Book excerpt: Words of Overbrook was originally a spoken word album inspired by the audio recordings of Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs and Charles Bukowski. Distraught and disillusioned by the demolition of his favorite abandoned asylum, Wheeler Antabanez wrote Words of Overbrook during a nine-day outpouring of cathartic creativity. After the album's release on the Free Music Archive, Wheeler felt his work wasn't quite finished. He longed to somehow paint his words across the red bricks of the now demolished insane asylum. Curating from his archive of Overbrook photography, Wheeler achieved this goal by overlaying hand-painted text and displaying his words like graffiti across the asylum walls. For the first time, Words of Overbrook is available in print along with never before seen images of the abandoned Essex County Hospital Center. A note on the Words of Overbrook dual editions: Color printing is more expensive than black and white. To provide a price option for readers there are two editions of the book. The color version is for people who are primarily interested in the historic photos of Overbrook and want to see the buildings in their full glory. The black and white version is for fans of the spoken word album who aren't as concerned about color photography. Both versions are exactly the same design, but the black and white is less expensive. A note on the spoken word album: Perhaps the best way to enjoy this book is to listen to the spoken word album while you read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of language variation in social context continues to hold the attention of a large number of linguists. This research is promoted by the annual colloquia on New Ways of Analyzing Variation in English' (NWAVE). This volume is a selection of revised papers from the NWAVE XI, held at Georgetown University. It deals with a number of items, some of which have often been discussed, others that have been less emphasized. The first group of articles in the volume center on a frequent theme: speech communities as the essential setting for understanding variation in language. Earlier work in linguistic variation dealt for the most part with phonological variation and change. Syntactic and morphological change and variation in syntax are also discussed. A selection on the role of variation in understanding first language acquisition comprises three papers. Articles in the last section of the volume concern theoretical controversy and methodological advances.

New York Times bestselling author Candace Camp concludes her scintillating Willowmere series with a seductive tale of an alluring lady who dares to break the rules. . . . When Oliver, Earl of Stewkesbury, asks the dashing Lady Vivian Carlyle to ensure that his American cousins meet the cream of London society, he doesn’t anticipate the danger she will pose to his own self-control. Thrown into intimate contact with the lovely lady, Oliver finds he cannot stop thinking of Vivian—of her wit, of her smile . . . of her lips. And when Vivian, who has sworn never to subject herself to the bonds of matrimony, boldly suggests that she and Oliver become lovers instead, her scandalous proposal is temptation indeed! But with an alarming series of jewel thefts rocking London, the ever-outrageous Vivian insists on trying to discover the perpetrator despite Oliver’s admonitions. And when a bold lady steps into danger, it is a gentleman’s duty to protect her at all costs. What neither Oliver nor Vivian can anticipate, however, is that the ultimate cost may be both their hearts. . . .

Art. The broken windows of the abandoned sanitarium are foreboding and ominous, yet darkly inviting. The inmates have long since departed, but their suffering can still be felt imprinted on the stagnant air of the empty wards. The door at the front of the overgrown madhouse has been ripped from its hinges. It would be easy to cross the threshold, yet we hesitate to enter... Having spent a lifetime exploring the long-abandoned Essex Mountain Sanatorium and Overbrook Psychiatric Hospital in Northern New Jersey, Wheeler Antabanez, artist, writer, and intrepid explorer of New Jersey's abandoned and defiled places, is uniquely qualified to open doors at the Old Asylum that no one even knew existed. In these stories, illustrated with remarkably evocative paintings by the author, the broken hulk of the abandoned mental hospital comes vividly back to life, reanimated by a spirit of risk-taking, transgressive adventure, macabre humor, and the author's comprehensive artistic and personal mission to create from the ruins of our collective past an imaginative, vibrantly living whole. The book contains reproductions of a series of paintings by the author.

Book excerpt: On the night of March 2, 1962, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, right up the street from the chocolate factory, Wilt Chamberlain, a young and striking athlete celebrated as the Big Dipper, scored one hundred points in a game against the New York Knickerbockers. As historic and revolutionary as the achievement was, it remains shrouded in myth. The game was not televised; no New York sportswriters showed up; and a fourteen-year-old local boy ran onto the court when Chamberlain scored his hundredth point, shook his hand, and then ran off with the basketball. In telling the story of this remarkable night, author Gary M. Pomerantz brings to life a lost world of American sports. In 1962, the National Basketball Association, stepchild to the college game, was searching for its identity. Its teams were mostly white, the number of black players limited by an unspoken quota. Games were played in drafty, half-filled arenas, and the players traveled on buses and trains, telling tall tales, playing cards, and sometimes reading Joyce. Into this scene stepped the unprecedented Wilt Chamberlain: strong and quick-witted, voluble and enigmatic, a seven-footer who played with a colossal will and a dancer’s grace. That strength, will, grace, and mystery were never more in focus than on March 2, 1962. Pomerantz tracked down Knicks and Philadelphia Warriors, fans, journalists, team officials, other NBA stars of the era, and basketball historians, conducting more than 250 interviews in all, to recreate in painstaking detail the game that announced the Dipper’s greatness. He brings us to Hershey, Pennsylvania, a sweet-seeming model of the gentle, homogeneous small-town America that was fast becoming anachronistic. We see the fans and players, alternately fascinated and confused by Wilt, drawn anxiously into the spectacle. Pomerantz portrays the other legendary figures in this story: the Warriors’ elegant coach Frank McGuire; the beloved, if rumpled, team owner Eddie Gottlieb; and the irreverent p.a. announcer Dave “the Zink” Zinkoff, who handed out free salamis courtside. At the heart of the book is the self-made Chamberlain, a romantic cosmopolitan who owned a nightclub in Harlem and shrugged off segregation with a bebop cool but harbored every slight deep in his psyche. March 2, 1962, presented the awesome sight of Wilt Chamberlain imposing himself on a world that would diminish him. Wilt, 1962 is not only the dramatic story of a singular basketball game but a meditation on small towns, midcentury America, and one of the most intriguing figures in the pantheon of sports heroes. He warned her about gangster rappers and forbade her to go to Rilla's concert, but his strong guidance only fueled her defiance. Candace sneaked to the show anyway, and, at seventeen, she got the thrill of her life when Rilla invited her onstage for a special serenade. Candace gave herself to him that night and turned her back on everyone she knew when Rilla asked her to run away with him. Six months later Candace finds herself in Overbrook Meadows, Texas; a world away from the beautiful home and family she left behind in New York. Rilla has been dropped from his record label, and he's a fulltime dope man now. Candace's stomach is getting bigger, and she can't say for sure who the baby's father is. She thinks things are as bad as they can get, but she's wrong about that. Candace has not yet experienced the real pain her new life has in store.
