Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Schwarzschild—rabbi, socialist, pacifist, theologian, and philosopher—is both the last of the major medieval Jewish philosophers and the most modern. He is in the tradition of the Jewish thinking that began with Sa'adia Gaon and reached its highest expression in Maimonides. These thinkers believed that Judaism must confront some systematic view of the universe. Sa'adia did this with Kalam, ibn Gabirol with Neo-Platonism, and Maimonides with Aristotelianism. Schwarzschild does it with Neo-Kantianism. From this confrontation, Schwarzschild derives important insights into the nature and structure of contemporary Judaism and Jewish existence in the post-modern world. Menachem Kellner brings together thirteen of Schwarzschild's Jewish (as opposed to straightforwardly philosophical) writings. Included are important discussions of messianism, death of God theology, ethics, aesthetics, and politics. The common concerns underlying these essays are Neo-Kantian idealism and messianism. In an afterword written especially for this book, Schwarzschild shows that these two foci are really one. In an introductory essay, Menachem Kellner explores the philosophic underpinning of Schwarzschild's non-Marxist socialism, pacifism, and messianism; and of his critiques of Christianity, political conservatism, and Zionism.

Book Synopsis Nazis, Islamic Antisemitism and the Middle East by : Matthias Küntzel
Download or read book Nazis, Islamic Antisemitism and the Middle East written by Matthias Küntzel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nazis, Islamic Antisemitism and the Middle East demonstrates the impact on the Arab world of Nazi ideology and propaganda in the 1930s and beyond. In 1937, with the brochure “Islam and Judaism,” a new form of Jew-hatred came into the world: Islamic antisemitism. The Nazis did everything they could to anchor this new message of hate through their Arabic-language radio propaganda. The book sheds light on this hitherto unknown chapter of Germany’s past. It presents new archive findings that show how the image of Jews in Islam changed between 1937 and 1948 under the influence of this propaganda and other Nazi activities. This fresh look at Middle East history allows for a more precise assessment of the present: What exactly is “Islamic antisemitism”? How is it currently manifesting itself in Germany and France? What makes it particularly dangerous? Only when we understand how strongly modern Middle East history is shaped by the aftermath of National Socialism will we be able to correctly interpret the hatred of Jews in this region and its echo among Muslims in Europe and develop adequate countermeasures. This volume will be of interest to those researching antisemitism, Nazi foreign policy and the political history of the Middle East. This book is nominated for the 2023 book prize for the best book on contemporary antisemitism, awarded annually by the London Center for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism.

Book Synopsis Britain's Triumph and Decline in the Middle East by : Sir William Godfrey Fothergill Jackson
Download or read book Britain's Triumph and Decline in the Middle East written by Sir William Godfrey Fothergill Jackson and published by Potomac Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich in detail, this book gives a fascinating account of the British military campaigns in the Middle East in the Twentieth Century. After the First World War the map of the Middle East was redrawn out of the ruins of the discarded Ottoman Empire. After the defeat of Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany, the inevitable consequences of the conflicting promises the British had previously made to both the Jews and Arabs began to boil over. Arab and Jewish nationalism became unbridled and the United States entered the fray. Debilitated by the losses caused by two wars, Britain's will and capacity to rule weakened and an inevitable political and economic decline began. As the sun set on the British Empire Whitehall was forced, step by step, to surrender dominance to Washington. Britain's Triumph and Decline in the Middle East charts a century in which Britain enjoyed victory in two world wars, but suffered the collapse of the Empire and the previous world order. Now, with Britain's role in this new order in mind, William Jackson looks at the contribution of the British to the multinational force that won the Gulf War and considers Britain's future role in the Middle East.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge History of Communism by : Norman Naimark
Download or read book The Cambridge History of Communism written by Norman Naimark and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of The Cambridge History of Communism explores the rise of Communist states and movements after World War II. Leading experts analyze archival sources from formerly Communist states to re-examine the limits to Moscow's control of its satellites; the de-Stalinization of 1956; Communist reform movements; the rise and fall of the Sino-Soviet alliance; the growth of Communism in Asia, Africa and Latin America; and the effects of the Sino-Soviet split on world Communism. Chapters explore the cultures of Communism in the United States, Western Europe and China, and the conflicts engendered by nationalism and the continued need for support from Moscow. With the danger of a new Cold War developing between former and current Communist states and the West, this account of the roots, development and dissolution of the socialist bloc is essential reading.
