Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernestine is in over her head. Monday through Sunday, Ernestine's week is packed with after-school lessons—tuba, knitting, sculpting, water ballet, yoga, yodeling, and karate. Overwhelmed and exhausted, Ernestine decides to take matters into her own hands and heads off to the park with her Nanny where she builds a fort, watches the clouds, and plays all kinds of unstructured and imaginative games. But when a teacher calls Ernestine's mom to report that she has not shown up for yodeling, her parents search everywhere until at last they hear their daughter's laughter coming from the park. Ernestine tells her parents what a wonderful afternoon she's had, and explains her plight, asking, "I like my lessons, but can't I stop some of them?" This saga hilariously captures the dilemma of the modern-day over-scheduled child in riotous color and absurd extremes. A delightful heroine, Ernestine will be sure to put “play” back on everyone's agenda, demonstrating that in today's overscheduled world, everyone needs the joy of play and the simple wonders of childhood.

Book excerpt: Keep on sighting words!Use bits and parts of this book as needed. Pick and choose as best fits the situation. Maybe, oh gee, allow the student to select the "next" page. Students really respond positively to being actively involved in their own decision making processes. Learning words should be creative fun. Use the blank pages at the end of this book to make up your own word lists.Remember that words, and writing, and drawing and creativity (and imagination) all hold hands and are equally important in the learning process. Encourage exploration. It's the thinking process that is most important to/for the learner. Telling a student how to do something (the "right" and "wrong" ways) helps a student learn the rules. Allowing the student to think through his/her own methods/processing, allows for greater learning and understanding. (Mistakes will be made. Mistakes must be made - in order for learning to take place. Please allow for mistakes. If you want to "correct" something, please correct your own notion of continually trying to "fix" things. Perhaps every 10th or 20th page needs scrutiny. Not every page, and certainly not every word or, worse, every letter.)

Book excerpt: This workbook has been designed for use in the classroom whether in traditional, homeschool or virtual (e-learning) settings. Each puzzle contains twenty words that have been carefully chosen and are recommended to work with your students on.At the 2nd Grade level, words can be left to right, down, or diagonal, but we do not use backwards as an option. It's too confusing for many at this level. The solutions area in the back of the book and are meant for self-checking and/or parent/teacher checking, and of course, for those times when you look and look and still can't find the word!Because some of these words are only three or four letters, it is quite possible that some words will appear more than once within a puzzle. If you are giving points for each word located, consider bonus points for finding those duplicates. Also, it's very common that puzzles contain extra words that aren't on the list. It's a great way to give students that finish quickly something else to focus on.Unfortunately, due to the randomization of the letters in each puzzle, it is possible that a "bad word" or two may exist throughout the book. At this grade level, students amazingly find them often before adults do. Obviously, you should discourage searching for those words, but don't make it an issue until it is one or they'll go out of their way to find words. The 2nd Grade book is a leap from the 1st Grade book. While the First Grade book has 8x8 rows and boxes around each letter, the 2nd Grade book 16 x 16 rows and does not have boxes around each letter. There are two reasons for this. The doubling of the rows happens because there are 20 words in each week's lesson instead of eight. The boxes are removed because students learn to be more self-sufficient if they need guidelines by using a piece of paper or a ruler, and then gradually they tend to adapt to needing nothing at all and work very well with the non-boxed letters. As grade levels go up, the number of rows will range from 16 x 16 up to 29 x 29, and of course the words are grade level appropriate and get longer. The back of each page is deliberately blank so the students can focus using the same layout every week without fumbling with the book. While writing words or putting words in short sentences may be an option, we recommend using lined paper instead with the appropriately sized rows. One activity you might consider is having the students draw pictures of as many of the words as they can. You're creative, right? You'll figure something great to do with the back side of the pages. The pages are not perforated by design because many teachers have students turn in the entire book and some will not pass them back out until the following Monday when you are ready to introduce new words. This discourages students from working ahead.Don't want your students to be able to view the solutions at the back of the book? A few staples or some tape to bind those pages together will fix that, although most students enjoy being able to find the words without peeking at the answers, especially at younger ages.No separate Teachers' Edition is necessary with this workbook.Be sure to check out our other spelling books for other grade levels as well as other books we have published.
