JJ had trusted Michaella once before, so gave her a call. Book excerpt: The most famous of the bloody southern textile strikes that took place in the late 1920s occurred at the Loray Mill in Gastonia, North Carolina, where workers endured fifty-five-hour work weeks, the stretchout, and pay so low that everyone in their families over sixteen normally was expected to enter the mill. Strike! is a vivid portrait of the mill workers' living and working conditions, the discomfort of the few southern liberals, the labor spies, the wavering morale of the strikers, the shootings, deaths, and trials, and the vigilante mobs. The story is told by Mary Heaton Vorse, the leading labor reporter of the period, who had covered major strikes since 1912. This novel was the first of six inspired by the Gastonia strike. Critics hailed it as the best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago medicine was straightforward. Doctors had limited therapeutic options and patients did as they were told. Today, an array of medial interventions is putting increasing pressure on limited resources, patients are questioning everything and doctors are uncertain of their role. Health economists hoped to offer important insights to aid decision making, but their technical frameworks bore little resemblance to the practical requirements of end users. Now, this book presents the concepts and insights that health economics has to offer in a way that is accessible to every healthcare decision maker. Getting Health Economics into Practice is for all those who are involved in the planning, commissioning and delivery of healthcare. It illuminates the practical value that the concepts and principles of health economics can offer decision makers at all levels. Comprehensive and extensive, it is the first such book to be edited by a clinician rather than a health economist, with contributions from an expert panel of specialists. This approach ensures it is accessible and useful in the everyday work of health professionals. It is relevant for all healthcare sectors, in particular for Primary Care Trusts, and is essential reading for managers, researchers, and especially practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First, you can't lead the way I lead. You wouldn't want to, and the people you lead wouldn't want you to either. The best leaders lead from their strengths. You want to lead in the way that works best for you. Only I can lead my way, and sometimes it's pretty bizarre. According to a fund-raising consultant, I'm not very presidential. I consider this high praise. We have to work within our basic dispositions to be effective. Unfortunately, a lot of parents, coaches, and inspirational speakers try to get us to believe otherwise. Commencements are breeding grounds for these aggrandizing lies, and it's the speakers who are doing the lying. Leading People from the Middle addresses 20th century leadership assumptions, the new dynamics of 21st-century leadership, and how leaders can change to meet the demands of today's organizations. Over the course of this book, the author, William P. Robinson discusses his understanding of leading from the middle as it refers to influencing from among, rather than from above, below, or in front of one's group. Leading from the middle refers to positioning ourselves alongside of those whom we've empowered, working shoulder to shoulder. It refers to living in the center of a mission, rather than simply lifting it up. He believes that leaders will set the standard and then work very hard to help their people achieve the group's goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about four high school teenagers who are called misfits, left-outs, and losers by their peers because of their defiant behavior toward teachers and administrators at their high school. The first teen, a native American, is a drug user whose father is a drug addict and petty thief. The second teen, who is Jewish, has been in and out of the detention center for a series of house burglaries. His father is unemployed, and his mother died from AIDS. The third teen, a Puerto Rican, drinks alcohol and hangs out all night in the streets, worrying his mother who is on the brink of a nervous breakdown. The fourth teen is an African American who bullies students after school. He would often shake them down for money or physically assault them for no reason. Both of his parents are doing time in prison, and he is living with his grandmother. These four teens were the most likely to fail in life. They were disrespectful and belligerent. Nevertheless, the stage was set to move them to another type of educational environment—one that would hold them accountable in strict fashion, or else, the next move could have them sent away to the state reformatory for boys. This new educational environment for them would be an alternative school that would force them to plot a journey toward changing their attitude and behavior to be productive human beings, despite coming from a life of despair, stemming from a broken home. They have acknowledged that they are waist-deep in mud and need to be rescued, so therefore, they make a pact among themselves to succeed in life, to build and make an indelible work. The questions are, How do they do it? What is their plan to be rescued from the mud? Time will tell.

The city is left to wonder who is the menace that calls himself "D" and how can he perpetrate his heinous crimes while leaving so little evidence.----Chosen to end the nightmare is Sergeant Stanley Bodinger. He's a seasoned detective who's bent on tracking down the serial madman. Alcoholic ex-cop Frank Castro is also on the case. Inspired by the grace of a wealthy client, the private investigator sees it's time to change his ways. Just when things are looking up, Frank's world becomes chaos.----Azure Dying is the story of three men. Three men set on a collision course to destruction...of which only one may survive.---- "Readers will be unable to put Azure Dying down.
