Book excerpt: This book is designed to serve as a textbook for a course on ordinary differential equations, which is usually a required course in most science and engineering disciplines and follows calculus courses. The book begins with linear algebra, including a number of physical applications, and goes on to discuss first-order differential equations, linear systems of differential equations, higher order differential equations, Laplace transforms, nonlinear systems of differential equations, and numerical methods used in solving differential equations. The style of presentation of the book ensures that the student with a minimum of assistance may apply the theorems and proofs presented. Liberal use of examples and homework problems aids the student in the study of the topics presented and applying them to numerous applications in the real scientific world. This textbook focuses on the actual solution of ordinary differential equations preparing the student to solve ordinary differential equations when exposed to such equations in subsequent courses in engineering or pure science programs. The book can be used as a text in a one-semester core course on differential equations, alternatively it can also be used as a partial or supplementary text in intensive courses that cover multiple topics including differential equations.

Book excerpt: This book is a mathematically rigorous introduction to the beautiful subject of ordinary differential equations for beginning graduate or advanced undergraduate students. Students should have a solid background in analysis and linear algebra. The presentation emphasizes commonly used techniques without necessarily striving for completeness or for the treatment of a large number of topics. The first half of the book is devoted to the development of the basic theory: linear systems, existence and uniqueness of solutions to the initial value problem, flows, stability, and smooth dependence of solutions upon initial conditions and parameters. Much of this theory also serves as the paradigm for evolutionary partial differential equations. The second half of the book is devoted to geometric theory: topological conjugacy, invariant manifolds, existence and stability of periodic solutions, bifurcations, normal forms, and the existence of transverse homoclinic points and their link to chaotic dynamics. A common thread throughout the second part is the use of the implicit function theorem in Banach space. Chapter 5, devoted to this topic, the serves as the bridge between the two halves of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the theory of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), starting from an introductory level (with no prior experience in ODEs assumed) through to a graduate-level treatment of the qualitative theory, including bifurcation theory (but not chaos). While proofs are rigorous, the exposition is reader-friendly, aiming for the informality of face-to-face interactions. A unique feature of this book is the integration of rigorous theory with numerous applications of scientific interest. Besides providing motivation, this synthesis clarifies the theory and enhances scientific literacy. Other features include: (i) a wealth of exercises at various levels, along with commentary that explains why they matter; (ii) figures with consistent color conventions to identify nullclines, periodic orbits, stable and unstable manifolds; and (iii) a dedicated website with software templates, problem solutions, and other resources supporting the text (www.math.duke.edu/ode-book). Given its many applications, the book may be used comfortably in science and engineering courses as well as in mathematics courses. Its level is accessible to upper-level undergraduates but still appropriate for graduate students. The thoughtful presentation, which anticipates many confusions of beginning students, makes the book suitable for a teaching environment that emphasizes self-directed, active learning (including the so-called inverted classroom).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an authoritative, unified overview of the methods and results concerning the global properties of linear differential equations of order n (n>=2). It does not, however, seek to be comprehensive. Rather, it contains a selection of results which richly illustrate the unified approach presented. By making use of recent methods and results from many different areas of mathematics and by introducing several original methods, global solutions of problems previously studied only locally are given. The structure of global transformations is described algebraically, and a new geometrical approach is introduced which leads to global canonical forms suitable for Cartan's moving frame-of-reference method. The theory discussed also provides effective tools for solving some open problems, especially relating to the distribution of zeros of solutions. In addition, the theory of functional equations plays an important role in studying the asymptotic behaviour of solutions. Applications to differential geometry and functional equations are also described. The volume is largely self-contained. This book is for mathematicians, computer scientists, physicists, chemists, engineers, and others whose work involves the use of linear differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most texts in differential equations, this textbook gives an early presentation of the Laplace transform, which is then used to motivate and develop many of the remaining differential equation concepts for which it is particularly well suited. For example, the standard solution methods for constant coefficient linear differential equations are immediate and simplified, and solution methods for constant coefficient systems are streamlined. By introducing the Laplace transform early in the text, students become proficient in its use while at the same time learning the standard topics in differential equations. The text also includes proofs of several important theorems that are not usually given in introductory texts. These include a proof of the injectivity of the Laplace transform and a proof of the existence and uniqueness theorem for linear constant coefficient differential equations. Along with its unique traits, this text contains all the topics needed for a standard three- or four-hour, sophomore-level differential equations course for students majoring in science or engineering. These topics include: first order differential equations, general linear differential equations with constant coefficients, second order linear differential equations with variable coefficients, power series methods, and linear systems of differential equations. It is assumed that the reader has had the equivalent of a one-year course in college calculus.

Book excerpt: Mathematics is playing an ever more important role in the physical and biological sciences, provoking a blurring of boundaries between scientific disciplines and a resurgence bf interest in the modern as well as the clas sical techniques of applied mathematics. This renewal of interest, both in research and teaching, has led to the establishment of the series: Texts in Applied Mat!!ematics (TAM). The development of new courses is a natural consequence of a high level of excitement oil the research frontier as newer techniques, such as numerical and symbolic cotnputer systems, dynamical systems, and chaos, mix with and reinforce the traditional methods of applied mathematics. Thus, the purpose of this textbook series is to meet the current and future needs of these advances and encourage the teaching of new courses. TAM will publish textbooks suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses, and will complement the Applied Math ematical Sciences (AMS) series, which will focus on advanced textbooks and research level monographs. Preface to the Second Edition This book covers those topics necessary for a clear understanding of the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations and the concept of a dynamical system. It is written for advanced undergraduates and for beginning graduate students. It begins with a study of linear systems of ordinary differential equations, a topic already familiar to the student who has completed a first course in differential equations.

Book excerpt: The topic of the 2010 Abel Symposium, hosted at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Oslo, was Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, the study of which is of fundamental importance in mathematics and in almost all of natural sciences, economics, and engineering. This area of mathematics is currently in the midst of an unprecedented development worldwide. Differential equations are used to model phenomena of increasing complexity, and in areas that have traditionally been outside the realm of mathematics. New analytical tools and numerical methods are dramatically improving our understanding of nonlinear models. Nonlinearity gives rise to novel effects reflected in the appearance of shock waves, turbulence, material defects, etc., and offers challenging mathematical problems. On the other hand, new mathematical developments provide new insight in many applications. These proceedings present a selection of the latest exciting results by world leading researchers.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear difference equations of order greater than one are of paramount impor tance in applications where the (n + 1)st generation (or state) of the system depends on the previous k generations (or states). Such equations also appear naturally as discrete analogues and as numerical solutions of differential and delay differential equations which model various diverse phenomena in biology, ecology, physiology, physics, engineering and economics. Our aim in this monograph is to initiate a systematic study of the global behavior of solutions of nonlinear scalar difference equations of order greater than one. Our primary concern is to study the global asymptotic stability of the equilibrium solution. We are also interested in whether the solutions are bounded away from zero and infinity, in the description of the semi cycles of the solutions, and in the existence of periodic solutions. This monograph contains some recent important developments in this area together with some applications to mathematical biology. Our intention is to expose the reader to the frontiers of the subject and to formulate some important open problems that require our immediate attention.
