Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary-School Speller IN recent years a number of careful investigations have been made as to the extent of the vocabularies that are employed by adults in personal and business correspondence, and also by pupils in the writ ten work required in Elementary schools. The results of these investigations indicate that in these several fields the number of different words employed is decidedly less than has been generally supposed. Accordingly, many educa tors have suggested that the vocabulary of the spelling book should be limited to the words in practical use in composition, and that ample provision should be made for their imten sive study in the regular drill work of the schoolroom. The elementary-school Speller has been prepared in response to these suggestions. It is planned to cover the formal work in spelling and word-study for the grades below the high school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Essentials in Spelling: A Word List and Teacher's Manual for Elementary Schools There is a good deal of legitimate complaint concerning the present day grammar school course of study. It is charged that our standards are too exacting, our texts too voluminous, our subjects too congested, the teacher's time overcrowded, and a vast mass of work prescribed that must, necessarily, be done in a hasty, helter-skelter manner. In addition to these complaints, and largely as a result of the facts which they allege, come other charges: that an undue percentage of chil dren are over age, that far too many boys and girls drop out before finishing the common school course; that those who stay are thinly plated with an unsubstantial smattering of many things, and really have very little thorough grounding in even the commonest essentials of the common schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Words Say: A Practical Analysis of Words, for Use in Elementary Schools The accompanying notes are designed to show that the use Of a word ever conforms to its analysis, and that the analysis is never misleading. If the use is figurative a study of the metaphor will show that it is ever an appropriate, and invariably a happy one.* After the analysis and exact sense Of a word have been mastered the teacher is advised to require the use Of the word in a few original sentences. This application will tend to fix the whole matter more fully in the mind; and it will tend to bring out the different, but' always consist ent, shades Of use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quincy Word List: Over Six Thousand of the Commonest English Words Carefully Graded for Elementary Schools Some years ago the author of this Word List, being convinced that spelling learned incidentally, by absorption, was a failure, prepared a list of words for use in the schools under his supervision without any intention of making a spelling book, but repeated calls for the list have induced him to make it available by publishing it. When used according to the author's plan it is not merely a speller but an elementary word study, although not expected to take the place of a dictionary in the upper grades. The list contains over six thousand of the commonest words of our language, graded according to their con tent rather than according to their length, and arranged in groups adapted to a definite plan outlined under Sug gestions to the Teacher. For convenience in finding any desired word of a grade, the words are given in alphabetical order, except, where homonyms and words easily confused have been separated. The list of words for the eighth grade, together with the supplementary list, furnish twice as many words as are given in other grades, for the convenience of schools hav ing nine grades, and also for those teachers who may wish to give longer lessons in this grade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Programme of Studies for the Elementary School: Grades I to Vi Learning to read in the modern way is as simple and natural as learning to talk. The teacher bases her procedure on the principle that as a child learns to talk by talking, so he learns to read by reading. This principle being accepted, teaching to read resolves itself into providing the pupil with plenty of suitably graded reading material, and standing by to help him in his use of it. The modern teacher begins by teaching the pupil to recognize in print, on the blackboard and card, eight or ten of the words used in the first few pages of the primer. She does this by associating the words with pictures; as, boy, girl, cat, dog, etc.; or with actions; as, run, play, jump. If the teacher prefer, She may begin by teaching the pupils to recognize a few Simple sentences as wholes. When the chil dren become familiar with these, they begin to distinguish the separate words of which they are composed, and quickly learn to recognize the more important and striking Single words wherever they see them. As soon as the pupil knows a few words, the teacher begins arranging them for him in simple sentences, and having him read, that is, look at the sentence and tell the story, or perform the action. After the pupil has done this, he should be allowed to read his sentence orally. To say the words aloud is not necessarily reading, however; to read means to get thought. In each lesson the teacher presents a little group of new sentences made from the old words and including one or two new Words. The new words Should be so chosen and so placed that the child may be able to guess the meaning Of the unknown word from the known context. The teacher trains him to do this; it is the first and fundamental device used by all readers young and old. Each day the pupil reviews the old words in new ar rangements; each day he adds one or two new words to his stock, learning to read by reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Science in the Elementary School The part that science plays in modern life is so vital that science teaching must inevitably have an important place in the school curriculum. There has been some confusion regarding the term to be used to cover the work in science in the elementary school Nature-study' has been the word in most common usage. But there is considerable misunderstanding as to what is included under this term. In recent years it has been used in an ever-broadening sense till now the word is used by many educators to include all phases of science adapted to the elementary school. But among people in general the common notion still prevails that nature-study includes only the study of Wild plants and animals. So that, considering all sides of the matter, it has seemed better to the author to adopt the word science instead of nature-study, as tending to involve less mis understanding and as helping to establish an appropriate and standard term. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jones First Reader This is the first book of a series of Readers intended to cover the reading work of the eight grades of the elementary schools. It is not intended that the series shall furnish all the reading matter needed in these grades, but rather a basal line of thought and a vocab ulary sufficient for the interpretation of all reading matter used in these grades from whatever sources taken. Each book of the series is adapted to its place and part in such a plan. This book begins its work well within the child's present interests, but in some one or more of its lessons pushes each of these interests beyond the point which the child could reach without assistance. The subject-matter of this book has been carefully chosen from all fields of knowledge desirable for children of the age for which it is intended. Nature study has been given a prominent place, especially in the earlier pages. Animals have been presented through their most pleasing and characteristic attributes and the children are led to sympathetic and humane treatment of themthrough a real interest in them and their needs. Through out the book care has been taken to present the elements of ethics as applied concretely to conduct. The greatest service that a series of Readers can render to pupils is to supply each with proper standards of life and conduct. This book, as the first of the series, touches many matters pertaining to life and conduct, showing moral forces at work producing their legitimate effects. The lessons drawn from nature study give preference to the poetical rather than to the scientific interpretation of nature. The poetical interpretation, however, is always based on and developed from a correct relationship of facts, so that the child will have no mistaken notions to correct in his later scientific studies. This book is adapted for use through each or all of the modern methods of teaching beginners to read. The sentence method, the word method, and the phonic method - if such simple processes of teaching may properly be dignified by the term method - may be used to advantage, separately or in happy combination. The modern teacher knows well how to use good reading matter so as to develop the power to read well and at the same time to cultivate the love for good literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Word Book for Primary Grades: An Elementary Course in Phonetics and Spelling Practically all modern Courses of Study for the primary grades outline drill on phonics or the elementary sounds of the English language. These drills are helpful to all classes of pupils, but are especially significant for children whose vernacular is not English. In all these cases it is highly important that the children shall have the benefit of drill on the phonic elements as early as possible in school life, and thus secure facility in their use. Other aims of phonic drill are, (a) the correction of defects in the organs of speech while pupils are still young, (b) the development of the power of correct pronunciation. The basis for these drills is found in the exercises of The Mod ern Word Book, which includes a vocabulary of nearly one thousand common words.
