Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tyler Roberts encourages scholars to abandon rigid conceptual oppositions between "secular" and "religious" to better understand how human beings actively and thoughtfully engage with their worlds and make meaning. The artificial distinction between a self-conscious and critical "academic study of religion" and an ideological and authoritarian "religion," he argues, only obscures the phenomenon. Instead, Roberts calls on intellectuals to approach the field as a site of "encounter" and "response," illuminating the agency, creativity, and critical awareness of religious actors. To respond to religion is to ask what religious behaviors and representations mean to us in our individual worlds, and scholars must confront questions of possibility and becoming that arise from testing their beliefs, imperatives, and practices. Roberts refers to the work of Hent de Vries, Eric Santner, and Stanley Cavell, each of whom exemplifies encounter and response in their writings as they traverse philosophy and religion to expose secular thinking to religious thought and practice. This approach highlights the resources religious discourse can offer to a fundamental reorientation of critical thought. In humanistic criticism after secularism, the lines separating the creative, the pious, and the critical themselves become the subject of question and experimentation.

Book excerpt: The diversity of the world's religions has come to the West, but believers are often ill-equipped for any kind of serious engagement with non-Christians. In Encountering World Religions, professor and author Irving Hexham introduces all the world's major religious traditions in a brief and understandable way. Hexham outlines key beliefs and practices in each religion, while also providing guidance on how to think critically about them from the standpoint of Christian theology. African, yogic, and Abrahamic traditions are all covered. Accessible and clear, Encountering World Religions will provide formal and lay students alike with a useful Christian introduction to the major faiths of our world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceived as a magnificent display of the major religions of the world, the 1893 Parliament sought to unite "all religion against irreligion." A singular moment in the creation of a more pluralistic religious culture in America, it introduced many Americans to Eastern religions and meditative practices such as yoga. Some in the Christian community saw the gathering as a sign of the approaching fulfillment of the missionary's hope to evangelize the world, while others saw a divided Christendom under threat from the religions of the East. Richard Hughes Seager explores this fascinating event in all its complexities and, in a new preface, summarizes recent research and reflects on religious pluralism in an age of religious extremism.

Book excerpt: Christians need to be aware of the differences between Christianity and other world religions. We need tolerance and understanding as we dialogue with others about our faith. Many wonder whether this is still possible in today's world, so Passport of Faith records how one man has done it. Nachtigall visits ten countries to see how different religions have shaped their national identity, culture, and history and shares his experience of trying to tell people in these cultures about his faith in Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of Paul Tillich for understanding not only Christian faith but all religious systems is still being realized. Tillich is widely recognized as the theologian of the modern age--or, as many would have it, the postmodern age. For a new age of preoccupation with interreligious encounters--wherein tolerance may be the watchword but the quest for truth and faith maintains--Robison James reintroduces Tillich as an effective pedagogue for dealing with such encounters and for discovering, in the clamor of so many noisy, insistent religious systems, a voice of truth. James has reread Tillich with the specific purpose of discovering how we may deal with the many kinds of interreligious encounters that have been growing in frequency and importance. Such encounters, James points out, range from reading about "another religion" to "visiting" the other's observances, to dialogue with its members, to simply puzzling over how "my" faith (or nonfaith) relates to this or that "religion." Tillich's lifelong existential encounter with religious systems and his perceptive appraisal of those systems, James concludes, can lead us to the best attitude for our own quest for a way of faith and life among so many "ways" clamoring for our attention. Tillich's theology, James suggests, may best be understood as a synthesis of dialectics and paradox. Further--James contends--the attitude most characteristic of Tillich's thought, "reciprocal inclusivism, " is to be recommended as the best attitude for our own quest for the word of truth among so many noisy voices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-Five Element International Scholars show how roman catholic theology has grappled with religious pluralism. Catholic Engagement with World Religions outlines, clarifies, and defends official Roman Catholic teaching on the relationship between Christianity and other religious traditions in light of the Catholic belief that "We must hold that the Holy Spirit offers to all the possibility of being made partners, in a way known to God, in the paschal mystery".(Gaudium et Spes, 22) Part I studies the history of these issues while Part II examines their theological framing. Part III addresses Christianity and other religions since Vatican U. Part IV deals specifically with Judaism, Confucianism, Hinduism and Islam as these religions see themselves in relation to Christianity. A final chapter by Bishop Michael Fitzgerald offers a theological reflection on the foundations of interreligious dialogue today. For scholars, students, and practitioners of interreligious encounter, Catholic Engagement with World Religions is necessary and absorbing reading. Karl J. Becker, S.J., and Ilaria Morali teach at the Gregorian University in Rome.
