Book Synopsis Studying Classroom Teaching as a Medium for Professional Development by : National Research Council
Download or read book Studying Classroom Teaching as a Medium for Professional Development written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mathematical Sciences Education Board (MSEB) and the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction (USNCMI) took advantage of a unique opportunity to bring educators together. In August 2000, following the Ninth International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME-9) in Makuhari, Japan, MSEB and USNCMI capitalized on the presence of mathematics educators in attendance from the United States and Japan by holding a two and a half-day workshop on the professional development of mathematics teachers. This workshop used the expertise of the participants from the two countries to develop a better, more flexible, and more useful understanding of the knowledge that is needed to teach well and how to help teachers to obtain this knowledge. A major focus of the workshop was to discuss teachers' opportunities in both societies-using teaching practice as a medium for professional development. Another focus of the workshop addressed practice by considering the records of teaching, including videos of classroom lessons and cases describing teachers and their work. These proceedings reflect the activities and discussion of the workshop using both print and video to enable others to share in their experience

Download or read book Papers 2 written by Jonathan Sergison and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of illustrated papers by British architects Jonathan Sergison and Stephen Bates written between 2002 and 2007. Writing, like drawing and talking together, supports their collaborative and creative work, providing as it does a tangible reference point for communication and in the search for shared objectives. Although each of the papers included in this volume was written by one of the architects, they acknowledge shared authorship of their content and objective. In the preparation of each paper, the observer acts as a friendly critic to the write, integral to the process and supportive of the exploration of personal and shared experience. Some of theses papers wrere written as a result of self-imposed discipline, others were prepared as lectures, to support their teaching practice, to highlight a particular theme or encourage a way of looking at something. Others were written as contributions towards symposia, conferences and publications, or in response to invitations to speak publicly about their work. In some cases, a lecture based on notes and images has been subsuquently developed for publication. This results in a rich mix in terms of contet, lenght, structure and character. The twenty papers are organised thematically and chronologically within each section, addressing reflections on their own position within architectural discourse, on the process of making buildings, on some of the ideas that recur in their work and on aspects of place.
Book Synopsis Japanese Love Hotels by : Sarah Chaplin
Download or read book Japanese Love Hotels written by Sarah Chaplin and published by Taylor & Francis US. This book was released on 2010-10-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on theories of place, consumption and identity, Sarah Chaplin details the evolution of the love hotel in urban Japan since the 1950s. Love hotels emerged in the late 1950s following a ban of licensed prostitution, then were extremely popular in the 1970s, were then legislated against in the 1980s and are now perceived as 'leisure', 'fashion' or 'boutique' hotels. Representing a timely opportunity to capture and evaluate the dying manifestations of an important era in Japanese social and cultural history, this book provides a critical account of the love hotel as a unique typology. It considers its spatial, aesthetic, semiotic, and locational denotations and connotations, which results in a richly nuanced cultural reading. The love hotel is presented as a key indicator of social and cultural change in post-war Japan, and as such this book will be of interest to a wide and international readership including students of Japanese culture, society and architecture.
