Book excerpt: Much of the exotic dress of the armies of Europe has its origins in the conditions of frontier wars fought by imperial armies and in the employment of "Hinterland warriors" by imperial governments. This study charts how perceptions of these marginalized peoples influenced and ultimately transformed the history of military dress. Discussion encompasses Hussars of the eastern frontier, North African Mameluks and Zouaves, and the North American frontier experience. Includes bandw historical illustrations and a few photos. Abler is affiliated with the University of Waterloo, Canada. c. Book News Inc.

Book Synopsis Spanish Army of the Napoleonic Wars (1) by : René Chartrand
Download or read book Spanish Army of the Napoleonic Wars (1) written by René Chartrand and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 1998-11-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Army was transformed during the 18th century by an influx of progressive officers who modernised and expanded it. It was closely modelled on the French armies of Louis XIV and Louis XV in tactical doctrine, organisation, armament and uniforms. In battle, they were often brave to the point of carelessness, and were thus sometimes difficult to control. The army also had several Swiss and Walloon regiments, less given to all-out attacks, but renowned for their steadiness under fire. In this first of three volumes, Réne Chartrand examines the organisation and uniforms of the Spanish Army of the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815).
Book Synopsis Napoleon's Line Infantry by : Philip Haythornthwaite
Download or read book Napoleon's Line Infantry written by Philip Haythornthwaite and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon's line infantry was founded upon that of the Ancien Régime. A total re-organisation began on 1 January 1791 with the abolition of the old regimental titles, and over the next two years an increasing number of conscript and volunteer battalions were formed. Their quality varied from the proficiency of the early National Guard regiments to the untrained and ill-equipped rabble of the levée. To combine the discipline and steadiness of the regular army with the revolutionary fervour of the new army, the Amalgame was decreed on 21 February; by this measure each regular battalion became the nucleus of a new Demi-Brigade.
