Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third World debt crisis, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's adjustment policies have compelled many countries to move towards a contraction of public sector expenditure in favour of market orientated development policies. Women in general and the poorest amongst them in particular have borne a disproportionate burden of the ensuing hardships. This book addresses the shortcomings in the current gender blind analytical frameworks of governments and financial organisations and offers alternative strategies for combating recession and poverty.

Book excerpt: Most attempts to study the informal sector have tended to emphasize uniformity of experiences. Where an effort has been made to develop a more nuanced understanding, the assumption has always been that people move from lower to higher level activities that coincide with increased opportunities for accumulation. This report challenges both notions. Drawing on the experiences of women informal sector traders in Harare, Zimbabwe, and using a longitudinal study approach, the authors document differentiation within the sector amidst generalized decline in working and living conditions. Far from being a site of accumulation, the authors show that the informal sector during the era of adjustment is a site of bare survival in which people work ever longer hours for ever-diminishing incomes on which many competing claims are made within and outside the household.

Book excerpt: The debt crisis and global economic changes of the 1980s caused Third World nations to restructure economic policies, community resources, the labor market, and intra-household divisions of labor. These changes swelled the ranks of the unemployed, the poor, and the malnourished. Women, in particular, were affected negatively by processes of structural adjustment because they represent a disproportionate share of the world's poor, are increasingly represented among low-wage workers, and are forced to balance wage work with subsistence and domestic production in meeting household needs. Using country-based studies, this text offers new perspectives on the consequences of economic crisis in terms of changing state practices and household and family organization, patterns of resource allocation, and women's work.

Book excerpt: Globalization creates growth without jobs in the North, structural adjustment in the South, privatization in the East and the dismantling of states everywhere. The author of this extraordinary book uses a mixture of case studies, examples and quotations to illustrate some hard facts. She looks at women across the world to show how their lives have been turned upside down, by industrialization in the South and a return to homeworking in the North. From New York to Phnom Penh, from Moscow to Dakar, we see the devastating effects of the unfettered power of transnational corporations on women's lives.

Book excerpt: The nine case studies in this volume were commissioned to assess the impact that stabilisation and structural adjustment policies have had on women in each of their four main roles: producers, home managers, mothers and community organisers. The studies provide data on the policies adopted, examine their impact on women, make recommendations, and suggest priority actions to improve the situation of the women concerned. They were compiled mainly by local researchers in Bangladesh, Jamaica, Malaysia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the development process is marked by male bias - ill-founded and unjustified asymmetries that operate in favour of men and against women. The contributors include some of the leading writers in the gender and development field - Diane Elson, Delia Davin, Susie Jacobs, Carolyne Dennis, Alison MacEwan Scott and Ruth Pearson. Together they analyze the variety of forms taken by male bias: its foundations and the way it changes over time; and the possibilities of overcoming it. The cases considered cover both urban and rural settings; agriculture, industry and services; self-employment and wage-employment; and Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Book excerpt: Based on surveys, laboratory research, formal empirical investigations into women's development, as well as newspaper reports, women's fiction and autobiographical material, Lott examines the lifelong process of gender learning. She describes how girls and women acquire female traits, and how situational and cultural demands affect the gender process. She explains how the process of socialization--from being born a female to becoming a culturally defined woman--affects a woman throughout her life, from prenatal development through old age, shaping her behavior, beliefs, and attitudes, and her relationships with children, men, and other women. Lott also examines women's current multiple roles as well as the wider range of possibilities the women today share with men. ISBN 0-534-07440-5 (pbk.): $16.00.
