Book Synopsis Permanent Supportive Housing for Women and Families in Dallas, Texas by : India Stewart
Download or read book Permanent Supportive Housing for Women and Families in Dallas, Texas written by India Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study examines the lived experience of homelessness from the perspective of women in permanent supportive housing programs. Fifteen formerly homeless women residing in permanent supportive housing, along with eleven service providers, were interviewed to determine patterns of service utilization and unique aspects of women's experience of homelessness. Findings suggest that women's experience of homelessness is characterized by increased vulnerability compared with their male peers and often impacted by the presence of children. This vulnerability appears to influence women's decisions to access shelter and services, with women reporting far less "on the street" homelessness and more willingness to enter and remain in shelter programs than their male counterparts. Women with children present have greater access to mainstream benefits and use these resources, along with limited support from family, to maintain stability while in permanent supportive housing. Participants did not observe significant differences in the services needed by male and female clients, but noted that gender, and investment in traditional gender roles, influences how these services are perceived by recipients. Men were believed to feel more stigmatized by the experience of requesting assistance and more reluctant to seek help than their female counterparts. Women demonstrated greater willingness to access services, but many faced barriers related to a diminished sense of self-efficacy, along with concerns related to securing transportation and childcare. The majority of women interviewed viewed permanent supportive housing as a temporary home that allowed them the time and space to pursue educational, employment, and parenting goals absent the financial pressures they experienced while independently housed. These women, particularly those younger than 35, were confident in their ability to achieve self-sufficiency within one to five years. Older residents expressed somewhat more modest goals related to managing disabilities and navigating pension systems. Women and families are a unique population in permanent supportive housing and face multiple barriers to self-sufficiency. Practitioners and policymakers must begin to recognize these differences in designing programming that addresses this population's specific needs in permanent supportive housing.

Download or read book Safe Haven written by Rae Bridgman and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, urban anthropologist Rae Bridgman, in careful and intimate detail, explores the perspectives of the women who work and live at Savard's, a unique shelter for homeless women. Bridgman uses the design and development of Savard's - a housing model developed by women for women - as an opportunity to document the project's original vision and what happened once it opened. There are few rules at Savard's. Women may come and go as they wish, and referrals to other services are made only when a woman has indicated interest in taking action on her own behalf. It is a model that aims to provide a safe haven for the chronically homeless. The study traces the evolution of this type of shelter, providing qualitative research and useful analysis for academics, policy-makers, service providers, and activists. Based on many hours of participant observation as well as interviews and staff records, Safe Haven presents a distinct picture of the chronically homeless and those on the frontlines of this lifesaving service.
Book Synopsis Social Construction of Gender Inequality in the Housing System by : Paul Pennartz
Download or read book Social Construction of Gender Inequality in the Housing System written by Paul Pennartz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume recognises the issue of gender inequality in Hong Kong housing. The invisibility of the housing problem is compounded by the dominant patriarchal Chinese culture in Hong Kong. The issue remains marginal in Western countries as well, despite increasing concern. Kam Wah Chan makes meaningful, insightful progress on the housing issue in Hong Kong by focusing on the crucial issues of housing for lone mothers and for women in new towns.

The problem has elicited a variety of societal and public policy responses over the years, concomitant with fluctuations in the economy and changes in the demographics of and attitudes toward poor and disenfranchised citizens. In recent decades, federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the philanthropic community have worked hard to develop and implement programs to solve the challenges of homelessness, and progress has been made. However, much more remains to be done. Importantly, the results of various efforts, and especially the efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans in recent years, have shown that the problem of homelessness can be successfully addressed. Although a number of programs have been developed to meet the needs of persons experiencing homelessness, this report focuses on one particular type of intervention: permanent supportive housing (PSH). Permanent Supportive Housing focuses on the impact of PSH on health care outcomes and its cost-effectiveness. The report also addresses policy and program barriers that affect the ability to bring the PSH and other housing models to scale to address housing and health care needs.

Download or read book Modern Housing written by Catherine Bauer and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original guide on modern housing from the premier expert and activist in the public housing movement Originally published in 1934, Modern Housing is widely acknowledged as one of the most important books on housing of the twentieth century, introducing the latest developments in European modernist housing to an American audience. It is also a manifesto: America needs to draw on Europe’s example to solve its housing crisis. Only when housing is transformed into a planned, public amenity will it truly be modern. Modern Housing’s sharp message catalyzed an intense period of housing activism in the United States, resulting in the Housing Act of 1937, which Catherine Bauer coauthored. But these reforms never went far enough: so long as housing remained the subject of capitalist speculation, Bauer knew the housing problem would remain. In light of today’s affordable housing emergency, her prescriptions for how to achieve humane and dignified modern housing remain as instructive and urgent as ever.
