Book Synopsis International Trade in Services by : Olivier Cattaneo
Download or read book International Trade in Services written by Olivier Cattaneo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The services sector is key to economic growth, competitiveness, and poverty alleviation. Comprising more than two-thirds of the world economy, services are now commonly traded across borders, helped by technological progress and the increased mobility of persons. In recent years, a number of developing countries have looked at trade in services as a means to both respond to domestic supply shortages and to diversify and boost exports. Any country can tap into the trade potential of services, but not every country can become a services hub across sectors. The opening of the services sector potentially comes with large benefits, but also fears and costs that should not be overlooked. This book provides useful guidelines for the assessment of a country s trade potential, and a roadmap for successful opening and export promotion in select services sectors. It looks at both the effects of increased imports and exports, and provides concrete examples of developing country approaches that have either succeeded or failed to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of opening. It focuses on sectors that have been rarely analyzed through the trade lens, and/or have a fast growing trade potential for developing countries. These sectors are: accounting, construction, distribution, engineering, environmental, health, information technology, and legal services. This book is designed for non-trade specialists to understand how trade can help improve access to key services in developing countries, and for trade specialists to understand the specific characteristics of each individual sector. It will be a useful tool for governments to design successful trade opening or promotion strategies, and for the private sector and consumers to advocate sound domestic policy reforms accompanying an offensive trade agenda.

Book Synopsis Special Report: Peru Bicentenary by :
Download or read book Special Report: Peru Bicentenary written by and published by The Business Year. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2021, Peru celebrates 200 years of independence. Since then, the country has emerged as a regional economic force, having experienced annual growth rates above 5% from 2002 to 2013. From 2014 to 2019, growth slowed to around 3% per year, a result of low international commodities prices. Peru, however, was well equipped to manage what could otherwise have been described as a crisis, thanks to some nimble fiscal maneuvering. That was coupled with the coming online of new mining projects, which saw the current account deficit slashed to just 1.5% in 2019. It is our hope that this 45-page special report form both an important snapshot of the Peruvian economy, as well as a looking glass to the near future, beyond COVID-19, when the country once again hopes to shine.

Book Synopsis Contractors and War by : Christopher Kinsey
Download or read book Contractors and War written by Christopher Kinsey and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military is no longer based on a Cold War self-sufficient model. Today's armed forces are a third smaller than they were during the Cold War, and yet are expected to do as much if not more than they did during those years. As a result, a transformation is occurring in the way the U.S. government expects the military to conduct operations—with much of that transformation contingent on the use of contractors to deliver support to the armed forces during military campaigns and afterwards. Contractors and War explains the reasons behind this transformation and evaluates how the private sector will shape and be shaped by future operations. The authors are drawn from a range of policy, legislative, military, legal, and academic backgrounds. They lay out the philosophical arguments supporting the use of contractors in combat and stabilization operations and present a spectrum of arguments that support and criticize emergent private sector roles. The book provides fresh policy guidance to those who will research, direct, and carry out future deployments.
