Book Synopsis Women in Philosophy by : Katrina Hutchison
Download or read book Women in Philosophy written by Katrina Hutchison and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its place in the humanities, the career prospects and numbers of women in philosophy much more closely resemble those found in the sciences and engineering. This book collects a series of critical essays by female philosophers pursuing the question of why philosophy continues to be inhospitable to women and what can be done to change it. By examining the social and institutional conditions of contemporary academic philosophy in the Anglophone world as well as its methods, culture, and characteristic commitments, the volume provides a case study in interpretation of one academic discipline in which women's progress seems to have stalled since initial gains made in the 1980s. Some contributors make use of concepts developed in other contexts to explain women's under-representation, including the effects of unconscious biases, stereotype threat, and micro-inequities. Other chapters draw on the resources of feminist philosophy to challenge everyday understandings of time, communication, authority and merit, as these shape effective but often unrecognized forms of discrimination and exclusion. Often it is assumed that women need to change to fit existing institutions. This book instead offers concrete reflections on the way in which philosophy needs to change, in order to accommodate and benefit from the important contribution women's full participation makes to the discipline.
Book Synopsis Changing the Educational Landscape by : Jane Roland Martin
Download or read book Changing the Educational Landscape written by Jane Roland Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing the Educational Landscape is a collection of the best-known and best-loved essays by the renowned feminist philosopher of education, Jane Roland Martin. Trained as an analytic philosopher at a time before women or feminist ideas were welcome in the field, Martin brought a philosopher's detachment to her earliest efforts at revolutionizing the curriculum. Her later essays on women and gender further showcase the tremendous intellectual energy she brought to the field of feminist educational theory. Martin explores the challenges and contradictions posed by the very concept of women's education, and also recognizes how the presence of women necessitates the rearticulation of not only the curriculum but also the standard ideologies in education.

Book Synopsis Education Feminism by : Barbara J. Thayer-Bacon
Download or read book Education Feminism written by Barbara J. Thayer-Bacon and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of important essays by feminist scholars from cultural studies, philosophy of education, curriculum theory, and womens studies. Education Feminism is a revised and updated version of Lynda Stones out-of-print anthology, The Education Feminism Reader. The text is intended as a course text and provides students a foundational base in feminist theories in education. The classics section is comprised of the readings that students have most responded to in classes. The contemporary readings section demonstrates how the third-wave feminist criticism of the 1990s has an impact on todays feminist work. Both of these sections address critical multicultural educational issues and have an inclusive, diverse selection of feminist scholars who bring race, class, sexual orientation, religious practices, and colonial/postcolonial perspectives to bear on their work. The individual essays are concise and well written and arranged in such a way that it is easy for instructors to assign them around themes of their own choosing. The incredible value of this fine collection is that it demonstrates what it means to critically consider, interrogate, and challenge historic and contemporary ideas regarding educational equity while using these very ideas to imagine new possibilities. It will serve as an indispensable resource in graduate classrooms where students can use the text to ground and forward explorations of the necessarily complex considerations of equity in education today. As the articles contained in this text span nearly 40 years of scholarship related to these issues, this volume sheds light on how feminist, gender, and sexuality theory has evolved within and beyond the field of philosophy of education over time. Key themes explored in the book include women’s ways of knowing, the challenges women (and girls) face in taking up professional employment across diverse fields historically and today, and how feminist and related theories can enable women in professional development roles to empower each other. Book Synopsis Changing Education by : Joyce Antler
Download or read book Changing Education written by Joyce Antler and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1990-07-05 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By combining history, theory, philosophy, case studies and monographs with broader issues, Changing Education shows how educational experience and knowledge are deeply gendered. One of its strengths--indeed the excitement of women's studies in general--is its breadth and interdisciplinary nature. It pays attention to such issues in feminist theory andwomen's studies as women's culture and the sameness versus difference debate; at the same time it provides a wealth of information and new material that is not available elsewhere." -- Susan Ware, New York University "It highlights gender as a cultural phenomenon, showing that women's experience in education has been shaped by gender-specific stereotypes and concepts. At the same time, the essays show how women used gender categories to their own advantage to create new lines of work (such as kindergarten teaching and child study activity) or to overcome societal prejudice by way of collective action (such as the Boston Women's Health Collective). "It makes an important contribution to the debate about women's culture versus women's politics, showing the significance of each; e.g., the women's page of the Jewish Daily Foreword as a vehicle for women's (traditional) culture and contemporary committed feminism. I think you have a winner here." -- Ann J. Lane, Colgate University
Book Synopsis Women Philosophers by : Dorothy G. Rogers
Download or read book Women Philosophers written by Dorothy G. Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Illuminating a significant moment in the development of both American and feminist philosophical history, this study explores the experience and work of the women of the early American idealist movement. Beginning in St. Louis, Missouri in 1858, it became more influential as women joined and contributed to its development. Many of these women were pioneers in education and were expanding women's role in it as teachers and scholars. Some were also ardent feminists. Chief among them were Susan E. Blow, Anna C. Brackett, Grace C. Bibb, Ellen M. Mitchell, Lucia Ames Mead, Caroline E. Sherman, and May Wright Sewall. Providing new insights into the work of the core group of women thinkers, this volume includes new information about women who became associated with the movement as it expanded and developed offshoots in other parts of the nation. This includes the origins of the philosophical-idealist roots of their pacifist thought and activism, apparent in their writings and speeches, and the neo-Hegelian movement."--

Book Synopsis Gender Equality in the Philosophy of Education by : Connie Titone
Download or read book Gender Equality in the Philosophy of Education written by Connie Titone and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an extensive introduction to the philosophical work of Catharine Macaulay, as expressed in her Letters on Education (1790). It traces the theme of gender and education comparing Macaulay's ideas to those of her contemporaries, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Hester Chapone, and Stéphanie de Genlis. In the process, it presents a clear picture of the eighteenth-century quarrel that debates the interassociation among gender, education, and intellectual attainment. This book intends to initiate an informed conversation with contemporary readers about Macaulay's work on education within its own historical context so that fair assessments of her work can be made. It also argues that any complete history of the philosophy of education must include Macaulay's work.
