Book excerpt: In 2000, NETL conducted a review of the adequacy of the resource characterization databases used in its Gas Systems Analysis Model (GSAM). This review indicated that the most striking deficiency in GSAM's databases was the poor representation of the vast resource believed to exist in low-permeability sandstone accumulations in western U.S. basins. The model's databases, which are built primarily around the United States Geological Survey (USGS) 1995 National Assessment (for undiscovered resources), reflected an estimate of the original-gas-inplace (OGIP) only in accumulations designated?technically-recoverable? by the USGS -roughly 3% to 4% of the total estimated OGIP of the region. As these vast remaining resources are a prime target of NETL programs, NETL immediately launched an effort to upgrade its resource characterizations. Upon review of existing data, NETL concluded that no existing data were appropriate sources for its modeling needs, and a decision was made to conduct new, detailed log-based, gas-in-place assessments.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Preliminary Report on the Utilization of Petroleum and Natural Gas in Wyoming The presence of oil and natural gas in Wyoming has been known for a long time, and many more or less sporadic attempts have been made to develop these resources commercially, but owing to a num ber of factors, such as inadequate transportation facilities, lack of capital, and poorly advised prospecting, it has been only within recent years that Wyoming has taken other than a minor part in oil production. With the successful development of the Salt Creek field north of Casper, however, prospecting received a new and vigorous impetus, and at the present time many rigs are being Operated at widely scattered localities in the endeavor to develop other equally remunerative territory. Gas has been discovered in the State in considerable quantity, notably in the Bighorn Basin, but owing to marketing limitations this resource has thus far not been utilized fully. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Basin and Greybull Oil and Gas Fields, Bighorn County, Wyoming The first of these structures to be successfully tested by deep boring is known as the Peay Hill anticline and is situated a short distance southeast of Greybull, Wyoming, at the junction of the Bighorn and Greybull Rivers. In July, 1907, the Peay Hill Oil Development Co. Obtained a high pressure gas well on the east bank of the Bighorn River, in Sec. 21, T. 52 N., R. 93 W., which, from its ability to maintain a strong, steady flow of gas for months without visible signs of diminution was the first good proof of the existence of appreciable quantities of gas, and possibly also oil, in these anticlinals. Book excerpt: Oil and gas well completion and stimulation technologies to develop unconventional hydrocarbon resources in the United States have evolved over the past several decades, particularly in relation to the development of shale oil and shale gas. Shale oil and shale gas resources and the technology associated with their production are often termed "unconventional" because the oil and gas trapped inside the shale or other low-permeability rock formation cannot be extracted using conventional technologies. Since about 2005, the application of these technologies to fields in the U.S. have helped produce natural gas and oil in volumes that allowed the country to reduce its crude oil imports by more than 50% and to become a net natural gas exporter. The regional and national economic and energy advances gained through production and use of these resources have been accompanied, however, by rapid expansion of the infrastructure associated with the development of these fields and public concern over the impacts to surface- and groundwater, air, land, and communities where the resources are extracted. The intent of the first day of the workshop of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Roundtable on Unconventional Hydrocarbon Development was to discuss onshore unconventional hydrocarbon development in the context of potential environmental impacts and the ways in which the risks of these kinds of impacts can be managed. Specifically, the workshop sought to examine the lifecycle development of these fields, including decommissioning and reclamation of wells and related surface and pipeline infrastructure, and the approaches from industry practice, scientific research, and regulation that could help to ensure management of the operations in ways that minimize impacts to the environment throughout their active lifetimes and after operations have ceased. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
