Some served in a time of high adventure; some were not as brave as others; some drank too much; some were pawns of politics, and others were escaping shadowy pasts. As Gorzalka chronicles the life of each sheriff in Wyoming's territorial days, their successes, failures, and motivation, the stories combine to create the era's history. Chapters on all fifty-five territorial sheriffs. Photos of most.

Download or read book Lawless Wyoming written by Sid Shipp and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-28 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawless WyomingThe Governor of the Wyoming Territory, John Wesley Holt, was pushing hard to bring the territory into statehood. According to congress, Wyoming still had a few things to clean up before statehood could be approved. The main problem is the number of robberies and murders by the Keyhorn Gang which appears to be operating out of Sweetwater County. The banks and train owners, plus the huge amount of cattle being stolen from the larger ranchers in Wyoming had the lobbyists knocking on politician's doors. Until Wyoming gets its criminal faction under control Wyoming will not be considered for statehood. The many pulp stories wrote about the Keyhorn Gang had brought notoriety about their untrue adventures all the way back to the east. They are becoming as well known as the James Gang. This notoriety is not welcomed in the east at this time. A committee in Washington thinks that if they could clean up the gang of outlaws it would go a long way in showing that they have the problem under control. The main problem is the territory has no territorial police force, like the Texas Rangers and the Arizona Rangers, so the outlaws run from county to county beyond each sheriff's authorities. Once the Keyhorn Gang started down the outlaw trail that runs all the way to Mexico, Wyoming had no authority to pursue them. The governor had only one last resort. The governor asked the United States Government for help and was assigned two Special United States Marshals badges with permission to hire whoever he wanted. The governor searched the whole territory of Wyoming and has come to the decision that Max Stonehill was the man he wanted to take on the task of cleaning up Sweetwater County. The man perfect to do the job was a noted bounty hunter, by the name of Max Stonehill. But he was in the Territorial Prison for cattle rustling for the next three years. The deal the governor made with Max Stonehill, would either bring them closer to statehood or slam the door on it for years. It was a risky endeavor but it was one the governor thought was worth taking. Max Stonehill would be freed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the dry Wyoming summer of 1887, grass and water were in short supply and men, pistols drawn, were ready to fight and die for what little the valley had left to offer. But wet or dry, hot or cold, there was always payday Saturday night on which to let off steam and maybe settle a few old scores. Into this volatile landscape rode a tired ex lawman on a big pinto horse. There was thunder in John Dancer's past and lightening in his gunhand and when he once again pinned on his badge, every hand seemed turned against him. However, he was not alone, for Helen Bishop saw her future beside the tired lawman....
Book Synopsis Assault on the Deadwood Stage by : Robert K. DeArment
Download or read book Assault on the Deadwood Stage written by Robert K. DeArment and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1870s, Deadwood was a thriving—and largely lawless—boomtown. And as any fan of western history and films knows, stagecoach robberies were a regular feature of life in this fabled region of Dakota Territory. Now, for the first time, Robert K. DeArment tells the story of the "good guys and bad guys" behind these violent crimes: the road agents who wreaked havoc on Deadwood's roadways and the shotgun messengers who battled to protect stagecoach passengers and their valuable cargo. DeArment shows in dramatic detail how for two years gangs of robbers ruled the road, perpetrating holdups and killings, until lawmen and stage-company and railroad agents finally brought an end to the mayhem. The characters populating this violent tale include such legendary figures as Wild Bill Hickok and the famous railroad detective James L. "Whispering" Smith, a formidable opponent of bandits. We also get to know the men who operated the stages, the lawmen and company men who ran and defended the coaches, and the outlaws who fought against them. DeArment tells where these men came from and what became of them after the outlawry ended. He ends his account in the 1880s with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and its spectacular rendition of a shotgun robbery, featuring an actual Deadwood stagecoach. After nearly a century and a half, the Deadwood stage continues to command our attention.
