Book excerpt: To create this book, Moy has drawn on a lifetime of interest in coins and precious metals, leading up to his 2006 confirmation as director of the U.S. Mint. Under his tenure, demand for American gold bullion coins multiplied more than fivefold, from less than 330,000 ounces in 2007 to 1,800,000-plus ounces in 2009, and counting. The U.S. Mint went from a major producer to the world's largest producer of gold, silver, and platinum coins, with bullion coins accounting for the majority of the Mint's revenues.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Magnificent Collection of United States and Pioneer Gold Coins of Mr. Charles W. Cowell, Denver, Colorado: Including Some of the Greatest Rarities; Kellogg and Co. $50 Gold; Wass, Molitor $50 Gold; Complete Set Pikes Peak Coins, Including the 1850 $20, With View of Peak Mr. Chas. W. Cowell, now past his seventieth year, is one of the very first numismatists of this country and one of the Pioneer col lectors of the Pioneer gold coins, of which his collection is so rich in many of the greatest gems of this most interesting series.. He is a close student of the gold mint marks and of the minor varieties; and to his close study of all coins that come into his possession are due several discoveries of varieties heretofore unknown; chiefly among which is the excessively rare 1834 half-eagle with crossed four, - a variety Mr. Cowell discovered a few years ago. Mr. Cowell was most actively engaged in forming this collection years ago, and, of course, had the opportunity to secure the finest Specimens, as a careful perusal of this catalogue will readily show. While it is quite impossible to mention the numerous rarities of this collection in the preface, yet, it will not be out of place to call special attention to just a few of the greater rarities. In the pioneer series will be found some of the greatest rarities, - the Kellogg co. Gold piece, of which only thirteen specimens are known, is the gem of the collection; the Wass, Molitor and the three other varieties Of octagon gold pieces are about as fine as found; the Pikes Peak coins include the exceedingly rare 1860 and form the only and first complete set offered at auction; the Mormon coins, Miners' Bank, Norris, Griggs Norris and the many beautiful and rare Carolina and Georgia coins; also the largest collection Of California gold dollars, halves and quarter-dollars ever Offered. In United States gold, with the exception of the early half-eagles, the collection is nearly complete. And as regards the Mint Marks, this is, I believe, the most complete collection ever offered. This book was released on 2023-12-20 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tenth edition of Gold Coins of the World expands on its predecessor, digging more deeply into new areas of collector interest, and expanding many sections. From the coins of Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Byzantine Empire, and from Afghanistan through Zanzibar, it includes the addition of many new discoveries for dozens of countries. From the 384 pages of the 1958 edition, the work has expanded to 852 pages, which have been completely revised and updated. The authors have listed more than 22,000 coin types, which are illustrated with more than 8,500 photos—now, for the first time, each one of them in color. Each country’s section includes tables of weight and fineness. The market valuations are extensively revised to reflect both the higher price of gold as well as the skyrocketing demand for numismatic rarities. Valuations are now provided, for the first time, in up to three states of preservation. Many of the prices, especially for great rarities and coins in higher grades, have at least doubled. In fact, as collectors recognize the scarcity of coins in the highest states of preservation, the premium for such coins relative to lower-graded ones is escalating beyond traditional proportions. The coinage of India and the Islamic world, long dismissed by western collectors as difficult to decipher, unimportant, and lacking in value, is now the subject of intense interest, and has shown some of the most dramatic increases of all. The reader will also find a useful directory of the world’s leading gold-coin dealers and auction houses. For the numismatist, banker, economist, historian, or institution of higher learning, the tenth edition of Gold Coins of the World is a book for every library, public and private.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique and indispensable reference work Unsurpassed in content and scope When the first edition of Gold Coins of the World made its debut in 1958, it forever changed the way gold coins were collected, cataloged, traded, and priced. For the first time, one book provided a reliable guide for a subject which previously required an often expensive investment in multiple volumes of literature, some of it rare and antique, and much of it badly out-of-date. With the publication of this pioneering work, Robert Friedberg (1912-1963) established himself as an international icon in the field of numismatic literature. This book, and the 'Friedberg Numbering System' he developed became then, and is still today, the internationally-recognized standard for systematically identifying any gold coin ever made. From just 384 pages in 1958, Gold Coins of the World has expanded to the extent that it now contains more than triple the information of its ancestor. It still stands alone as the first and only book to describe, catalog and price two millennia of gold, platinum, and palladium coin issues from across the globe. From the first coins of the ancient Greeks to the most recently-issued modern commemoratives, they are all here, an astonishing compilation of more than 21,000 individual coin listings accompanied by over 8,000 actual-size photographs. The prices have been completely updated, for the most part raised substantially, to reflect the current market. Entire sections have been expanded, many illustrations have been added or improved, and hundreds of new discoveries and recent issues have been included for the first time. Arthur Friedberg, president of the International Association of Professional Numismatists from 2001 to 2007 and now its Honorary President, and Ira Friedberg, have completely revised and expanded their late father's work. They have had the valuable assistance and cooperation of a who's who of the leading numismatists on every continent in bringing this edition to fruition. For the numismatist, banker, economist, historian, institution of higher learning, or a fancier of the noble metal in all its forms, Gold Coins of the World is a book for every library, public and private.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalog of the Valuable Collection of United States Gold and Silver Coins of the Late Charles Gordon Zug, Esq., Of Pittsburgh In his early boyhood, the late Charles Gordon Zug, began his collection of coins, and gave much attention to the interesting study of his country's coinage. He was born in Pittsburg, June 10th, 1872, and died at the age of 36 years, August 10, 1908, from heart failure caused by over-exertion through excessive bicycle riding while a lad. He was engaged in the iron manufacturing business with his father in Pittsburg. During the last years of his life he turned his atten tion particularly to the United States Gold Series, and though lacking a few of the higher rareties, he formed a splendid collection of the mint series of gold coins - the Eagles, including the rare 1798 and 1804, the Half Eag les, 1823, '25 and '30, and the Quarter Eagles, 1796, '97, 1821 and '26; Three Dollars - the rareties of 1865, '73 and '76, the last a brilliant proof, and his complete set of Dollars. He added largely to this series at my sale of the great collection of the late David S. Wilson, March, 1907, where Mr. Zug was one of the largest buyers, his purchases amounting to $3000, and I have preserved the record of the previous ownership of the pieces from this collection, by referring to this source in the present Catalogue. I can supply a few copies of the Wilson Sale Catalogue with price list at and with plates at the latter illustrating many additional coins of the Zug Sale. The Wilson Collection contained 600 pieces of U. S. Gold, and is the largest sale of the series ever held. He had not added much to the Silver Series during recent years, but it contains both varieties of the very rare 1796 Half Dollar in good condition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalog of the Magnificent Collection of the Gold, Silver and Copper Coins of the United States: Formed by the Late David S. Wilson, Esq., Pittsburgh The Gold Dollar series is the most complete in specimens from all Mints ever placed on sale, and includes a Dahlonega 1861, of which only four are known. It is needless to recapitulate the great number of rarities here, which will be found in due order in the catalog. I would particularly call the attention of the collectors to the Splendid series of gold proof sets, which, as sets, are exceedingly rare, and should be, and I believe will be, more highly appreciated in the future. The grandest coin that our country strikes to-day is the twenty-dollar piece, and that is at least as important as any other denomination, and no great collection can claim to fully represent the coins of the United States without contain ing all the denominations. The consideration of face value may be disregarded when we recollect that a collection of cents in the finest condition will easily average fifty dollars a piece. Book excerpt: From the foreword: "It has been a great comfort over the years to know that Alan Craig was always able and willing to guide the growth of the Florida Collection and provide sound numismatic counsel. His knowledge of the collection is based on years of experience and personal examination of each and every coin. It is a pleasure to be able to present once again a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the Florida Collection of Gold Coins."--James J. Miller, state archaeologist and chief, Bureau of Archaeological Research Dazzling numismatic treasures await readers of this new volume that catalogues and characterizes the splendors of the Florida Collection of Spanish Coins. An updated version of the author's earlier publication, Gold Coins of the 1715 Spanish Fleet (now out of print), it includes more than 100 new additions to the collection. The publication of Spanish Colonial Gold Coins in the Florida Collection (alongside its recently released companion, Spanish Colonial Silver Coins in the Florida Collection) makes available Florida's magnificent collection of Spanish coins in richly detailed photographs accompanied by vivid descriptions. Presented in accordance with current numismatic standards of description, analysis, and publication, Alan Craig's account of the coins goes far beyond ordinary standards to bring alive the history of the coins' production, transport, and loss at sea. The perfect guide to this treasure-house, Craig's book conveys the importance and fascination of the largest known collection of Spanish colonial shipwreck coins in the world. For collectors, scholars, and everyone else who has ever been fascinated by Spanish treasure fleets, this book offers countless hours of enjoyment and information. Alan K. Craig is professor emeritus of geography and geology at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and coeditor of In Quest of Mineral Wealth. He is also the author of a companion volume, Spanish Colonial Silver Coins in the Florida Collection.
