Download or read book Vergiliana written by Egil Kraggerud and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Vergiliana Egil Kraggerud collects together over 100 new, revised, and previously published discussions of textual issues in Vergil’s Eclogues, Georgics, and the Aeneid. Through these and in his Introduction, the author argues for a less conservative approach to these texts than has been fashionable among 20th century editors and commentators. This profoundly learned, engaging and valuable contribution is a critical resource for anyone working on the works of Vergil at both under- and postgraduate level, written by one of the most respected scholars in the field.

Book excerpt: "Virgilian studies in England were raised to a new plane with the publication of R.G. Austin's commentary on Aeneid II (1964). His Aeneid IV (1955) had given a slightly meagre foretaste of the riches to be revealed in the editions of Aeneid II, I (1971), and VI. Austin's contribution to our understanding of the Aeneid now stands comparision with Heinze's or Norden's."--Journal of Roman Studies. "Throughout, Austin's characteristic sensitivity and refined judgement combine with careful scholarship to present a balanced, sound commentary on this most difficult and crucial book of Virgil's epic poem."--Classical World.

Download or read book Virgil's Eclogues written by Virgil and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2010-03-09 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publius Vergilius Maro (70-19 B.C.), known in English as Virgil, was perhaps the single greatest poet of the Roman empire—a friend to the emperor Augustus and the beneficiary of wealthy and powerful patrons. Most famous for his epic of the founding of Rome, the Aeneid, he wrote two other collections of poems: the Georgics and the Bucolics, or Eclogues. The Eclogues were Virgil's first published poems. Ancient sources say that he spent three years composing and revising them at about the age of thirty. Though these poems begin a sequence that continues with the Georgics and culminates in the Aeneid, they are no less elegant in style or less profound in insight than the later, more extensive works. These intricate and highly polished variations on the idea of the pastoral poem, as practiced by earlier Greek poets, mix political, social, historical, artistic, and moral commentary in musical Latin that exerted a profound influence on subsequent Western poetry. Poet Len Krisak's vibrant metric translation captures the music of Virgil's richly textured verse by employing rhyme and other sonic devices. The result is English poetry rather than translated prose. Presenting the English on facing pages with the original Latin, Virgil's Eclogues also features an introduction by scholar Gregson Davis that situates the epic in the time in which it was created.
Download or read book Virgil in English written by Virgil and published by Penguin Classics. This book was released on 1996 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For T. S. Eliot, Virgil was not merely one of the great masters but 'our classic, the classic of all Europe'. Perhaps no other writer has generated a longer and larger tradition of commentary, translation and imitation." "From Chaucer to W. H. Auden and Robert Lowell, Virgil is a defining presence in English poetry. The Eclogues and Georgics inspired the pastorals of Spenser, Milton and Pope; the Aeneid's pathos, spiritual insights and long-suffering hero - who struggles with doubt, despair and the loss of everything he loves to found the Roman race - made it the model epic. Dryden's complete Virgil in heroic couplets sums up the supersedes his predecessors, yet later translators include Wordsworth, William Morris, Robert Bridges and Cecil Day Lewis. This selection consists largely of extracts from straight translations, along with a number of pieces illustrating Virgil's influence; celebrated episodes like the death of Dido and Aeneas's descent into the underworld appear in several different versions."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
