Women, Power, and Property explores this question within the context of India, the world's largest democracy. Brulé employs a research design that maximizes causal inference alongside extensive field research to explain the relationship between political representation, backlash, and economic empowerment. Her findings show that women in government – gatekeepers – catalyze access to fundamental economic rights to property. Women in politics have the power to support constituent rights at critical junctures, such as marriage negotiations, when they can strike integrative solutions to intrahousehold bargaining. Yet there is a paradox: quotas are essential for enforcement of rights, but they generate backlash against women who gain rights without bargaining leverage. In this groundbreaking study, Brulé shows how well-designed quotas can operate as a crucial tool to foster equality and benefit the women they are meant to empower.

The constitution of Bangladesh has confirmed equal rights for all citizens without discriminating religion and gender, but the prevailing legislation for land and inheritance law has failed to ensure equality and justice. The ethnical groups in Bangladesh are Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, and other minorities; all of them are individually religion biased inheritance law, which have deprived and discriminated women. Such religion based inheritance laws are not only conflicting with the constitutional principles, but also violated the constitutional supremacy. This study identified that the introducers of the religions are the representative of patriarchy and they kept their gender interest on land by depriving and discriminating the females. The common consent of all the religions are the discrimination between male and female for land rights is a universal norms made by the God, they would like to validate their favouritism and inequity by keeping provision of getting equal heavenly glory in the eternity for females who obey religion orders. The women’s advancement in education and knowledge has given them sense, that life out of life does not carry any meaning, they demand equal rights in the earth- not to the heaven. This study also acknowledged that no religion based inheritance law could ensure women’s equal property rights; thus, it is essential to introduce uniform property law for all citizens of Bangladesh based on gender equality that the original constitutional principal ensured regardless to the class, colour, race, and ethnic group.

Originally inhabited exclusively by indigenous peoples, the Hill Tracts has been impacted by national projects and programs with dire consequences. This book describes the struggle of the indigenous peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts region to regain control over their ancestral land and resource rights. From sovereign nations to the limited autonomy of today, the report details the legal basis of the land rights of the indigenous peoples and the different tools employed by successive administrations to exploit their resources and divest them of their ancestral lands and territories. The book argues that development programs need to be implemented in a culturally appropriate manner to be truly sustainable, and with the consent and participation of the peoples concerned. Otherwise, they only serve to push an already vulnerable people into greater impoverishment and hardship. The data is collected from Matlab, Bangladesh, a small-scale agricultural society that has only recently become engaged in industrialization. Land inheritance has traditionally played a key role in a person’s social status and economic security, but changes in the amount of land and in demographics have altered the importance of land and who does the inheriting. Based on a survey of 944 women in rural Bangladesh, this study provides strong support for the predictions that women in Bangladesh are less likely to inherit land and (if they do inherit) to inherit less land than men, that a woman’s likelihood of having inherited land increases when her mother has inherited land, that whether a man or a woman works in agriculture increases their chances of having inherited land, that men’s chances of having inherited land are increased when their parents own land, that women are significantly more likely to inherit land post-mortem than are men, that the amount of land a woman inherits increases as the amount of land her mother inherited increases, and that the amount of land a man inherits increases as his education increases.

Book excerpt: The existing literature shows that climate change will likely affect several of the dimensions that determine people’s food security status in Bangladesh, from crop production to the availability of food products and their accessibility. Crop diversification represents a farm-level response that reduces exposure to climate-related risks and it has also been shown to increase diet diversity and contribute to the reduction in micronutrient deficiencies. In fact, the Government of Bangladesh has several policies in place that encourage and support agricultural diversification. However, despite this support the level of crop diversification in the country remains low. Women empowerment has been linked to diversified diets and positively associated with better child nutrition outcomes. Furthermore, although traditionally their role in agriculture tends to be undervalued, women involvement has already been shown to affect agricultural production choices and enhance technical efficiency. This paper connects three different areas of inquiry - climate change, gender and nutrition – by exploring whether women’s empowerment in agricultural production leads to increased diversification in the use of farmland. Specifically, we use a series of econometric techniques to evaluate whether there is sufficient evidence to claim that a higher levels of empowerment lead to greater diversity in the allocation of farmland to agricultural crops. Our results reveal that indeed some aspects of women empowerment, but not all, lead to a more diversified use of farmland and to a transition for cereal production to other uses like vegetables and fruits. These findings provide some possible pathways for gender-sensitive interventions that promote crop diversity as a risk management tool and as a way to improve the availability of nutritious crops.
