Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, podiatric medicine has evolved significantly in both its depth and scope of practice. Continual innovation and a dynamic response to the call for evidence-based practice have led to a rapid revolution in podiatric education, research and practice. Podiatry plays a pivotal role in the early assessment, diagnosis and management of lower limb pathologies as well as in the detection and monitoring of long-term conditions. The time dedicated to podiatric consultation provides an opportunity for dialogue and interaction which places the profession at the heart of public health education. Having a unique role in patient care, podiatrists gain a particular insight into the holistic lives of their patients, and are therefore highly valued members of the extended multidisciplinary team in both primary and secondary care. Podiatric medicine is based on the cognitive and applied understanding of anatomy, physiology, biomedical, psychosocial and physical sciences. Consequently, podiatrists are now able to offer care encompassing a diverse range of diagnostic skills and management strategies. Since comorbidities, polypharmacy and ambulatory wellbeing issues present across all ages, podiatrists need to maintain the health of increasing numbers of patients who present with complex medical conditions. All these professional developments have led to a need for specialist textbooks reflecting the enhanced role of podiatrists in the wider context of health and wellbeing. This landmark publication offers a single source of reference for the structural and functional capacity of all major body systems. It also provides an insight into the social complexities of working with patients, their families and carers in everyday clinical practice. In adopting this holistic approach to patient care, this text is the first in the discipline to integrate sociological perspectives, public health education and the complexities of mental illness with traditional chapters on human anatomy and physiology. Edited and authored by an international team of experts on podiatric medicine, science and health, and utilising the latest research, this comprehensive textbook is destined to become a seminal text for the next generation of podiatrists, both as students and as healthcare professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard L Blake, D.P.M. is a practicing podiatrist in San Francisco, California, at the famed Center For Sports Medicine, St. Francis Memorial Hospital. This book is a good mixture of the art and science of that medical practice. The emphasis of the book is on the conservative treatments of injuries of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. Dr Blake emphasizes conservative, and when appropriate, simple approaches to these injuries. He tries hard to establish a healing environment for the patient at the first visit, and then works the patients through all the phases of rehabilitation. This book begins by covering some general topics like what rules not to break, then discusses general rehabilitation principles, general treatments of pain, bio-mechanical approaches to injury, and gait evaluation. He then describes some of the general rules of treatment concerning tendinitis, nerve injuries, and fractures. In the second part of the book, Dr Richard Blake uses many of these general principles and begins to describe top treatments for injuries in the front of the foot, mid part of the foot, heel area, ankle, achilles tendon area, and lower leg not involving the knee or above. Some of the more common injuries described are:Hallux Limitus/RigidusBunionsSesamoid InjuriesMetatarsalgiaMorton's NeuromaMetatarsal FracturesHammertoesCallusesBlistersCapsulitis or Plantar Plate TearsGoutToenail FungusLisfranc's SprainAccessory NavicularGanglion CystsPlantar FasciitisPlantar Fascial TearsCalcaneal Stress FracturesAnkle Sprains and InstabilitiesPosterior or Anterior Tibial TendinitisPosterior Tibial Tendon DysfunctionAchilles TendinitisAchilles RupturesCalf StrainShin SplintsTennis LegCompartment SyndromesTibial or Fibular Stress FracturesCramps or Deep Vein ThrombosisWith 95% of all of the lower extremity pain syndromes and injuries not requiring any form of surgery, a book specializing in a conservative and thoughtful approach to most ailments is very needed. Dr Rich Blake tries to get the patient very involved with their own healing is obvious throughout the book. The emphasis of a conservative approach must require the patient's involvement. This book will help the patient know the subtleties of various treatments like stretching, strengthening, starting to run, looking for a stable shoe, power lacing for stability, which injection to get for a neuroma, why not to use NSAIDs if bone injury is suspected, when support hose are not doing the right job, etc. Through the 35 years that Dr Richard Blake has practiced sports medicine, teaching his patients why certain treatments are used, and what they need to do, is always stressed. His teaching started with patients, but has involved both the national and international worlds of podiatry. He has given over 200 lectures around the world, written 40 plus articles, has a blog and YouTube channel, but his patient's needs and injuries have always come first. He considers his simple approach to most injuries probably boring to some podiatrists, but the patients have truly benefited. The approach that is emphasized in the book is to immediately create a healing environment, gradually get stronger, and gradually return to your previous activities. The book also emphasizes finding the cause or causes of the injury or it may eventually come back. The subtleties of the individual injury can be in the patient's presentation, how they respond to various treatments, and making changes appropriately when the treatment at times stalls.

Book excerpt: Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle represents a novel approach to treatment of orthopedic problems in the foot and ankle. The gradual change of philosophy in the management of foot and ankle surgery means that patients require a less invasive approach to surgery and a consequent improvement in recovery time. Describing the techniques and, importantly, the indications for minimally invasive procedures for the management of foot and ankle ailments, this book will explain the management of various conditions and how they can be approached using minimally invasive techniques. However, rather than only concentrating on minimally invasive surgery of the foot and ankle, the authors will be examining the options open to surgeons operating in this area – both open surgical and arthroscopic – and explaining the benefits of each. Extensive radiographs, diagrams, and intra-operative pictures will illustrate the procedures described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If I wanted to be a successful podiatrist the first thing I would do is read Tyson's book. In his own unique style, he shares exactly what he has done to be at the top of his game as one of the most successful podiatrists in the country. This is a book I strongly recommend." Andrew Griffiths (Australia's #1 Small Business Author) "When technology meets health, nobody integrates them into business better than Tyson Franklin." Scott Sorensen (Director Bodytech Systems & Footpoint Australia) Why do some Podiatrists have thriving, highly profitable businesses while others don't? Here's the simple truth: every successful Podiatrist thinks and behaves differently to every unsuccessful Podiatrist, and how you think and behave will have a direct influence on what you will or won't achieve in life, both personally and professionally. Does this mean that the amount of money you make equates to your level of success in Podiatry? No, it doesn't, but for some strange reason money does flow towards successful Podiatrists, and this book is all about learning what those successful Podiatrists do. From his many years experience running a highly profitable podiatry business, Tyson will share with you: where to locate your business to maximise traffic how to set your business apart from your competitors how to attract the right patients to help you enjoy your job more and increase your profits tips and techniques to streamline your operations how to find and keep the right staff the six Marketing Pillars that will get your message to the right people. It's No Secret, There's Money In Podiatry, however it will not happen overnight, it's something you have to work at for a number of years. It all starts with believing it's possible. By the time you put this book down you will be bouncing off the walls not just thinking it's a possibility but knowing how to make it a reality. Tyson Franklin was born with entrepreneurial DNA. Since graduating from the Queensland University of Technology in 1988, he has worked diligently towards being a successful podiatry business owner and a mentor to others. His long-term goal is to help younger Podiatrists avoid the same mistakes he made when first starting out in business, and to guide them to sustainable long-term success.

This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE GREAT RENAISSANCE ARTIST Leonardo da Vinci said, "The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art." It is hard to disagree with that. The human foot can be a thing of beauty, and usually functions extremely well. But when anything goes wrong with it, the human foot can be a source of nearly unbearable pain and frustration. Considering the amount of work it has to do, bearing up under great pressure as we walk or run, or even when we are only standing still, it is truly remarkable what the fragile human foot can manage. There are 26 bones in the human foot and ankle. That is one out of every four of the bones in the whole human body! In addition, there are 33 joints and 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. No wonder the foot requires its own special doctor. That specialist is the podiatrist. Podiatrists diagnose and treat illnesses, injuries, and deformities of the human feet and ankles including the foot muscles, joints, or bones. They work with children and seniors, athletes and the obese, civilians and veterans. The problems that podiatrists deal with can be relatively simple, like a corn that needs removing. They can also be extremely complicated, even to the point of requiring surgery. From the simplest to the most complicated cases, the podiatrist is rarely dealing with a patient who is not in significant pain. The term chiropodist is often confused with podiatrist. It is an older term for what was once the same profession. In the US, only the term podiatrist is used in reference to the fully-trained professional foot specialist. About 50 years ago, the US training schools changed their names to only include the word podiatry. Graduates were thereafter awarded a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree. Some podiatrists are clear that they chose this field because they were impatient to get to work. Getting licensed as a podiatrist requires a shorter period of education and training than some other medical fields. Podiatrists are more in demand than ever. Podiatry is projected to be one of the fastest growing healthcare occupations over the next decade, increasing at a rate double that for all occupations. The increase reflects a demand born largely out of the growing needs of two demographic groups. The US has an aging population that will face increased health challenges that are difficult to avoid, as many are part of the natural aging process. In addition, obesity is on the increase as is diabetes and both of these conditions can be the source of foot and ankle injuries and illnesses. Even the growing number of people today who are actively seeking to stay healthy through vigorous exercise contributes to the need for podiatrists, specifically those podiatrists who specialize in sports medicine. Podiatrists are in demand and the demand is growing, and so is the educational and training system. The profession, its individual members and organizations, are all working toward expanding the already rapid rate of growth. Changes are being made that will create more paths to professional acceptance than have previously been available, and the next few years and beyond should be ones of increasing opportunities for students who wish to become podiatrists.
