Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Progress in Japan From all Japanese, of every shade of religious belief or of none, we hear the unanimous verdict Christianity brought a new message to woman. Fifty years ago the gospel of joy began to move the hearts of Japan's daughters. Some of these, now white-haired, are still teachers, and have been makers of Christian homes or are active in Christian churches. The first recognition of female education by the Government of Japan was when a young woman, who had been under the instruction of Mrs. J. C. Hepburn of the Presbyterian Mission, was appointed assistant to Miss Margaret Clark Griffis, in the first school opened under government auspices in the castle in Tokyo. To this school with its sixty pupils, daughters of the nobility and gentry, the Empress paid repeated visits. In the book, Who's Who in Japan, for 1912, we find an astonishing record of graduates of this first school. Many are wives or widows of eminent men, leaders of the nation, while other private data reveal a remarkable line of teachers and' influential women, not a few of whom are Christians. The startlingly rapid changes which have occurred within the last few years have brought thoughtful people everywhere to a realization of the fact that the great awakened nations of the Orient will play a by no means unimportant part in determining the trend of events in the twentieth century, and even in the years which lie beyond it. Few things are of such vital interest in our time as the forces which are moulding the life of these nations and determining the char acter of the influence which they will exert. Yet Miss Bacon's study is largely confined to the higher and upper middle Classes, who, though impor tant, constitute but one section Of the women Of Japan. TO understand Japan it is also needful to know the lives and characteristics Of the working classes. Especially impor tant in the eyes Of those who study social development is the transformation that is taking place in the Japanese home because Of the influx Of Occidental industrialism. The first three chapters deal with historical facts and the rest with the present condition of things. Rich as this country is in ancient records, those which pertain to women are very scarce, and it is no light work to make up their history. This is no doubt due, on one hand, to the secret nature Of womanly interference, and on the other, to the delicate modesty Of our women. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lucid, hard-hitting book explores a central paradox of the Japanese economy: the relegation of women to low-paying, dead-end jobs in a workforce that depends on their labor to maintain its status as a world economic leader. Drawing upon historical materials, survey and statistical data, and extensive interviews in Japan, Mary Brinton provides an in-depth and original examination of the role of gender in Japan's phenomenal postwar economic growth. Brinton finds that the educational system, the workplace, and the family in Japan have shaped the opportunities open to female workers. Women move in and out of the workforce depending on their age and family duties, a great disadvantage in a system that emphasizes seniority and continuous work experience. Brinton situates the vicious cycle that perpetuates traditional gender roles within the concept of human capital development, whereby Japanese society "underinvests" in the capabilities of women. The effects of this underinvestment are reinforced indirectly as women sustain male human capital through unpaid domestic labor and psychological support. Brinton provides a clear analysis of a society that remains misunderstood, but whose economic transformation has been watched with great interest by the industrialized world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Etta Jones was not a World War II soldier or a war time spy. She was a school teacher whose life changed forever on that Sunday morning in June 1942 when the Japanese military invaded Attu Island and Etta became a prisoner of war. Etta and her sister moved to the Territory of Alaska in 1922. She planned to stay only one year as a vacation, but this 40 something year old nurse from back east met Foster Jones and fell in love. They married and for nearly twenty years they lived, worked and taught in remote Athabascan, Alutiiq, Yup’ik and Aleut villages where they were the only outsiders. Their last assignment was Attu. After the invasion, Etta became a prisoner of war and spent 39 months in Japanese POW sites located in Yokohama and Totsuka. She was the first female Caucasian taken prisoner by a foreign enemy on the North American Continent since the War of 1812, and she was the first American female released by the Japanese at the end of World War II. Using descriptive letters that she penned herself, her unpublished manuscript, historical documents and personal interviews with key people who were involved with events as they happened, her extraordinary story is told for the first time in this book.
