Book excerpt: Murderers, crazed widows, beggars, betrayed women—such are the pitiful figures who appear throughout Wordsworth's early narrative poetry. Analyzing the poet's use of pathos from the two volumes of Lyrical Ballads through the completion of The Prelude, James H. Averill argues that, for Wordsworth, the poetry of human life is inevitably the poetry of anguish and loss. Averill examines the relation of the poet to his human subjects, exploring the questions of tragic response and sentimental morality, the literary uses of human misery, and the pleasures of tragedy. In Wordsworth and the Poetry of Human Suffering, James H. Averill enriches our understanding and our appreciation of the peculiar power of Wordsworth's poetic vision.

Silent Suffering explores the depths of the human experience through an exploration of the present moment, a time in which postmodern, progressive ideas reign as the societal benchmark for goodness, justice, beauty, and--ironically--truth. This poetic critique of progressive values invites the reader to doubt progressive dogma by critiquing the foundations of the progressive approach to morality and justice. The combination of social and cultural commentary pairs with traditional elements of classical poetry to immerse readers and listeners in the experience of modern nonconformists who silently suffer in the shadows of culture's ever evolving progressive doctrinal creeds. Throughout this critique, readers and listeners are called to ponder the mystery of the human experience, the call to faith in a godless era, and the eternal need for hope amidst the senseless suffering humanity inflicts upon itself.

Book excerpt: Wordsworth's Vagrants explores the poet's treatment of the 'idle and disorderly' in the context of the penal laws of the 1790s, when the terror of the French Revolution caused a crackdown on the beggars and vagrants who roamed the English countryside. From the Salisbury Plain poems through to Lyrical Ballads, Quentin Bailey's readings are sensitive to Wordsworth's early radicalism without equating his socio-political engagement solely with support for the French Revolution.

Book excerpt: The most inclusive single-volume cloth edition of his poetry available, "Selected Poetry" represents Wordsworth's prolific output from the poems that changed the face of English poetry first published in Lyrical Ballads in 1798 to the late "Yarrow Revisited". Wordsworth's poetry is celebrated for its deep feeling, it use of ordinary speech, the love of nature it expresses, and its representation of commonplace things and events. There is no middle ground for readers of Wordsworth. There is a sharp divide between those who are deeply impassioned about his work and those for whom it is too radical and overtly romantic. Wordsworth changed the aesthetic of poetry with a seriousness of purpose and a deeper claim to "suffering and joy, in suffering not less than joy." In this new Modern Library hard cover edition edited by the imminent critic and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mark Van Doren with a new introduction by noted Romanticist David Bromwich, readers will find the most inclusive single volume of Wordsworth's poetry currently available. Spanning the years from 1787 through 1834, this is a complete and well-selected collection that represents Wordsworth's prolific creative output.

Book excerpt: First published in 1982. In this study of Wordsworth’s major poetry, the author explores the conflict between the poet’s celebration of an impersonal earth and his concern for the most intensely personal relationships. The opening chapter concentrates on Wordsworth’s struggle to describe the natural world and the extraordinary claims he makes for the natural landscape — which are shown to derive not from vague mysticism but precisely articulated common sense. The close readings of Michael, The Idiot Boy, Tintern Abbey and The Ruined Cottage, and poems as passages on solitaries are supported by generous quotations and discussion of other critical views.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Magnuson contends that the relationship between Coleridge's and Wordsworth's poetry is so complex that a new criticism is required to trace its intricacies. This book demonstrates that their poems may be read as parts of a single evolving whole, a "dialogue" in which the works of one are responses to and rewritings of those of the other. Professor Magnuson discloses this dialogue as a joint canon, or sequence, which includes the complete early versions of poems, as well as fragments, canceled drafts, and poems in progress. He further shows that this sequence is based on lyric structure: the relations among its poems and fragments resemble those among stanzas in an ode, and individual poems take their significance from their surrounding contexts in the dialogue. Coleridge's and Wordsworth's poetic conversation arose from their recognition that their themes and styles were similar. There were, as one of Coleridge's friends said, "fears of amalgamation," and it was actually from their failed attempts to collaborate on individual works that their dialogue began. The first chapter of the book elaborates a dialogic methodology and the following chapters discuss the dialogic relationship between Wordsworth's Salisbury Plain poems and "The Ancient Mariner"; "The Ruined Cottage" and Coleridge's "Christabel"; Coleridge's Conversation Poems and Wordsworth's "Tintern Abbey"; Wordsworth's Goslar poetry of 1798, "Home at Grasmere," and Lyrical Ballads (1800); and the dejection dialogue of 1802. Book excerpt: Based upon the testimony of Thomas Carlyle, most biographers acknowledge that Wordsworth witnessed the beheading of the journalist Antoine Gorsas in October 1793 during the Reign of Terror. But they go no further. This study reads the Poet’s reactions to the Terror in passages from The Prelude as explicitly about his twenty-three-year-old-self witnessing the gory deaths of Gorsas and others, which caused post-traumatic stress disorder and its symptoms, exacerbated by guilt for abandoning his French lover and their child a year earlier. Following a chronological arc from October 1793, when the trauma began, until its conclusion in October 1803, when Wordsworth became a poet-soldier, I examine poetic works from The Borderers (1796), the “Discharged Soldier’ (1798), the Two-Part Prelude (1799), Home at Grasmere (1800), and the Liberty sonnets (1803), to follow the Poet working through anxiety, fear, and remorse to a resolution.
