Book excerpt: "Be a person of initiative and beware, lest through hindrances of your own body or hindrances that otherwise come in your way, you do not find the center of your being, within which lies the source of your initiative. Observe that, in your life, all joy and sorrow, all happiness and pain, will depend on finding or not finding your own individual initiative. This should appear, as if written in golden letters, constantly before the soul of anthroposophists. Initiative lies in their karma, and much of what meets them in this life will depend on the extent to which they can become willingly, actively conscious of it." --Rudolf Steiner, Aug. 4, 1924 Torin Finser takes on some of our contemporary challenges and proposes new solutions. Rather than simply "kicking the can down the road," as often happens with issues such as sovereign debts, Middle East conflicts, and environmental issues, Finser calls for individual initiative. Drawing on a variety of rich cultural and spiritual traditions, he makes the case for social change that begins within. To do so, one must first access resources that support initiative and innovation. Key questions discussed in this book include: How is it possible to live a spiritual life in our materialistic age? Can an individual person still make a difference? How can we use a whole-systems approach to innovation? How can planetary wisdom help us find appropriate leadership styles? What are the inner conditions needed to work with the transcendent Self? In the swirl of multi-tasking, how can we find moments of solitude and reflection? We need new, a ethical individualism that is fully transformative. As quoted from the Peace Pilgrim in chapter 2: This is the way of peace--overcome evil with good, and falsehood with truth, and hatred with love. Today's world needs people of initiative--those willing to become the change that is so desperately needed. This book offers a wakeup call for inspired leadership.

Book excerpt: Rudolf Steiner's four mystery dramas are powerful portrayals of the complex laws of reincarnation and karma. They transport us into a landscape of the human soul and spirit, where suprasensory beings are active. Through the perception of these hidden worlds, we are given the opportunity to understand the struggles we face in attempting to apply spiritual knowledge to our everyday lives and relationships. Written between 1910 and 1913 during periods of intense inner and outer work, these dramas are powerful testimonies to Steiner's artistic creativity. By manifesting soul and spirit forms on a stage, they foreshadow a dramatic art for the future. The complete cycle of four plays is reproduced here in the classic translation by Ruth and Hans Pusch. The Four Plays: The Portal of Initiation: A Rosicrucian Mystery, through Rudolf Steiner The Soul's Probation: A Life Tableau in Dramatic Scenes As Sequel to the Portal of Initiation, through Rudolf Steiner The Guardian of the Threshold: Soul Events in Dramatic Scenes, by Rudolf Steiner The Souls' Awakening: Soul and Spirit Events in Dramatic Scenes, by Rudolf Steiner This volume is a translation of Vier Mysteriendramen (vol. 14 of Rudolf Steiner's Complete Works).

Book excerpt: Rudolf Steiner wrote four mystery dramas intended to portray the spiritual path of self-knowledge as described by spiritual science, or Anthroposophy. Those plays are not merely symbolic but realistic depictions in a spiritual sense. In this book, Steiner describes how "The Portal of Initiation" (the first of his dramas) portrays the intense and tempestuous inner events of initiation as experienced by a young painter. He explains the spiritual background of this character's "karmic" tests and higher guidance. He also discusses the Rosicrucian nature of this play, as well as the "symbolism and fantasy" of the second drama, "The Soul's Probation." Steiner also emphasizes the power of certain fairy tales and poetry for bridging the gap between the spiritual and material worlds. As one of the mystery dramas shows, this is especially valuable for those who tend to be intellectuals. Rudolf Steiner portrayed much of the wisdom of his spiritual science in the mystery dramas and intended them to graphically depict what he taught all his life. As he said, "If people will exert themselves...to work with the drama, I will not have to give any more lectures for a long time." Book excerpt: The Doorway of Initiation – The Trial of the Soul – The Guardian of the Threshold – The Souls Awaken Rudolf Steiner's four modern mystery dramas are powerful portrayals of the complex laws of reincarnation and karma, transporting us to landscapes of soul and spirit where supra-sensory beings are visible, active and influential. Through perception of these hidden worlds, we are given tools to comprehend the background to the struggles we face in everyday life – both in human relationships and in our attempts to practise spiritual development. Written between the years 1910 and 1913, during periods of intense inner and outer work, the dramas are powerful testimonies to Steiner's artistic creativity. By manifesting soul and spirit forms on stage, they foreshadow a dramatic art of the future. Rudolf Steiner planned for all four mystery dramas to be performed in August 1923, but this was no longer possible because of the burning of the first Goetheanum on New Year's Eve, 1922. They were eventually performed together for the first time in 1930 and since then have been staged regularly, in many languages, throughout the world. This fresh rendering into English by Richard Ramsbotham also features an extensive introduction by him. >GA 14

Book excerpt: The four Mystery Dramas were created, produced and printed one each year, one after the other, from 1910-1913. They took place in different theatres in Munich but always in the month of August. The writing of the dramas, the creating of the scenery, the making of the costumes, the learning of roles, the general directing, the organization of the printing and all the other inummerable things connected with such a major production happened within a matter of weeks before the main performance. There was a literal whirlwind of activity, and it is reported that often the scenes were written during the night before a scheduled rehearsal, and that at five or six in the morning a boy would come from the press to pick up the manuscript for the printing of the scene for that day's rehearsal. All this activity centered around Rudolf Steiner who gave directions or advice on every aspect of the production down to the smallest details. He not only wrote the dramas themselves, but also indicated how such soul and spiritual pictures could be presented and played on stage. A fifth drama was also planned, which was to include scenes from Ancient Greece and its mystery centers, but the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 meant that it had to be postponed. Rudolf Steiner's early death in 1925 resulted in it never coming to production, nor ever being written down.

Book excerpt: Rudolf Steiner said of his mystery dramas--written between 1910 and 1913--that they contain the whole essence of Anthroposophy and that if, through some unlikely chance, only these dramas were to survive, the essential content of Anthroposophy would nevertheless be preserved. Steiner's dramas powerfully portray the complex processes of reincarnation and karma. In them, we are led to inhabit the living landscape of the human soul and spirit, where suprasensory beings weave destinies. Here we find a connection with the spiritual reality of human life itself by following the dramatic interplay of the joy and sorrow, struggle and striving of a group of individuals attempting to apply spiritual knowledge to their practical lives and relationships. To read, watch, or act in these plays is an initiation experience. In The Souls' Awakening--Steiner's fourth mystery drama--an enlightened entrepreneur appoints a scientist, a historian, and an artist to use their spiritual perceptions to transform his business into one that serves spiritual as well as practical needs. A long-standing colleague objects, and a series of conflicts and crises develops. As the plot unfolds, we follow the characters on a journey that moves from business meetings through various states of consciousness, into worlds known before birth and previous lives in Egypt. This classic translation by Ruth and Hans Pusch was revised for this volume by Ruth Pusch. Included is Hans Pusch's "Thoughts on the Seal," in which he discusses the Rosicrucian meaning of the seal represented on the cover. This book is a translation of "Der Seelen Erwachen," published as part four of Vier Mysteriendramen The Four Mystery Dramas), which includes "The Portal of Initiation"; "The Soul's Probation"; "The Guardian of the Threshold"; and "The Souls' Awakening."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosopher and educationalist Rudolf Steiner was also a radical dramatist who wrote four lengthy and complex plays. The first of these, The Portal of Initiation, is rich in content and artistically presented, but leaves us with questions: Why is the first scene so long and many speeches so lengthy? Why are our usual expectations of drama not met? Was Steiner really a competent dramatist? In this essential guide, Trevor Dance suggests that the first step to appreciating The Portal of Initiation is to understand Steiner's methods. The play belongs to the tradition of Mystery Dramas from ancient times – artistic works intended as vehicles for inner development. Steiner thus combines aspects of Goethe's alchemical fable The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily with the spiritual growth of contemporary individuals – all in the broader context of reincarnation and karma. With accessibility in mind, the author provides a clear synopsis of each scene and introduces us to the characters – a collection of rustics, sophisticates, hierophants and spiritual entities. Their dilemmas and challenges take place on many layers of reality: from a room in Sophia's house to the exalted Sun Temple. Revealing the enigmas behind the creation and content of The Portal of Initiation, Dance enables us not only to enjoy the play, but also to love it. His lucid guide – the first of its kind – is an ideal introduction for both individual readers and study groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the hundredth anniversary of Rudolf Steiner's first mystery drama in 2010, there has been a revival of interest in the English-speaking world. There have been several productions in North America and England, and new mystery dramas have been written, imagining possible sequels to Steiner's dramas. This volume contains two new translations of the third and fourth mystery dramas, created especially for new productions in the UK. The Guardian of the Thresholdwas translated into blank verse (in which Steiner wrote all his dramas) and The Souls Awakeninto free verse. Although Steiner's four mystery dramas all build on one another, The Guardian of the Thresholdand The Souls Awaken--set more than a decade after the events of the first two plays--may also be seen as bringing a new beginning after the first two dramas. An introduction by Richard Ramsbotham explores some of the questions surrounding the third and fourth of Steiner's mystery dramas, including their relationship to events in the anthroposophic movement during 1923 and 1924. The introduction also discusses the increasing significance of the mystery dramas today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About seven years have passed since the end of the first drama, ten since the beginning of it. All the main characters are to be thought of as having started or continued a serious study of the spiritual science expounded by Benedictus. Thus, they all must have seen as significantly matured in their spiritual understanding. Both Capesius and Strader have entered onto the path of initiation, but in very different ways. Capesius, through his slow steady studying and research, has achieved direct experience of spiritual beings, but in an uncontrolled and at first frightening manner. Strader has not achieved this, but he has experienced tremendous inner transformations of his soul which are clearing away hindrances and preparing him for future stages of development. Maria has been forced to realize that her relationship to Johannes must change if his soul forces are to develop correctly, however Johannes also finds this change difficult, even unacceptable. At this point, through a 'chance' meeting of Johannes and Capesius, both Johannes and Capesius 'accidentally' have a direct experience of the inner nature of the soul. Johannes experiences two sides of himself, which shocks him severely, and Capesius experiences Johannes experiencing this. The result is that, through spiritual vision, both are thrown unexpectedly back into their last incarnation in the Fourteenth Century. In that ancient time, Capesius was a Templar Knight and Strader was a Jewish doctor associated with the Templars; opposed to them was Maria as a Christian monk, with Johannes, as the Master Miner, her student. It comes out that Capesius was actually the father of Thomas(Johannes) and his lost sister Cecillia (Theodora), who he had abandoned earlier, but eventually wishes to become reconciled with. Theodora and Thomasius are engaged to be married, but find out at the last moment that they are brother and sister. Thus, Capesius, Theodora, and Maria all find themselves in a struggle around Johannes's soul, which is being pulled in different directions by different loyalties. This is all taking place at the same time the peasants and the Knights Templar are experiencing dramatic changes in their lives and the imminent fall of the Knights' castle. After the retrospective, Capesius can live through the spiritual transformation which led him into his past life quite consciously; but in doing so, he also comes face to face with the guilt remaining from his deeds then and the need to atone for them now, which he has not the strength to face. Maria, for her part, can experience the temptation which she fell for in that earlier life and through her remembrance of it, is able to overcome it in this life and thus face the necessary consequences. Johannes is shocked by the retrospective and is not able yet to deal with the consequences of what arose for him on the basis of his past life. He therefore is led into fantasy-full delusion and a state of self-placation. The final result of the drama, is that Maria alone is able to really step into the next stage of initiation. Through the power of her spiritual understanding of the situation and her love for the other participants in her 'knot of destiny' she will have to bring the support necessary if the others are to progress past their weakness and confusion

Rudolf Steiner's early death in 1925 resulted in it never coming to production, nor ever being written down. The Third Mystery Drama The Third Mystery Drama brings the First and Second to a conclusion in certain respects, and the original viewers saw them as a trilogy. The first steps into an actual seeing of one's Karma were presented in the Second Drama, and now the integration of what was seen has to be brought about. For indeed, seeing into the spiritual world is not like seeing a landscape – where it is clearly before one's eyes; rather it is more like seeing into a microscope or space telescope, totally new things appear which one does not know how to categorize or in the case of the spiritual world, to find a relation to. Not only outer visible aspects have to be integrated though, also new feelings, but especially new moral attitudes have to be integrated. This is often difficult. We, as personalities, are imbedded in the thoughts and feelings and experiences we have had; if we were suddenly confronted with some of these that are ours but that we have never had in this life, it is not surprising that we would feel strange and confused. Essentially, to be 'full' human beings, we will eventually have to integrate all thoughts, feelings and experiences possible for us as human beings. This will be an actual growing of the our soul and will allow us to integrate ourselves into the spiritual world, for the spiritual world is a 'full' world. Through conscientuous hard work, Johannes has created a new book about spiritual knowledge, but just because of this, his own spiritual knowledge has grown and he can now encouter another side of himself he had not recognized previously. This knowledge now warns him what he is about to do is incorrect, so he turns away from the success he might have had giving out the book. Just this lets him then see what he really lacks in terms of spiritual insight and where this does actually lie for him. So he seeks Theodora's light. That seeking in turn, with Maria's help, brings him to the discovery of his own light. Strader experiences the powerful illuminating nature of Theodora's light directly, and it changes his whole life. But then through the loss of of that light, after something new has been established within him, it causes him to seek help Johannes, following Benedictus's guidance. This in turn brings him into a direct experience of the strongest side of his own inner nature and what he has actually developed in his previous lives and this one. Such an insight gives him at the end, his own inner self-confidence in what he has to contribute to the others, to mankind. For Capsesius, the shock of his moral failure and guilt from a past life was more than he could integrate into his present life. But the sojourn in the spiritual world also was a growing one for him, and he experienced much more there which had a bearing on his own Karma. Thus, by being able to come to Stader's help, he helps Theodora where one part of his Karmic debt lies. Then by accepting the help of Maria and becoming aware of the real nature of certain parts of himself, he actually allows her to make spiritual progress which she can use to help Johannes, where another part of his Karmic debt lies. The Karmic knot that binds these individuals together can be brought to a higher stage of development, a stage where these individuals are prepare to help each other to help themselves and humanity, and where a social work may be undertaken which will also be in harmony with the spiritual forces in the world.
