Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a pioneering study of the physiology of digestion, based on the research of Ivan Pavlov, the Nobel Prize-winning Russian scientist. In a series of lectures, Pavlov presents his findings on the secretion of digestive juices by the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, and liver, and their role in the process of digestion. He also explores the reflexes and conditioning that influence the digestive system, and considers the implications of his research for medicine and psychology. Thompson's translation and notes provide a clear and accessible introduction to Pavlov's work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian physiologist and Nobel Prize winner Ivan Pavlov is most famous for his development of the concept of the conditional reflex and the classic experiment in which he trained a dog to salivate at the sound of a bell. In Pavlov's Physiology Factory: Experiment, Interpretation, Laboratory Enterprise, Daniel P. Todes explores Pavlov's early work in digestive physiology through the structures and practices of his landmark laboratory—the physiology department of the Imperial Institute for Experimental Medicine. In Lectures on the Work of the Main Digestive Glands, for which Pavlov won the Nobel Prize in 1904, the scientist frequently referred to the experiments of his coworkers and stated that his conclusions reflected "the deed of the entire laboratory." This novel claim caused the prize committee some consternation. Was he alone deserving of the prize? Examining the fascinating content of Pavlov's scientific notes and correspondence, unpublished memoirs, and laboratory publications, Pavlov's Physiology Factory explores the importance of Pavlov's directorship of what the author calls a "physiology factory" and illuminates its relationship to Pavlov's Nobel Prize-winning work and the research on conditional reflexes that followed it. Todes looks at Pavlov's performance in his various roles as laboratory manager, experimentalist, entrepreneur, and scientific visionary. He discusses changes wrought by government and commercial interests in science and sheds light on the pathways of scientific development in Russia—making clear Pavlov's personal achievements while also examining his style of laboratory management. Pavlov's Physiology Factory thus addresses issues of importance to historians of science and scientists today: "big" versus "small" science, the dynamics of experiment and interpretation, and the development of research cultures.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of the Digestive Glands IN preparing a second English edition of the work OF the digestive glands the translator (with the permission of the author) has endeavoured to bring the subject-matter up to date without materially enlarging the Scope of the work. The addi tions are chiefly culled from the results of investigations carried out along lines already indicated in the previous edition, by pupils or former pupils of the St. Petersburg Laboratory. With the exception of Lecture IV. - which is largely new and written from material supplied by Professor Pavlov - they are widely scattered throughout the book. Two new chapters (x. And XI.) on the Muscular Movements of the Alimentary Canal have also been added by the translator. It is hoped they will increase the usefulness of the work. For the sake of uniformity they have been put in lecture form. Several new illustrations have been added, and grateful acknowledgments are made to Professor Starling and to Dr. Arthur Hertz for their permission to use certain of these as well as for the loan of some of the electrotypes employed in them. One other change has been made in this edition. English equivalents of Russian proper names have been used for the most part throughout. Book excerpt: The secretions of the exocrine pancreas provide for digestion of a meal into components that are then available for processing and absorption by the intestinal epithelium. Without the exocrine pancreas, malabsorption and malnutrition result. This chapter describes the cellular participants responsible for the secretion of digestive enzymes and fluid that in combination provide a pancreatic secretion that accomplishes the digestive functions of the gland. Key cellular participants, the acinar cell and the duct cell, are responsible for digestive enzyme and fluid secretion, respectively, of the exocrine pancreas. This chapter describes the neurohumoral pathways that mediate the pancreatic response to a meal as well as details of the cellular mechanisms that are necessary for the organ responses, including protein synthesis and transport and ion transports, and the regulation of these responses by intracellular signaling systems. Examples of pancreatic diseases resulting from dysfunction in cellular mechanisms provide emphasis of the importance of the normal physiologic mechanisms.
