Why would anyone want to kill him? But a look at Glynn's background reveals tension within the family. Alfred Glynn, an eccentric recluse, has born a grudge against his brother for years. The other brother, Maurice, argued bitterly with Matthew over the sale of family land. His sister Sara is caught out in several crucial lies to the police. Add to this a discontented son, the discovery of valuable documents in the bookseller's safe, and the mysterious, still unexplained disappearance of Matthew's wife years earlier, and Wycliffe faces one of his most impenetrable cases yet. And then another Glynn dies . . .

Book excerpt: John Wyclif is known for translating the Vulgate Bible into English, and for arguing for the royal divestment of the church, the reduction of papal power and the elimination of the friars and against the doctrine of transubstantiation. His thought catalyzed the Lollard movement in England and provided an ideology for the Hussite revolution in Bohemia. Wyclif's Trialogus discusses divine power and knowledge, creation, virtues and vices, the Incarnation, redemption and the sacraments. It consists of a three-way conversation, which Wyclif wrote to familiarize priests and layfolk with the complex issues underlying Christian doctrine, and begins with formal philosophical theology, which moves into moral theology, concluding with a searing critique of the fourteenth-century ecclesiastical status quo. Stephen Lahey provides a complete English translation of all four books, and the 'Supplement to the Trialogue', which will be a valuable resource for scholars and students currently relying on selective translated extracts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteenth century was a dark time for the church in England. Superstition and error obscured the truth of the gospel, and even the clergy had little knowledge of the Bible. Against this bleak backdrop, God raised up a scholar and preacher who would stand with conviction on His Word, even if it meant standing alone. Trusting Scripture as his highest authority, John Wycliffe believed the Bible was what England needed most. Only through the Word of God would the Holy Spirit reform hearts and, in turn, reform the church. But for this to happen, Wycliffe knew that everyday people needed to have the Bible in their own language. In The Bible Convictions of John Wycliffe, Dr. Steven Lawson tells how Wycliffe's devotion to the gospel made him the forerunner of the Reformation who translated the Bible into English for the first time. We're indebted to him for our English Bibles today, and his story can encourage us to establish our convictions on God's Word. This book is part of the Long Line of Godly Men Profile series, edited by Dr. Steven Lawson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unfathomable loss. Unmerited suffering. Why is this happening to me? For centuries people have tried to understand the reasons for suffering and grief. When we cannot connect our woes to wrongs we have done, we conclude that our suffering is undeserved and unfair. Like Job, we struggle to understand our pain. The universality of suffering makes the book of Job appealing, but the treatment of that theme often makes the book difficult to comprehend. Nonetheless, this section of Scripture offers powerful lessons for your life. Dr. Roy Zuck directs his commentary toward the layman. His clear, organized insights can reveal important truths for the struggling Christian. The uncomplicated, outlined content is suitable for both individual and group study. You can learn from Job's suffering--as well as from your own.

This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In making this edition of Wycliffe's monumental work the Publisher has had to make a number of decisions that affect the final outcome of the work. Some of these decisions may be welcomed by the reading public and some perhaps not. All of the decisions were made with the reader in mind. Our intention was to produce an edition of Wycliffe's Bible translation that was reasonably priced and to do this it must be in one volume. This has meant choosing a large paper format. Other smaller sized editions are over 800 pages. We chose a larger paper size that results in around 250 pages less. We chose a font that is recognized as easily readable at smaller sizes. Adobe Garamond, 10 pt. was selected. We have tested it and have not found it to be an uncomfortable reading size. If you have reasonable eyesight, you will not need a magnifying glass, as has been reportedly needed for other modern reprints. We hope you like it. Some will complain that we have not inserted indents and paragraphing. Again, this is a massive volume and we have tried to produce a book that is within one volume so that it is commercially viable for us and you the reader. It has also meant not including any of the introductions by Wycliffe, Jerome and others, or notes that were a part of the original. Hence the subtitle "Text Edition". We understand this will not be to everyone's liking, but we are limited, by the printer, to how many pages our books can be. At the size we chose we are almost at capacity. At a smaller size we could have done over 800 pages, but we still would have had to cram the same amount of text in. So the problem would be the same. The only way around this problem would have been to produce two large volumes and at this time we do question the viability of such an undertaking. However, if it is clear that there is a great demand for it, we may bring out a new two volume edition with that additional text. This may also enable us to insert indents and paragraphing. This work was first produced in the late Middle Ages. The language is therefore extremely archaic. So much so that some of the letters have evolved and changed since then. This edition contains all modern letters, but does not contain modern spelling. It is therefore, not a "Modern Edition" in this sense. The yogh for example has been replaced as necessary. Purists will complain, but we hope for the average reader this will not present much of a problem. It will hopefully give the reader a text as close to the original yet still possible to be read and, with a little work, understood.

Every year, at Halloween, high on the Cornish cliffs, a life-sized effigy of a man is strapped to a blazing wheel and run into the sea - a re-enactment of a hideous old legend where the figure had been a living sacrifice. And now Jonathan Riddle, well-known and respected local builder and undertaker, has disappeared - and it seems all too likely that his corpse has gone the way of the historic 'scapegoat'. As Chief Superintendent Wycliffe begins to investigate, more and more unpleasant facts emerge until he is left with an incredible, and seemingly impossible, solution . . .

Book excerpt: 'Mel Starr has done it again with another brilliant Sir Hugh de Singleton medieval mystery to keep readers guessing until the very end. [.] I was there at the Queen's College, dining on pottage, getting soaked in the rain in fourteenth-century Oxford - Mel always draws you into the experience.' Toni Mount, author of the Sebastian Foxley murder mystery series One of Master John Wycliffe’s scholars is found dead after a thunderstorm. Was he struck by lightning, or was there something more sinister to his death? Scholar Richard Sabyn, a particularly obnoxious fellow, was believed to have been struck by lightning. However, Master Wycliffe believes otherwise and calls upon Sir Hugh de Singleton for help. Sir Hugh shares Wycliffe’s suspicions and launches a private investigation, learning that it might indeed be possible to make it look as though a man has died from a lightning strike. But who would go to all that effort, and why? When fellow scholar Simon Duby dies, it raises even more questions and suspicions. What is the connection between the two men? Sir Hugh believes a bronze pot, a bucket of urine, and a small quantity of charcoal and brimstone may hold the answer. During a bleak 1375, can he survive the insidious plague and several attempts on his life as he continues his quest for truth?

Book excerpt: When the Puritans stepped ashore at the present day Plymouth, Massachusetts on 15 November 1620, they were but the final link of a four hundred year old chain of events starting with King John of England in the early 1200’s. WYCLIFFE’S PLYMOUTH ROCK starts with an act of vassalage by King John who resigned the entire kingdom of England to the Pope in Rome, thereby starting a split in the relationship of church and state in England. Shortly after, a Doctor of Divinity, John Wycliffe, did the unthinkable; he translated the Bible into the language of the masses – English. The scriptural genie was out of the bottle. Wycliffe’s followers, the Lollards picked up the baton and ran with it starting a pre-reformation movement in England, one hundred-fifty years before Martin Luther. The followers of the Lollards, the New Learners, continued “getting in the face” of the Roman Catholic Church and the persecutions started; imprisonments, tortures and finally burnings at the stake. With the installation of Queen Mary – Bloody Mary, the tortures and burnings reached their zenith, first by the Church of Rome, then by the Church of England. Finally, the new Lollards, the Puritans, came on the scene, but also suffered persecutions causing them to flee England for the Netherlands. It is from here the Puritans made their exodus to America.
