Book excerpt: Excerpt from Working Course in English for the Public Schools A well-rounded presentation of reading requires the subject to be approached from two distinct points of view. In the first, methods are used to give the children a mastery of the technique of pronounciation. In this approach the New Education System or the Ward System of Rational Reading may be taken as a basis. In as much as drill in reading based on the phonetic method is apt to develop mere formal work, unaccompanied on the part of the child by an understanding of the sense, a wholly different approach to the reading lesson must at times be made. This approach is an attempt to lead the child into the lesson by making him appeciate its thought. The child should be induced to "sense" the thought behind the words. An appeal must be made to his experience to make him realize the thought. He should be led to see vividly the scenes portrayed by the sentences. Lessons in which the words convey even by their very sounds a large part, at least, of their meaning should be chosen as often as possible for this second phase of the work. The child is to be made to see, to feel, to picture the central idea of the sentence. Having done this, he is ready to utilize the formal articulation of words, gained through the study of words phonetically, in the clear and live expression of the thought as he reads the sentence. "How to Teach Reading," by S. H. Clark (S. F. & Co.), deals at length, in chapter viii, with the expression of the central idea of the sentence. School reading naturally divides itself into three heads; first, the regular recitation work in the State Series Reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School Course in English While the plan of the work has been made as flexible as possible in order to adapt it to different schools, it has seemed desirable to indicate definitely how all of the details of the course should be organized and what methods should be used to bring about the required results. The object has been to consider the purpose of each part of the English work, and to show as specifically as possible what must be done and to some extent how it must be done to accomplish this purpose. By having a' definite aim for each year's work and by seeing clearly what is to be accomplished in each part of the subject, the teacher of English feels responsible for the successful completion of a specific part of the course. At the same time the originality and ability of the teacher need not be ham pered by a definite plan but may be exercised in adapting the work to different conditions in different schools and classes. In discussing the course in English, the general aim and methods in teaching the important elements, composition and reading, are taken up first, and then the particular phases of each subject to be presented in each year, are considered. What is presented under the general topics, reading and com position, therefore, applies to the work of each year unless otherwise stated, and usually is not repeated in considering {each year of the course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in English Grammar: A Comprehensive Course for Grammar Schools, High Schools and Academies IN the preparation of this book, the essential features of Welsh's Lessons in English Grammar have been retained. Many chapters have been rewritten, others enlarged, and the entire work has been recast and rearranged. Two points have been kept prominently in view: (1) What the boy or girl of average ability knows of the use of our language before beginning the systematic study of its facts, and the laws and usages of its structure; (2) What amount of information such an one ought to possess of our language after having studied it intelligently for the length of time usually devoted to it in the graded and ungraded schools of the country. It is, therefore, assumed that they actually know some -thing concerning the language they speak and write, and that they are capable of learning a great deal more if they have an opportunity. The sentence is the unit of thought; its elements are words, phrases, and clauses. These taken separately are pieces of sentences. When properly put together, they are the vehicles of thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Lessons in English: A Text-Book Embracing the Essentials of Practical English, for Use in Commercial Schools, High Schools, and Others Desiring a Short Course The Hundred Lessons in English are designed to meet a condition and not a theory; to aid in solving certain problems of fact as they are, rather than to speculate upon principles and questions of what ought to be. With all our modern pedagogical methods, superior instructors, and improved facilities for teaching, it is true that students ought, after from seven to nine years of study, to come from our elementary schools equipped with a knowledge of English sufficient, at least, to en able them to write a simple letter, in proper form, and with grammatical correctness; the fact is, however, as the author has observed after examining the work of hundreds of such students, that not one in fifty can write an ordinary business letter, in good form, with correct punctuation, free from numerous misspelled words, and without var-ious grammatical inaccuracies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crawford's Language Made Easy: For Schools and Teachers' Institute The average time spent by pupils in the public schools of the South does not exceed seven school years. His allotted time in the study of language would scarcely average three school years; all, or nearly all, of which time is spent in the study of language lessons and mother tongue. It is there fore, a common thing to find pupils graduating from the public school course-with practically no knowledge of the English language. The fall off in the language on the part of students, as above described, is due, largely, to an attempt at teaching literature and grammar at the same time and in the same lesson. This fruitless practice is not only Opposed by every known law of the mind, but it is a great injustice to the poor child whose time in school is limited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progressive Course in Spelling, Vol. 1 IN recent years the study of English has received more attention in high schools and colleges than ever before. In some public schools, however, there has been a tendency to neglect or slight such fundamental phases of English work as spelling and pronunciation by making them simply inci dental to other studies. As a result, business men who em ploy pupils from the grammar-school grades find many poorly equipped in spelling, and high-school instructors complain that many students, for the same cause, are not well prepared for their work. The Progressive Course in Spelling has been prepared with the hope that its use would awaken an interest in and encourage the study of words. Attention is invited to the grading and grouping of its contents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundation English the Expression of Ideas As high school teachers we have been slow to arise to the occasion. Our teaching has often been too aca demic; we have copied the college methods without examining them to see whether they were pedagogically sound as high school methods. The consequence has been that we have allowed our classes to drift along, with the burden of real preparation placed on the pupils of the upper classes. Such slipshod work as this not only has failed to prepare classes properly for college, but has left out of account those pupils who are not preparing for college, as well as those who leave school before the course is completed. We are beginning to see, how ever, that English as well as other branches of study can be taught in a definite and logical manner; that the proper time for beginning the work, whether in prepara tion for college or for the world at large, is in the first year; that, sound as college methods may be for the col lege, they may;r not be sound for the high school; that the whole of rhetoric should not be taught in the first year, or in any year, any more than the whole of algebra or the whole of Latin; that a book containing all the prin ciples of rhetoric is, at this early stage, in the highest degree confusing; and that practice under direction is essential to coherent expression. To the lessons in literature and written composition, which were the staple diet a decade ago, there must now be added persistent instruction in spell ing, punctuation, grammar, and oral composition, all duly planned and graded for the secondary school. Furthermore, every well-ordered course in English must include some provision for dra matic effort in the classroom if the work in oral expression is to be given its full value. A teacher should know what he is going to teach and how he is going to teach it before he begins his work. Scanty knowledge of a subject, and imma ture and indefinite methods Of presenting it to a class, can not yield satisfactory results. Teaching that does not lead the pupil to see clearly the important principle or fact in the lesson and its relation to principles and facts already known is mere recitation hearing - a soulless formalism. An ex planation that pupils cannot understand, on account of the teacher's scanty knowledge of the subject and the verbose and Slovenly language used, discourages pupils. To teach effectively, the teacher must know his subject, and must use clear and concise language in explanations and illustra tions. What a teacher knows only superficially he cannot clearly present to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
