Book Synopsis Freshwater Fungi by : E. B. Gareth Jones
Download or read book Freshwater Fungi written by E. B. Gareth Jones and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The available literature on freshwater fungi is limited. Over the subsequent years a considerable volume of scientific papers have appeared scattered throughout numerous journals. There is therefore no recent synthesis of the subject and this is the objective of the proposed book. Freshwater habitats are rich in fungi with some 3,000 described species, most of papers focussing on their identification, substrata they grow on and world distribution. However, these fungi play an important role in the freshwater ecosystem, and are primarily involved in the breakdown of leaf litter contributing food for detritus feeders. Our book will bring together a wide range of acclaimed mycologists to review recent developments on the biology and ecology of freshwater fungi, particularly their molecular phylogeny, biodiversity, causative diseases of freshwater amphibians, fishes and invertebrate animals, decomposition of leaf litter, stream pollution and their potential role in bioremediation.

Book Synopsis Effects of Abatement of Domestic Sewage Pollution on the Benthos, Volumes of Zooplankton, and the Fouling Organisms of Biscayne Bay, Florida by : J. Kneeland McNulty

Kneeland McNulty and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various elements of the biota of northern Biscayne Bay, Florida, were studied before and after abatement of pollution. The pollution consisted of 136 to 227 million liters per day of untreated domestic sewage. Four years after removal of the pollution certain changes had taken place. At distances of 100 to 740 meters seaward from outfalls, in water depths of one to three meters in hard bottom, populations of benthic macroinvertebrates had declined to abnormally large numbers of species and individuals to normal numbers of each, while soft-bottom populations had changed qualitatively but not quantitatively. Adjacent to outfalls, populations had increased in numbers of species and numbers of individuals in hard sandy bottoms only. Volumes of zooplankton had decreased to about one-half the pre-abatement values in poorly flushed waters; elsewhere, they remained about the same. Dissolved inorganic phosphate-phosphorus decreased similarly. Abundance of amphipod tubes had declined markedly, a change not shared by the quantities of other fouling organisms (including barnacles), which remained about the same. There was no evidence of improved commercial and sport fishing following abatement; this is interpreted to mean that long-lasting detrimental effects have resulted from pollution and dredging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Access to safe water is a fundamental human need and therefore a basic human right" --Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary General Edited by two world-renowned scientists in the field, The Handbook of Water and Wastewater Microbiology provides a definitive and comprehensive coverage of water and wastewater microbiology. With contributions from experts from around the world, this book gives a global perspective on the important issues faced in the provision of safe drinking water, the problems of dealing with aquatic pollution and the processes involved in wastewater management. Starting with an introductory chapter of basic microbiological principles, The Handbook of Water and Wastewater Microbiology develops these principles further, ensuring that this is the essential text for process engineers with little microbiological experience and specialist microbiologists alike. Comprehensive selection of reviews dealing with drinking water and aquatic pollution Provides an understading of basic microbiology and how it is applied to engineering process solutions Suitable for all levels of knowledge in microbiology -from those with no background to specialists who require the depth of information
