

It is the result of the authors' many years of academic and industrial experience. Introductory chapters deal with the basic concepts of both polymer morphology and processing and microscopy and imaging theory. The core of the book is more applied, with many examples of specimen preparation and image interpretation leading to materials characterization. Emerging techniques such as compositional mapping in which microscopy is combined with spectroscopy are considered. The book closes with a problem solving guide.
