Gabby's world is filled with daydreams. However, what began as an escape from her parents' arguments has now taken over her life. But with the help of a new teacher, 'Gabby the dreamer' might just become 'Gabby the writer' and the words that once carried her away might allow her to soar. Written in vivid, accessible poems, this remarkable verse novel is a celebration of imagination, of friendship, of one girl's indomitable spirit, and of a teacher's ability to reach out and change a life. Garvey's father has always wanted Garvey to be athletic, but Garvey is interested in astronomy, science fiction, reading—anything but sports. Feeling like a failure, he comforts himself with food. Garvey is kind, funny, smart, a loyal friend, and he is also overweight, teased by bullies, and lonely. When his only friend encourages him to join the school chorus, Garvey's life changes. The chorus finds a new soloist in Garvey, and through chorus, Garvey finds a way to accept himself, and a way to finally reach his distant father—by speaking the language of music instead of the language of sports.

Book excerpt: A Kirkus Reviews Best Book An NCTE Notable Poetry Book Fourteen poems compiled by award-winning poet and anthologist Lee Bennett Hopkins introduce readers to the various construction people who collaborate to create a high-rise hotel building, from architect to crane operator to glaziers and more. How does an empty lot transform into a new hotel? This anthology begins with a busy construction site, and an architect's (and her daughter's) dreams drawn on blueprint paper. Next, workers with huge machines--backhoes, dump trucks, cement mixers, etc.--roll in. Poems full of noise and action describe every step of the construction process. From welders and carpenters building the skeleton of the building to plumbers and electricians making its insides work, this book celebrates people and equipment working together to build something magnificent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The powerful poems in this poignant collection weave together multiple voices to tell the story of the March on Washington, DC, in 1963. From the woman singing through a terrifying bus ride to DC, to the teenager who came partly because his father told him, "Don't you dare go to that march," to the young child riding above the crowd on her father's shoulders, each voice brings a unique perspective to this tale. As the characters tell their personal stories of this historic day, their chorus plunges readers into the experience of being at the march—walking shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers, hearing Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous speech, heading home inspired.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Word Songs and Whimsies is like taking a ride on a magical tandem bicycle: the author pedals and steers, and the reader travels behind, viewing the sights selected by the author. Your tour brings you to the violent ward of a mental hospital in the 1950s and (sixty years later) to a farmer with a rebellious billy goat. Along the way you examine flowers, clouds, and trees--and you pause to consider the songs of the tree toad and the cricket. You speed past pictures of the sins of youth, and you stop to examine portraits of old age, framed with fear and faith. Ragged, struggling, and saintly people appear as you push along, and at intervals you have time for rest and reassurance as you pause before wayside shrines depicting the love of Jesus. Sometimes a scene is touched with humor or pathos--or even with a pinch of irony; and sometimes a misty picture wants a second look. Always the motion of the verse and the sounds of the poetry help to make your journey smooth.

Book excerpt: Knowing but not caring about the flaws in the script. Feeling gripped by the crowd. Laughing out loud at the corn, the actor winking, looking forlorn, mugging while seeming sad. And I, one of the crowd, watching myself being glad. Poetry can serve as a time-out from today’s frenetic existence and be a balm for the soul. In a collection of poems, stories, and song lyrics penned over a lifetime, Paul Selbst shares expressive insight into his journey through a myriad of diverse experiences. From youthful passion and exuberance to mature reflection and insight, Selbst offers poems, song lyrics, and stories in verse that reflect on wisdom, joy, love, friendship, loss, and life itself. Within his diverse selection chosen from a larger body of work, Selbst explores the deeper thoughts, musings, and implications surrounding his observations and experiences, addresses the high, low, and searching spirit, reflects on both young and old love, and much more. Word Songs is a collection of poems, stories, and songs that provides a doorway to fresh insights and understandings as well as comfort for anyone desiring to explore their own thoughts, feelings, and pleasures in life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wry, unvarnished chronicle of a career in the rare book trade during its last Golden Age When Gary Goodman wandered into a run-down, used-book shop that was going out of business in East St. Paul in 1982, he had no idea the visit would change his life. He walked in as a psychiatric counselor and walked out as the store’s new owner. In The Last Bookseller Goodman describes his sometimes desperate, sometimes hilarious career as a used and rare book dealer in Minnesota—the early struggles, the travels to estate sales and book fairs, the remarkable finds, and the bibliophiles, forgers, book thieves, and book hoarders he met along the way. Here we meet the infamous St. Paul Book Bandit, Stephen Blumberg, who stole 24,000 rare books worth more than fifty million dollars; John Jenkins, the Texas rare book dealer who (probably) was murdered while standing in the middle of the Colorado River; and the eccentric Melvin McCosh, who filled his dilapidated Lake Minnetonka mansion with half a million books. In 1990, with a couple of partners, Goodman opened St. Croix Antiquarian Books in Stillwater, one of the Twin Cities region’s most venerable bookshops until it closed in 2017. This store became so successful and inspired so many other booksellers to move to town that Richard Booth, founder of the “book town” movement in Hay-on-Wye in Wales, declared Stillwater the First Book Town in North America. The internet changed the book business forever, and Goodman details how, after 2000, the internet made stores like his obsolete. In the 1990s, the Twin Cities had nearly fifty secondhand bookshops; today, there are fewer than ten. As both a memoir and a history of booksellers and book scouts, criminals and collectors, The Last Bookseller offers an ultimately poignant account of the used and rare book business during its final Golden Age.

It's a coffee-table devotional, and I give you My Word is both simple yet profound in its refreshing presentation of the author's obvious devotion to her God. Always encouraged to write, she uses the gift God has given her, opens it, and shares it - with you. Find a quiet time and place in your day, pick up this book and commune with God. There are self-help section introductions on how to study the Word of God, how to talk to Him, how to listen to Him, how to write your own up-to-date psalms (poetry), how to jot down your own personal musings, and how to find variety and fun in your day-by-day relationship with God. It'll help grow you as a person and a personality. I give you My Word.
