Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Angeles transportation's epic scale--its iconic freeways, Union Station, Los Angeles International Airport and the giant ports of its shores--has obscured many offbeat transit stories of moxie and eccentricity. Triumphs such as the Vincent Thomas Bridge and Mac Barnes's Ground Link buspool have existed alongside such flops as the Santa Monica Freeway Diamond Lane and the Oxnard-Los Angeles Caltrain commuter rail. The City of Angels lacks a propeller-driven monorail and a freeway in the paved bed of the Los Angeles River, but not for a lack of public promoters. Horace Dobbins built the elevated California Cycleway in Pasadena, and Mike Kadletz deployed the Pink Buses for Orange County kids hitchhiking to the beach. Join Charles P. Hobbs as he recalls these and other lost episodes of LA-area transportation lore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have always traveled, but over the last century there has been an unprecedented increase in mobility. Hundreds of millions commute daily between home and work, relying more and more on cars and less on urban and intercity public transport. Faced with environmental concerns and the negative cultural and social effects of urban sprawl, governments and other agencies have attempted to reverse the decline in public transport use. In Making Public Transportation Work P.M. Bunting examines why problems have arisen and how they might be corrected. Bunting shows that transportation providers have failed to identify target customers and have not organized these services efficiently. He demonstrates that public transport providers must address organizational issues and define customer needs and preferences, arguing that customer needs can best be served by private, rather than public, carriers offering door-to-door (rather than station-to-station) transportation. In contrast, public agencies can best support public transportation by addressing not direct delivery of services but such matters as equitable safety and environmental regulation and effective, fair management of roads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several people have asked what motivated us to write a book about commut ing, something that we all do but over which we have very little control. As a matter of fact, the general reaction from professional colleagues and friends alike was first a sort of knowing smile followed by some story. Everyone has a story about a personal commuting experience. Whether it was a problem with a delayed bus, a late arrival, broken-down automobiles, hot trains or subways, during the past year we have heard it all. Many of these stories must be apocryphal because, if they were all true, it is amazing that anyone ever arrived at work on time, at home, or at some other destination. The interest for us likely stems from many factors that over the years have probably influenced our thinking. All of the authors studied and/or grew up in the New York City metropolitan area. For illustration, let's devote a few paragraphs to describing some of the senior author's (Koslowsky's) life experiences. As a young man in New York City, he was a constant user of the New York City subway system. The whole network was and still is quite impressive. For a relatively small sum, one can spend the whole day and night in an underground world (growing up in New York often makes one think that the whole world is contained in its five boroughs).

Book excerpt: This report, initially designed as a training course, is made available to those just getting involved in public transportation as well as to those who are familiar with only certain aspects of the field. This report provides a comprehensive introduction into the history, financing, planning and operations for public transportation facilities and services. A large number of topics are covered in this report which are geared to broadening the perspective of public transportation and its role during times of high energy prices, short supplies and national concerns on air pollution, redevelopment of the city centers and urban mobility for all segments of society.

Book excerpt: In terms of work transit trips, it was discovered that they tend to be taken on faster modes (such as commuter rail and elevated/subway) resulting in slightly higher in-vehicle speeds than non-work transit trips (11.8 MPH versus 11.2 MPH). The analysis also showed that those commuting via non-transit modes were 20 percent more likely to make a stop on their commute than those that took transit. Of those commuting on transit, riders were more likely to make a stop on their way home from work rather than to work. An analysis of choice and captive riders found that in the 16-24 year old age group, 85 percent of riders were choice riders. This finding could perhaps signify that more young adults are choosing to ride transit. However, this result should be interpreted with caution because of the small sample size and potential data issues with the 2009 NHTS dataset. More research should be carried out in the future to verify these results.
