Some important challenges and trends of environmental friendly operations in maritime logistics are outlined. The general trends entail, among others, the reduction of CO2/SOx/NOx, the design of more ecological shipping vessels, protect and enhance human health, recycle, re-use and remanufacture etc. A sustainable supply chain donate sustainable development by simultaneously delivering economic, social and environmental benefits – or what has been termed “ the triple bottom line”. A large number of firms have reconfigured their sustainable supply chains to enhance end-customer value and competitive advantage. Implications caused by maritime sector or shipping companies are discussed and illustrated by some examples. A framework of “A.P. Moeller-Maersk environmental strategies” gives a brief insight into those evolutionary logistics operations which propose to reduce the impact of logistical activities. These are new technologies, new policies, new practices and environmental management system.

This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emission of greenhouse gases from shipping is a serious problem for international climate change policy and they cannot be allowed to grow uncontrolled. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has estimated that international shipping was responsible for annual emissions of around 843 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (MtCO2) in 2007, or around 3 per cent of total man-made carbon emissions. This report follows up an earlier inquiry (Reducing carbon emissions from transport, HC 981-I, 9th report of session 2005-06, ISBN 9780215030412)and examines what efforts the Government is making in three main respects: (a) negotiations to tackle shipping emissions at an international level (within the IMO, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the EU); (b) measures by which the UK is to take into account its share of international shipping emissions in domestic carbon budgets (through the Climate Change Act 2008); and (c) support in the UK for operational improvements and technological R&D aimed at reducing emissions from shipping. Very little progress has been made at the international level. A lack of urgency shown by industrialised nations and blocking actions by developing economies share the blame. The Government admits that the current calculation of the UK's share of international shipping emissions is an underestimate and should consult on how to improve the methodology it uses to calculate the UK's share of international shipping emissions. Government support for research and development should focus on technologies that can be retrofitted to existing ships, and offer a genuine alternative to fossil fuels, such as hydrogen fuel cells. There should be drastic acceleration of R&D into low- and zero-carbon propulsion systems.

Book excerpt: Climate Change and the Oceans investigates the effects of climate change on the ocean environment and its implications for maritime activities, both globally and within the Asia Pacific region. This detailed work draws together informed opinion from a range of disciplines to examine the impacts of climate change on marine and coastal areas and review legal and policy responses to the rapidly changing ocean environment. Issues including the effects on fisheries and marine biodiversity in the Asia Pacific region, maritime security, global shipping, marine jurisdiction and marine geo-engineering are also explored. Examining the multiple impacts of climate change on the oceans and ocean based solutions to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change, this thought-provoking book will prove invaluable to academics, researchers and students in the fields of law, environment, ecology and political science. Oceans and marine environmental policymakers will also find this to be an essential resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities are no longer just places to live in. They are significant actors on the global stage, and nowhere is this trend more prominent than in the world of transnational climate change governance (TCCG). Through transnational networks that form links between cities, states, international organizations, corporations, and civil society, cities are developing and implementing norms, practices, and voluntary standards across national boundaries. In introducing cities as transnational lawmakers, Jolene Lin provides an exciting new perspective on climate change law and policy, offering novel insights about the reconfiguration of the state and the nature of international lawmaking as the involvement of cities in TCCG blurs the public/private divide and the traditional strictures of 'domestic' versus 'international'. This illuminating book should be read by anyone interested in understanding how cities - in many cases, more than the countries in which they're located - are addressing the causes and consequences of climate change.
