Book excerpt: From the Abstract: This paper examines the incidence and sustainability of two types of workplace innovation: employee participation programs and incentive pay systems. The analysis is based on the Working With Technology Survey ... The results show that the incidence of both employee participation programs and incentive pay systems rose, although not dramatically, between 1985 and 1991. Large establishments and those under foreign control were most likely to introduce these types of programs. The presence of a union was associated with a higher probability of reporting an employee participation program but a lower probability of reporting an incentive pay plan. There was also a high degree of association at the establishment level between the two types of organizational innovation examined and between each of them and technological innovation. An important issue cocerns the sustainability of workplace innovations such as employee participation and incentive-based pay systems ... The data suggest that these innovations have a substantial failure rate.

This paper examines & summarizes recently published material on how & why these workplace innovations came about in Quebec, the impact they had on the provincial economy, and the lessons for the rest of Canada. It also includes an examination of labour & management attitudes & motivations toward innovative practices and the reconciliation efforts required by both sides. Case studies are provided with summaries of the external factors that led to the decision to innovate, the nature of the innovations, the implementation process, and the innovation outcomes. Finally, the key characteristics of innovative workplace experiences are synthesized.

Book excerpt: What do innovation and immigration have in common? Just about everything. Not only do immigrants contribute to Canada's overall innovation performance, but in turn, simple innovations can help solve complex labour market integration challenges for firms, governments, communities, and educators. So what can Canadian organizations do to better integrate immigrants into the labour market and take advantage of their skills and innovative ideas? Join us for this 60-minute webinar to hear about how you can benefit from and contribute to such innovations. You will hear from Citizenship and Immigration Canada's (CIC) Policy Innovation Division (PiD), whose work centers on collaboration with diverse sets of organizations. The PiD focuses on rapid testing (or prototyping) of new interventions that improve economic and social outcomes for newcomers. There will be time to engage through Q&A on how your organization can also partner and innovate in simple ways to address challenges of integrating immigrants into the labour market, enhancing your organization's performance. Participants will also hear from 1st place and fan-favourite winner of Canada's largest-ever hackathon. Drawing from their own experience as innovators, brothers Carlos and Robert Saavedra will introduce an app they are developing. The app, Imminy, designs paths for prospective and new immigrants, helping address long-term challenges faced by policy makers and communities.

To be competitive, companies and their leaders continuously strive to engage in new market spaces by developing and engaging in an innovative culture so as to differentiate themselves from their rivals. With contributions from scholars and practitioners, this Handbook provides evidence-based case studies to identify workplace innovation practices in developed and developing countries. Chapters are based on an organizational innovation framework and focuses on two major areas: the determinants of innovation and the process and outcome elements. It covers in-depth, cutting edge specialised topics such as frugal innovation, innovation associated with leadership as well as numerous organisational contexts such as for-profit and not for profit sectors and small, medium and large organisations. Essential reading for any student or scholar of innovation studies, this handbook provides novel coverage of innovation practices linked to organizational variables such as culture, ethics, leadership and performance.
