Book excerpt: Comprises an overview of the research done on the use of word processing in the elementary grades. Most of the studies showed that students wrote more and wrote better with word processors than they did with traditional tools. They improved their spelling, punctuation, organization, word choice, and ideas. Computer use also had a positive effect on the writing of children with special needs (e.g., English as a second language) and with learning disabilities. While further study is needed to confirm this, it appears that there is a transfer of the skills acquired through word processing to writing with traditional tools. Primary-age students seem to adapt more readily to the computer than do older elementary school students. Research also seems to indicate a relationship between reading and writing skills.

Book excerpt: Intended as a guide for elementary school teachers who want to use the computer as a writing tool in their classrooms, this booklet offers an outline of practical information and techniques for introducing young children to computers in kindergarten through grade 6. The first chapter explains the process approach to writing and advocates computer use to generate student enthusiasm for writing, while the second chapter discusses solving writing problems with the word processor. The third chapter offers activities for the word processor as a writing tool and is subdivided as follows: (1) kindergarten--the process begins, (2) first grade--introducing a simple-word processing package, (3) second grade--simple revision commands, (4) third grade--beginning to control the system, (5) fourth grade--a year of transition, (6) fifth grade--extended application, and (7) sixth grade--full use of the system. The remaining two chapters discuss possible problems and practical solutions and how to select word-processing software. A brief conclusion recapitulates the ideas about the promise of microcomputers that underlie the manual, and a list of references is appended. (NKA)

This study was conducted during the 2012-2013 school year at a low socio economic high school located in California's Central Valley. Student writing data were analyzed using an independent t-test to determine if a significant difference existed in student writing using a computer word processor compared to a pen and paper. At the end of the study, there was no significant difference in student writing using a computer word processor compared to a pen and paper.

Book excerpt: Designed to tap the rich collection of instructional techniques in the ERIC database, this compilation of lesson plans offers practical suggestions for incorporating computers into the English/language arts classroom at both the elementary and secondary level. Because many teachers and administrators are using computers for the first time, the first section of the TRIED offers guidelines on the sequential organization of word-processing skills, software selection, class organization, desktop publishing, and a variety of other considerations for the effective integration of computers into the instructional program. The second section of the TRIED provides lessons using the computer in elementary language arts classes. The final section of the TRIED offers lessons for English teachers to use with their computer resources. A 47-item annotated bibliography of related resources in the ERIC database is attached. (RS)

Students using traditional paper and pencil methods produced higher quality writing, but wrote less than students using a word processor. In many cases, students' keyboarding skills were not sufficient to allow for comfortable and effective use of the word processor.

Book excerpt: This four-volume collection reprints key debates about exactly what it means to be literate and how literacy can best be taught. Rather than centering on the emotional reaction of mass media debates, this set focuses on research findings into processes and pedagogy. The themes covered include Literacy : its nature and its teaching, Reading - processes and teaching, Writing - processes and teaching and New Literacies - the impact of technologies.
