Even if you're not a top performing student, this book will help guide you toward college graduation and personal success by offering alternative ways of looking at and dealing with questions most asked by students today including: What college should I attend? This book is a "we need to read this together" moment for parents and students thats quickly becoming recommended reading for every college student. Dr. Bryant draws upon over twenty years of experience as a university vice president and professional consultant (http://www.manageenrollment.com) to provide no-nonsense, clear advice on how to pick the right university and program of study -- and then how not only to survive college, but to succeed and thrive! Book excerpt: Having a part-time job is a necessary part of everyday college life for many college students. It is possible that holding an on-campus part-time job can have a positive effect on student retention, especially for racially minoritized students. This research investigates if there is a correlation between persistence to graduation and on campus part-time employment for racially minoritized (RM) students. In order to conduct this research, an on-line survey was used to gather qualitative data from a random sampling of two-thousand full-time, undergraduate students from a small, rural state university in Northern California. Students who took the survey reported on employment status, how their on- or off-campus job affected their sense of community, self-reliance, and sense of self. Additionally, in order to gain a better understanding of current academic advising practices in regards to assisting students in balancing education and employment, four professional academic advisors were interviewed on their approach to advising students regarding working while in college. They asked what benefits, if any, they have seen students derive from working on-campus, and under what conditions an advisor might suggest to a student that they refrain from working. This information regarding how on-campus, part-time jobs might affect retention could assist advisors and campus iii policymakers in the effort to increase retention rates among racially minoritized students at 4-year universities.

Book excerpt: Taking an active stand in today's conservative educational climate can be a risky business. Given both the expectations of the profession and the challenge of participation in social justice activism, how do educator activists manage the often competing demands of professional and activist commitments? Activist Educators offers a view into the big picture of assertive idealistic professionals’ lives by presenting rich qualitative data on the impetus behind educators’ activism and the strategies they used to push limits in fighting for a cause. Chapters follow the stories of educator activists as they take on problems in schools, including sexual harassment, sexism, racism, reproductive rights, and GLBT rights. The research in Activist Educators contributes to an understanding of professional and personal motivations for educators’ activism, ultimately offering a significant contribution to aspiring teachers who need to know that education careers and social justice activist causes need not be mutually exclusive pursuits.
