Book excerpt: In February 2008, Alicia Crawley got the phone call every parent dreads: two of her children had been in a car accident. Her son, Jonathan, was fine, but by the time Alicia arrived at the scene minutes later, her sixteen-year-old daughter, Lauren, had died. In the days that followed, Alicia, who until then had had a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ, was plunged into the dark pit of grief, unable even to feel Gods presence. His seeming silence left her spiritually paralyzed. Alicia barely recognized herself or her life, but she kept going to Gods word, seeking comfort, understanding, and purpose. She came to realize that He had never left her but that she hadnt been able to hear Him over the roar of her pain. Deeply thoughtful, honest, and unafraid to ask difficult questions, Alicia shares here what she learned about suffering, about heaven, and about listening to and trusting God. Although support groups, individual therapy, and medication can all help at a time of profound loss, Wonderful Counselor assures us that the Holy Spirit is the ultimate source of wisdom and healing. For Alicia, turning to God provided more than comfort; it oriented her family toward the future and toward opportunities to reach the lost and broken around them in ways and in places they never could have imagined. Surrendering their beloved Lauren took on meaning they never thought possible. Guided by the Spirit, they have allowed her legacy to become one of hope and joy.

God’s Word is skillfully woven into the material lending the note of God’s authority. “Sixteen Sessions with the WONDERFUL COUNSELOR” is a good book to give to counselees and a great book in helping to train lay people.” -Walt Croom, Ph.D, General Director of Military Evangelism, Inc. “In “Sixteen Sessions with the WONDERFUL COUNSELOR” Dan Peters wastes no words as he mines from the wealth of Scripture the wisdom and ways of our God in applying His truth to a variety of real-life situations. Great value is found in the stimulating questions at the end of each chapter and then even greater value is discovered in his wise answers in the back of the book. This is a concise and sharp tool in equipping one another to aid others in their battle with sin and its difficult effects.” -David A. Jones - Pastor of Campbell Memorial Baptist Church in WV. “This book isn’t another self-help book based upon pop psychology. Dan Peters has gleaned some wonderful insights from the Bible on how God himself counseled people. This is a wonderful tool to get to know God better and how to counsel others in these same areas. As an expositor of the Bible and a biblical counselor that I’ve respected over the years, Dan consistently allows the text of Scripture to speak for itself rather than reading into it. This book is a wonderful tool to train future pastors. This is a must read for pastors, counselors and small group members.” -Rick Leineweber, Pastor of Small Groups at Atlantic Shores Baptist Church and Head Consultant for BiblicalDisciplemaking.NET “I read your book and think it is fantastic. Your simple, Bible-based approach to life’s most tangled issues is both inspiring and refreshing in an age that promotes the wisdom of man. -Dr. David Nelson, President, Founder & Executive Director at Crossing Cultures International.

To get to the core of this belief, this latest volume in the Foundations of Evangelical Theology series lays out a systematic summary of Christology from philosophical, biblical, and historical perspectives—concluding that Jesus Christ is God the Son incarnate, both fully divine and fully human. Readers will learn to better know, love, trust, and obey Christ—unashamed to proclaim him as the only Lord and Savior. Part of the Foundations of Evangelical Theology series.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Book excerpt: Celebrate the Best Thing About Christmas. It's hard to say how it happens, but somehow, in the midst of all the good things we enjoy at Christmastime, Jesus Himself can sometimes get lost--even by those who love Him. But what a terrible loss! During this joyful season, this small book can help you refocus on Christ and prepare your heart for worship and adoration. There are many ways to see Him: as Savior, as King, as Messiah, as Teacher, as Lord--. But among all the rich possibilities, these meditations turn the spotlight on the first of four momentous titles named in Isaiah's beloved passage: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. --Isaiah 9: 6 In Wonderful Counselor, you'll find fourteen brief meditations--one for each of the fourteen days leading up to Christmas--created to gently turn your thoughts toward our beloved Savior.

Book excerpt: Harry has been running Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment programs for over thirty years. It is from this professional mindset that he shares his insights from the Bible. First he walks the reader through the scriptures on how we are made in the image of God but are fallen. Then he integrates our design and sin nature with Jesus' teaching in the Parable of the Sower, where Jesus identifies four different spiritual conditions. Lastly, he takes the reader through a clinical observation of reviewing Jesus' work with each of the four types of spiritual conditions. This book is not about drugs. It is about how we are all damaged and in need of a recovery program. He shows how Jesus as the "Wonderful Counselor" models the delivery of this recovery program. He was Director of Counseling at White Deer Run (Allenwood, Pa.) for ten years. For over twenty years he has been the Drug and Alcohol Treatment Manager at the State Correctional Institution at Muncy, which is a women's prison. He has earned his B.A. degree in Psychology from Millersville University and his M.A. Degree in Counseling from Liberty University. His Masters Degree was from a Christian perspective and his studies included two Masters level theology courses. From 9/94 through 5/03 he taught two Drug & Alcohol courses at Lycoming College. He has been a Certified Addictions Counselor since 1979, a Certified Clinical Supervisor since 1995 and a Licensed Professional Counselor since 2002. He has studied the entire Bible from 1982 to 1985 and has served as a Deacon, Elder and Bible Study and Sunday School teacher. Harry has been married to Carla for over thirty-seven years and they have two children and two grandchildren. They reside in Milton, Pa. "In God We Trust". He can be contacted at [email protected].

Avail yourself of the means of grace. Discipline yourself. But Scripture portrays the dynamics of sanctification in a rich variety of ways. No single factor, truth, or protocol can capture why and how a person is changed into the image of Christ. Weaving together personal stories, biblical exposition, and theological reflection, David Powlison shows the personal and particular ways that God meets you where you are to produce change. He highlights the variety of factors that work together, helping us to avoid sweeping generalizations and pat answers in the search for a key to sanctification. This book is a go-to resource for understanding the multifaceted, lifelong, personal journey of sanctification.
