Book excerpt: This is a collection of lectures delivered by Tucker in the William Storrs Lecture Series, Yale University Law School, 1916, and originally titled "Local Self-Government." One lecture addresses the ways in which the proposal to enfranchise women by Constitutional amendment violates the "genius" of the Constitution. Good opposing arguments can be found in "Woman suffrage by federal Constitutional amendment" [Library, Carrie Chapman Catt, sec. VII, no. 60].

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment The following pages contain substantially the five lectures delivered by the author in the Storrs Lecture Course in the Law School of Yale University, in February, 1916. The title given to this book, "Woman's Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment," is not the same under which the lectures were originally given. Their title was "Local Self-Government." The reader will see that the real discussion in these pages is devoted to the proper and rightful demarcation of the powers of the Federal and State Governments under the Constitution of the United States, and the necessity for maintaining those powers in a just equilibrium for the preservation of the Liberty of American citizens. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on the various arguments for and against woman suffrage by federal constitutional amendment rather than by individual states. An essay by Henry Wade Rogers provides an interesting counterpoint to another volume in this collection, "Woman's Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment," by Henry St. George Tucker [Section VII, no. 380].

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women's Suffrage: The Reform Against Nature In this manner it results that the lot of woman comes to be a lot of abridgment and suppression, much more commonly than we have been oh serving ourselves. As our attention is called to the matter, and we become more completely awake to it, we are surprised to find how many disadvantages are laid upon the condition of woman that no principle of equity permits, and no pretense of reason or necessity justifies. It does not surprise us that, in the savage and bar barons forms of society, she is reduced to the lot of a menial or drudge and well nigh to a beast of burden; or that she is bought and sold for mar riage, apart from any right of consent, and con signed in this manner to a husband whose power is a power of life and death. All such monstrous kinds of wrong we expect to encounter in the bar baric conditions of society. But the real wonder now forcing itself upon' our discovery, is that our own deliberately adjusted laws and institutions are so often unequal, as regards the property rights of men and women and the redress of their per sonal wrongs that women are so often excluded. Book excerpt: This is the "everything" women's suffrage and Nineteenth Amendment book, coming just as the country celebrates the centenary of the constitutional amendment that finally brought the vote to all American women. Women's Suffrage: The Complete Guide to the Nineteenth Amendment tells the dramatic story of American women's long fight for the vote and passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. A veritable library on all things to do with suffrage and the Nineteenth Amendment, this reference tells the heroic stories of suffragists and brings to life the ideas and deeds of the organizations that made suffrage possible. Along the way, the book delves into less well-known stories, like the experiences of African American women during the fight for suffrage, the role of labor in the suffrage movement, and the special role of Western states in the fight for voting equality. The material analyzes key moments in the suffrage fight. A comprehensive document section brings to life the arguments for and against suffrage. Included among many primary sources are Jane Addams's provocative "If Men Were Seeking the Franchise" (1913), Carrie Chapman Catt's "Address to Congress on Women's Suffrage" (1917), and many more speeches, laws, and documents of all types.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman Suffrage: A Reply Smith demurs, and contends that the lot of the woman has not been determined by the will of the man, at least in any considerable degree. According to him it had its origin in those circumstances which made it expedient, on public grounds, that in the early stages of civilization the family should be socially, legally, and politically a unit. Into this portion of the controversy, however, I cannot see that there would be any advantage in entering. Whether Mr. Mill was right or wrong in his view of the historical question, he was at all events eminently successful in the purpose for which he introduced the discussion. He has secured a hearing for the cause of woman, so effectually, that we may now at least feel confident that it will not be ultimately decided on other grounds than those of reason and justice. Nor does it in truth matter whether in approaching the question of Woman Suffrage we adopt Mr. Mill's or Mr. Smith's theory. Both alike regard the existing disabilities of women as survivals - Mr. Mill, as survivals from a very early period in which physical force was supreme; Mr. Smith as survivals from the state of things which produced the peculiar constitution of the patriarchal family but both as survivals, and therefore as belonging to a condition of life which has passed away. The point is thus of purely archaeological interest, while the real question now before the public is, not as to the origin of woman's disabilities, but as to their present expediency; the interest of the whole community, to borrow once more Mr. Smith's language, being the test.
