Quintet no. 3.$22.00Henri Brod (1799-1839) was a French oboist, instrument-maker, and composer active throughout the early nineteenth century. He studied oboe under Gustave Vogt at the Paris Conservatory, ultimately becoming teacher there himself in 1832. He also played second oboe next to Vogt at the Paris Opéra, where Fétis found Brod¿s tone sweeter than that of his teacher. Brod became interested in the construction of the oboe and was perhaps the first builder to add octave keys to the instrument. His Méthode pour le hautbois (Paris, 1835-36) provides valuable technical information concerning the oboe and remains a useful resource for modern players. Brod¿s three woodwind quintets most likely date from the second decade of the nineteenth century and were printed by two separate publishers, Pacini and Schonenberger, both of Paris. All three quintets feature a four-movement format: a longer first movement in sonata form, a slow movement, a minuet, and a quick-tempo finale. As a whole, the quintets form a nice complement to those of Danzi, Reicha, and somewhat later, Franz Lachner. Brod remains the only actual woodwind player among these early composers of wind quintets. While not very well known today, Brod¿s contributions to the wind quintet literature are significant and worthy of greater attention; this is particularly true in view of the paucity of wind quintets throughout the nineteenth century. It is to be hoped that through this critical edition, Brod¿s importance to the early development of the wind quintet will be recognized and his beautiful works heard more often..ContentsWoodwind Quintet No. 1 in E-flat Major[I] Introduction: Adagio; Allegro vivace[II] Andante[III] Minuetto: Allegro[IV] PrestoWoodwind Quintet No. 2 in F Major[I] Introduction: Lento; Allegro[II] Andante[III] Minuetto[IV] Finale: PrestoWoodwind Quintet No. 3 in C Major[I] Allegretto[II] Andante non troppo[III] Minuetto: Allegro[IV] Allegro

Book excerpt: The purpose of this work has been to deal with clarinet performance as it has evolved in the literature since approximately 1950: to identify or "catalogue" the practices now prevalent which differ from those formerly standardized; to provide some perspective on specific performance capabilities and limitations; and, whenever appropriate, to include suggestions for performance based on the author's own experience. It is intended as a guidebook for composers as well as a manual to which clarinettists might refer in working out various problems associated with new music performance. --pref.

Book excerpt: Letters I Never Mailed: Clues to a Life, by Alec Wilder, in a new, annotated edition with introduction and supplementary material by David Demsey, foreword by jazz pianist Marian McPartland, and photographs by Louis Ouzer. Letters I Never Mailed: Clues to a Life, by Alec Wilder, in a new, annotated edition with introduction and supplementary material by David Demsey, foreword by jazz pianist Marian McPartland, and photographs by Louis Ouzer. Alec Wilder is a rare example of a composer who established a reputation both as a prolific composer of concertos, sonatas, and operas, and as a popular songwriter [including the hit "I'll Be Around"]. He was fearsomely articulate and had a wide and varied circle of friends ranging from Graham Greene to Frank Sinatra and Stan Getz. Letters I Never Mailed, hailed at its first publication [in 1975, by Little, Brown], tells the story of Wilder's musical and personal life through unsent "letters" addressed to various friends. In it, he shares his insights -- and sometimes salty opinions -- on composing, musical life, and the tension between art and commercialism. Thisnew, scholarly edition leaves Wilder's original text intact but decodes the mysteries of the original through an annotated index that identifies the letters' addressees, a biographical essay by David Demsey, and photographs by renowned photographer and lifelong friend of Wilder, Louis Ouzer. David Demsey is Professor of Music and coordinator of jazz studies at William Paterson University and an active jazz and classical saxophonist. He is co-author of Alec Wilder: A Bio-Bibliography [Greenwood Press] and has contributed to The Oxford Companion to Jazz.

Book excerpt: First published in 2001, this work provides detailed information taken from the ’Programmes-as-Broadcast’ daily log of output held at the BBC Written Archives Centre in Caversham. Arranged in chronological order, entries are given for broadcasts of first performances of musical works in the United Kingdom, and include details of: the date of the broadcast, the composer, the title of the work, performers and conductor. In addition to its usefulness as a reference tool, the Chronicle enables us to gauge the trends in twentieth-century British musical life, and the role of the BBC in their promotion.

This book was released on 2015-01-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonard Bernstein touched millions of lives as composer, conductor, teacher, and activist. He frequently visited homes around the world through the medium of television, particularly through his fifty-three award-winning Young People’s Concerts (1958-1972), which at their height were seen by nearly ten million in over forty countries. Originally designed for young viewers but equally attractive to eager adults, Bernstein’s brilliance as a teacher shined brightly in his televised presentations. And yet, despite the light touch of the “maestro,” the innocence of his audience, and the joyousness of each show’s topic, the turbulence of the times would peek through. In this first in-depth look at the series, Alicia Kopfstein-Penk’s Leonard Bernstein and His Young People’s Concerts illustrates how the cultural, social, political, and musical upheavals of the long sixties impacted Bernstein’s life and his Young People’s Concerts. Responding to trends in corporate sponsorship, censorship, and arts programming from the Golden Age of Television into the 1970s, the Young People’s Concerts would show the impact of and reflect the social and cultural politics of the Cold War, Vietnam, the Civil Rights and Women’s Movements, and the Counterculture. Bernstein cheerfully bridged classical and popular tastes, juxtaposing the Beatles with Mozart even as he offered personal, televised pleas for peace and unity. At the same time, the concerts reflect Bernstein’s troubled relationship as a professional musician with the dominance of atonality and his quest to nurture American music. Anyone who enjoys the oeuvre of Leonard Bernstein, has watched his Young People’s Concerts, or is passionate about the history of the long sixties will find in Leonard Bernstein and His Young People’s Concerts a story of all three captured in this monumental study.
