Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life contains intense battles. When it has been infiltrated by heartache, suffering, and evil how does one move past it and leave the trauma behind? When our faith and belief clash with reality and crush us between the two, how in the world does one survive the force? Bitter, Broken, Blessed is the true story of a woman caught in such circumstances. Facing enemy forces that she does not understand, her desire is to be strong and steadfast in her faith. When her resolve weakens and strength eludes her, how does she continue on the journey? When life becomes devastating and full of destruction, can she survive? Can she be put back together after hitting bottom and shattering, crashing so hard there is little hope for survival? Life can get quite overwhelming at times. Many of us manage to trudge through and arrive on the other side of our trials, battered but not completely broken. Somehow, we manage to find the courage and stamina to get up and keep going. Some of us struggle with our faith in the process, and we cannot grasp the concept of how everything that happens works together for good and the glory of God. The resilient spirit of mankind is incredible, and our design is quite unique; this is because God does exist, and He is the Divine Creator. All things are possible through Him, even deliverance from the most horrific events and darkest corners of existence. There is unmitigated power in the cross of Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian Society and the Orthodox Church examines the Russian Orthodox Church's social and political role and its relationship to civil society in post-Communist Russia. It shows how Orthodox prelates, clergy and laity have shaped Russians' attitudes towards religious and ideological pluralism, which in turn have influenced the ways in which Russians understand civil society, including those of its features - pluralism and freedom of conscience - that are essential for a functioning democracy. It shows how the official church, including the Moscow Patriarchate, has impeded the development of civil society, while on the other hand the non-official church, including nonconformist clergy and lay activists, has promoted concepts central to civil society.

Book excerpt: What others find in CAST YOUR NETS It is said that a good sermon is delivered with the Bible in one hand and the daily newspaper in the other. Mark Miller adds a fishing rod to the mix, salting his wise reflections on ministry, faith, and life with insights that can only come while patiently waiting for the elusive yet exciting tug of the Spirit or a sockeye. John Thomas, General Minister and President, United Church of Christ Mark Henry Miller notices little things that the rest of us often miss: the person in the corner who doesn't go along with what others see as a consensus, the surprising kind act by the contentious opponent, the fish swimming upstream. And he thinks about what he has noticed and shares what he has learned. He shows us how to reflect in the midst of practice, which is essential to effective ministry. William McKinney--President, Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, CA Mark writes with wit, humor, and grace. His insights will stay with you long after the reading is done. --Jim Thayer, novelist and professor Short, pithy, inspirational stories for everyday ministry--a good source for daily devotional material, provocative meeting openers or sermon illustrations. Each epistle has an easily grasped point that touches a deep spiritual issue or practice of both ministry and everyday life lived with intentional faithfulness. Paul Forman, United Church of Christ Minister Mark Henry Miller's always insightful, sometimes whimsical pastoral epistles are a delight and a challenge to read - challenging our everyday way of seeing things and letting us glimpse a bit of what might be if we only have eyes to see and ears to hear and hearts to love. Joanne Carlson Brown, Methodist Minister

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A field-tested, pragmatic, and resourceful guide to the daunting and logistically complex management of local church. Pastors generally feel equipped to deal with biblical studies, theological questions, preaching responsibilities, and pastoral care. But when it comes to budgets, insurance, fire safety, and church management many find themselves at a loss. Often lay leaders within the congregation flounder with these tasks as well. Here, finally, is the ultimate reference guide for the practical management of the parish. Originally created as a sourcebook for the authors' week-long course on church management and administration at the Claremont School of Theology, the manual in draft version has been field-tested by hundreds of pastors and lay leaders. Not simply a theoretical resource, the Manual provides suggestions for almost every aspect of parish administration: position descriptions, various financial forms, materials for stewardship and Christian education, building use and safety issues, employee record keeping, and much more. Whether pastors are just out of seminary or well-seasoned in parish life, the Manual is full of excellent guidelines, tools, and forms for improving the management of the parish.
