Excerpt: Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps (officially abbreviated to SgtMajMarCor, and unofficially as SMMC) is a unique non-commissioned rank and billet in the United States Marine Corps. In the Marine Corps, sergeant major is the ninth and highest enlisted rank, just above first sergeant, and equal in grade to master gunnery sergeant, although the two have different responsibilities. Sergeant major is both a rank and a military billet, and serves as the unit commander's senior enlisted advisor and to handle matters of discipline and morale among the enlisted Marines. The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps is chosen by the Commandant of the Marine Corps to serve as his advisor and as the preeminent and highest ranking enlisted Marine with a protocol equivalency of a lieutenant general. This continued until 1946, when the rank was abolished, only to be re-introduced in 1954 as part of the Marine Corps rank structure. The post of Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps was established in 1957 as the senior enlisted advisor to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, the first such post in any...

Both of the injured men were on stretchers with ropes attached to the medic aircraft, so the rescue party quickly hoisted them aboard. The enemy fire was nearing, so the medic rescue jet had to take off quickly. Since Corporal Collins was not aboard yethe was still in the waterthe crew promised him that they would return for him. The above is just one paragraph from the many riveting story lines that tell the biography of Master Gunnery Sergeant Willie L. Collins, affectionately known as Top by his crew. This is a story about an American family who happens to be African American, and it is spellbinding, interesting, and a feel-good story that needs to be told.

As his favorite daughter-in-law, I have had the distinct honor of sitting down with this incredibly fine Marine in his 91st year to record in words and pictures the amazing story of his life. I offer his tribute as a tribute to all Veterans, and to all who read this book, in hopes of inspiring patriotism and bringing out that true Marine spirit which surely lives in the souls of all of us who love America.
